Horrifying Hungries/Taigha horde... help me polish this for the sake of evil?

Back at the dawn of N3 I played against a massive Hungries horde run as a joke... but it was still a truly horrifying experience in inevitable attrition at the outer edge of Infinity's order economy mechanic. It was a grueling but interesting attrition match.

After a recent discussion in the Ariadna forum, I'd like to try building an updated version of that awful waves-of-bodies experience, to play out with plenty of suitable proxies in the near future (cough Tyranids cough). It seems like an interesting challenge to throw at various forces to see how they would do against it.

I'm not a CA player myself (my ISS was ground down by that wave-attack game, despite having 2 TR HMG bots, a Hsien with MSV2, and plenty of Kuang Shi). I'll just be playing this one for fun and a cinematic if loooooong themed game.

So I'd like your thoughts about how to best build and play a force like that. My assumptions are:

    - Impetuous Smoke and some sort of White Noise seem important. Daturazi smoke throwers were what I faced before iirc (only two but that was plenty, adding more here just to be cautious.

    - But there's no Impetuous Eclipse or even White Noise unit in CA, is there? Every Impetuous unit Dodges at at least PH 14, but I'd like to avoid giving AROs as much as possible when facing the ubiquitous MSV2 snipers.

    - For order of operations I'm thinking get smoke down first thing during the Impetuous orders, then finish the other 20-plus Impetuous orders.
    - Then Coordinated Order the 4 Taigha critters in forwards to take out ARO/board control units, everything else uses orders to close as possible.
    - If opposing ARO/board control units still have good lines of fire after my smoke guys try their thing, Hungries could use their Climbing Plus to find unanticipated angles of attack, eliminate that ARO trooper as a priority. That would have to be the groups with more Regular orders in them.

    - Throw Gakis at mines, maybe not even dodge them.

    - Occupy the midfield with whoever didn't get additional Regular orders spent on them

    - If there are objectives, just squat tons of bodies around them (maybe not exploding Gakis though).

Here's my starting list, revised a bit since the first draft.

For me, as a dedicated CA player and advocate of cheap units, there are too many drawbacks to make this a serious list.

One of the main problems is lack of real-estate. Just about everything in that list has to go into your deployment zone strip, and there will only be so much area that has total cover. Any gaki that is nearby another model means that your opponent does additional damage because of the explode. Imagine your opponent wins the LT roll, not knowing what you are playing, and decides to go first. After your horde appears, the opponent realizes that they can win just by moving up, facing no ranged AROS, and just shooting at the Gakis specifically. White noise isn't going to help you because you can't ARO that onto the field. The Daturazi are only going to make it easier for them if the attacking piece has MSV2.

Then of course there's the other problem, which is that most defensive link teams will have a heavy weapon, and the shooting that ensues will mean very little, if anything, will make it to the enemy DZ. Even if you drop some white noise and smoke, you're not going to cover enough ground.

I'll think about this more today and post my version of the list, which would compress it down to two, or at maximum, three, combat groups.

I was thinking about this a touch overnight, actually. The daturazi are an improvement over the version with the oznat you posted over in that CHA thread, but I think Vaul has the right of the weaknesses you've got baked in there.

Are you committed to four combat groups? Condensing it down to three (say, two full and one half-full) would go a long way to making the list stronger and giving you the force concentration you need to make it a real threat.

I want a couple of HMG options here to at least give me a chance to destroy or neutralize long range AROs during the period of the game where my creatures have used impetuous moves to walk into smoke grenade clouds but can't advance beyond them. If the clouds are going to be there already, may as well use a maakrep for this. The Q drone is a bit better against enemies that already have MSV2, and the LT option can give it assisted fire while fulfilling the requirement that I actually have an LT as it does so.

I also need at least a couple of guns to slow down a push into my territory if not taking first turn. It's going to be a really tall order to defend with a list like this, and it might call for the gakis to all sit together and just die, cutting our losses until next turn.

It's important to have groups with some regular orders vs irregular because there are definitely going to be situations where restraining an impetuous move will be disaster-averting. An order group with just 10 gakis just isn't going to cut it. The opponent can even just let the first one or two move out so that they are in position to catch a detonation when the other ones move out and end near it (explosion takes effect at the end of the movement).

Overall, if this list was viable I would be playing it. Sadly, it just doesn't offer anything over and above a normal list that takes a moderate amount of warbands. Having said that, daturazi, pretas, gakis, and taighas are all extremely good. Infinity just inherently makes it undesirable to stock up on lots of one type of good thing.

Thanks for the honing, @RobertShepherd and @Vaulsc !

Three great groups does seem better, and still pushes the order curve in an interesting way. I'll give a three-group version a try, working from what you posted Vaulsc.

Vaulsc, good point about the Gakis. That happened when we played a similar horde a long time ago. I was thinking those would mostly be dedicated to lurking in tight parts of the midfield after Turn 1 and being hard to remove without them blowing up on you. Point of order though, you -can- actually ARO with White Noise, it has the ARO label. You just have to have LoF or ZoC to trigger the reaction, which is trickier. With Pitchers and Kiss or another repeater though, not impossible.

As for reactive linkteams: I've faced and watched warband players who deal with that just fine. Having several smoke chuckers to go at the beginning of the Impetuous phase shuts down most firelanes pretty quickly.

MSV2 snipers are harder though. Dunno how I'd deal with that in the Impetuous. Also not sure that the HMG options here will deal with them either. Only ARO-baiting or multiple Coordinated long-range shots do that well. I was thinking just having so many bodies that the odds favor you getting something through to kill that sniper would work. I'll consider other options, thanks.

That does kind of come to the point of why I was going with bodies instead of bigger guns. If you can't get firepower superiority, maybe just gambling on lots of Dodge rolls and then a flank approach (Climbing Plus makes that harder to predict).

Might be a good middle ground there... maybe yes to the Maakrep and I'll leave the Q-drone out in favor of more bodies.

It's a funny thing: Infinity really does reward having multiple tools and not spamming, until you get into the really crazy numbers with that spam. Then it stretches back in the favor of the spammer, maybe because the asymmetry of active vs. reactive power is exaggerated. It's the classic Keisotsu-horde-vs-Avatar thing really. Maybe that will change if crits get weakened. But if my experience with the first time I played this list still applies now that things have changed through the evolution of N3, at 30+ opposing troops most normal forces get ground down, even if they had a visor and some TR board control presence.

This would be my riff on the idea; you'll notice it's fundamentally very similar to Vaul's, the main difference being I wanted to fit Sheshkiin and literally any model that might be halfway counted as a midfield specialist. I strictly wouldn't use this into factions known for having MSV2 snipers unless the table was highly favourable, but if you absolutely wanted it to have some white noise, you can trim the Seed Soldier, one Gaki and one Preta for Victor Messer (who's also a pretty ok button pusher thanks in part to the cute synergy between the Nanoscreen and Cybermask).

In practice I've run actual lists like that but cut down to two combat groups, mostly cutting all the hungries to fit something like a Noctifier, e.g. something like this is very strong, but obviously doesn't fit your triple combat group brief:

That three-group list looks interesting, @RobertShepherd . It seems like a pretty viable ITS-oriented version of what I posted, decent specialist coverage for this kind of meme list. If I decide to actually play CA I'd love to try that. The two-group list also looks fun, but isn't what I'm trying to play here.

I'm not really designing a viable ITS list here, but a really extreme build that's hard to stop from closing in.

Mostly I want a match with this that feels like a survival horror game or a sequence from Starship Troopers. I definitely don't mind losing with it, I just want it to be an interesting challenge. I want to field something that's practically a specialized mission in itself to face in Annihilation.

I wasn't even trying the board-control game. In the opponent's active turn, I don't really want them to have anything better to do than kill a few of the closest Hungries.

But now that I see what you and @Vaulsc are doing with the Q-Drones and Fractaa as active-turn sweepers,so I'll try at least a single sweeper like that. Probably the Fractaa because he won't require a hacking device as support and can leverage smoke trick. That and upgun the Mentor to the SMR version to have another decent sweeper if needed. Thanks!

Also going to consolidate into three groups instead, that should still feel pretty extreme for an opponent with a normal army to face.

Considering it's what you actually put in your list in the next post, I'm pretty sure you meant "Maakrep"

Nomads do this better with Morlockes as they are 6 pts for a warband with smoke and a chain rifle.

In the first post the OP makes it clear that he's looking to use various combined army gribblies for thematic reasons and that this is not a competition list.

@RobertShepherd I understand, but I have witnessed the Nomad variant of this type of list take a 40+ person tournoment.

@Fearbox , well acquainted with that style thanks. THere are some great tokens out there made by @Miralad to track the Metachemistry results of a crapton of Morlocks btw, quite useful to remember who has what enhancements.

What tournament was it that such a list won at? I'd be super interested to read the batreps from it, if there are some out there.

Nomads also have Uberfalls, who put Impetuous Eclipse smoke in there, which is missing from this list sadly.

An extra combat group with just harassment troops also fits really well in a standard Nomad list.

But yeah as @RobertShepherd points out this list is a theme thing, just to see how much a bunch of Impetuous orders with super-fast movement can push attrition. Morlocks are great but 6-6 movement with Climbing Plus fits the job description a bit better (plus the Hungries have that cool Aliens gribbly thing going on).

I once had a gaki link use climbing plus to crawl up the underside of an overpass to stay out of enemy LOF until they all swarmed up and over the sides of the bridge and into melee with the enemy.

it may have been one of the most cinematic moments I've had naturally occur in a game.

Sweeeeeeet. That's exactly what I'm looking for. Should be both amusing and a bit terrifying for the opponent.

Inspired by this, I'm going to bring a whole bunch of blu-tac/patafix with me when I bring this list out, and stick it straight on to our office terrain set. Thanks for the idea!
