My LGL dropped the price on some of the old KUM riders to 10$ and figured I'd actually pick them up for the sake of it. When cutting off the flashing I found they would actually looks better with 2 wheels each, which reminded me, I had this stuff in drawer someplace. Given this was my first attempt I'm fairly impressed. I wouldn't try and duplicate a full models, but if you need just want to copy a weapon or a bit its not bad. Lessons Learned Let it warm up completely. I put small bowl in my kitchen sink with hot water running into it for 2-3 min until I saw it sticking together and getting malleable. I should have left it in for a bit longer. It cooled a bit when making the mold, and I think would be easier to press out any air bubbles if it was hotter. Use wax paper between layers. I read it could be difficult to cut the mold for a clean edge. I took a piece of wax paper and cut a whole in it just big enough for the wheel to fit into it. Then sandwich it between the Instant Mold. I was able to just peel the 2 sides apart without having to cut it with an exacto, the edges closest tot he model may have torn since the whole on the wax paper was not perfectly around the wheel. But It should be cleaner than what I woudl have done manually. Give yourself a reference to put them back together. Next time I try this I'm not going to have the wax paper divide it completely into 2 pieces. I'll let the mold form into a book shape. This way it's easy to line up. Only 1 of my 3 wheels have the 2 sides properly line up. An Alternative would be to put in 2 ball bearing (or anything) on either side of the piece. This way when using the mold the 2 BBs could be left in so they line up properly. These have some fairly big mold lines, but considering its for the bottom of the old KUM sculpts I'm not complaining. If I redo them I could probably get it a lot cleaner. I'm going to try this again when the new Haqq Remotes come out. I want 2 proper Mini-Maggies both with an HMG & Rocket.
Absolutely agree that this kind of thing is just right for small things like guns and the like, have pending to do some cloning for a couple of conversions i have pending since forever
I use boiling water and it takes a couple of minutes to soften and go clear and really malleable. As for separating the layers: I use a light dusting of talc (I also use it for "filler" in resin casting, and for dusting the moulds to prevent surface bubbling).
