I really like the hodge-podge of alien aesthetics in this faction and I'd like to create a list that uses a little bit of every alien race in the faction. Is this viable? If so, what should I get from each!? Oh and where can I get those cool looking Taigha figures!? Are they only in that kickstarter?
Congrats on being right twice a day - choosing Vanilla CA was one of them! There are so many key units in VCA that I'd be hard pressed to list them all. If I was going to name my own favourite they would probably be: Caliban Shrouded Speculo Sphinx (wait for new model) Malignos Noctifier (new model incoming, but the old are pretty great) Samaritan (wait for the new named sculpt) Ikadrons R-drones Overdron Fraacta (probably the most contentious on the list, but I love the shotgun fraacta to bits) Ko Dali Grief operator (cheap knock-off Speculo) Med Tech Obsidon Bit + Kiss Daturazi Kendrat (no model available yet outside defiance) And then the three wonderful main reasons to play VCA: The Avatar Charontid Anathamatics Like I said, these are personal preferences, but having said that, the above units would mostley figure in a lot of VCA players' lists. One thing I'll say is that the above list of units is that it's a great pick for playing one of the big three (avatar, charon & annie). If you had everything on the list you'd have a really solid spread of units to make that kind of list work, as well as a host of others.
Nice! Thanks! I already have the Onyx starter and Dr. Worm so I'm on my way. I think I have Bit and Kiss too! I made enough to make an Onyx team, but I just really want a giant collection of different aliens all fighting together. Maybe my next purchase should be the Combined Army Action Pack?
Perfect and what should be my cheerleaders? Those boring ikadrons, or maybe the gakis or taigha? I really love the taigha but I don't see them for sale anywhere.
gakis and taighas can't be cheerleaders as they're irregulars, you can choose between Ikadrons, imetrons, R-drones and Unidrons to be in the back instead
Do NOT underestimate the power of a 6-2 move dual LFT to absolutely decimate links. These guys can be absolute monsters for 9 points.
Check out the Raicho. It got really significant buffs in N4 and has always been one of my favourite TAGs from a visual standpoint. I know I'll be getting one for my Vanilla CA next. As for the Taigha, they are restricted to the Defiance Kickstarter atm, but should get a general release eventually. Anyway, once Defiance drops, keep your eye on eBay because there are 3 duplicate Taighas in it which people are likely going to to sell off.
Ikadrons are amazing units. for 9pts you get baggage, which now can replenish disposable weapons in ZoC, they pack 2 light flamers, so can be used offensively and defensively, fast with 6-2 movement (really don't underestimate 6" on the first move, it's really huge), has silhouette 2, so can find a good hiding spot (keep in mind that they can go prone now), has a repeater (quite crucial now, as hacking shaping up to be really important). oh, and this guy can also can try to flash pulse you, if by chance you're out of his flamer reach.
2 Ikadrons, the best 18pts you'll ever spend! These charming little fellas have done sterling work for me over the years. They truly are an Aspects best friend.
Okay, okay, fine! I'll buy two! Stop bullying me! I just wish they were more interesting sculpts. What race of alien are they? I'll probably also get Kornak because I love named units and Daturazi and Onat because I like their sculpts. if I'm going to get the monkey boys I want them unarmored and looking savage!
This is my general template for vanilla CA lists Pick an EI aspect (skiavoros, charontid, anathematic or Avatar) Take 2 Datus/oznats/krakots for smoke, templates and to rescue your aspect from CC Take 1-2 shasvastii with camo and infiltration/forward deployment Take an ARO piece, usually Noctifer ML or a QDron, sometimes both Fill the rest of the list
They're biomechanical menial servant constructs designed to resemble a common animal companion of the Ur Rationalists (the "founders" of the combined army.) Basically they're robot space doggos, and they very good boys!
They are vat grown, but are based on the Ruaria, which are companion/pet animals of the Ur. "The Ruaria are fierce, brave, and loyal unto death, making them ideal as a model and reference to create an excellent slave/autonomous operative." Ur are ancient race that developed the Evolved Intelligence (Leader of the Combined Army). EDIT: Speculo'ed!
