Let's take the following scenario: On the active turn, Ayyar and its holo-echoes use their first skill to move into LOS of Fusilier Angus. Fusilier Angus can foolishly decides to ARO shoot instead of delaying. Angus when he declares ARO shoot, he has to declare a model/marker to target.. So if the Ayyar decides BS shoot for the second skill and the holo-echoes disappear. Two things can happen, right?: If Fusilier Angus chose the wrong holo-echo, his shot automatically fails. The Ayyar gets Normal rolls for its shots. If Fusilier Angus chose the right holo-echo, it becomes a Face-to-Face Roll. Angus suffers the surprise shot penalty If the Fusilier Angus decided to Delay and the Ayyar decides to BS shoot for second part of the order, the holo-echos automatically disappear. Angus can target the real Ayyar and gets a Face-to-Face Roll with the surprise shot penalty. Is that correct? Can I get a normal roll if the opponent chooses not to delay until the declaration of the second skill?
This is correct, with the caveat that if the Fusilier chooses to delay and the Ayyar moves again then the Fusilier loses their ARO entirely. Sometimes it can be useful to BS Attack on the first skill if you have a template weapon that can hit all the Echos to prevent them getting the free movement, especially if you can clip a bystander!
If you have multiple AROs or template weapons it can be worthwhile to weed out the field a bit. It’s worth noting the timing; if the real model shoots, the false echoes don’t disappear until the resolution of the order, so they are still valid targets for impact templates.
