Minuteman links seemed to be rarely fielded before the update, expensive and competing against the more Durable Marauder or budget Grunt Fireteam left them out in the cold. They had superior firepower but is was rarely considered worth the increased cost compared to the other options. The update means that Minutemen no longer completely languish in obscurity, which is something I suppose.
I believe that as more and more wildcards and mixed teams are introduced, the idea of link teams consisting all of the same unit will vanish entirely. At least for in-between units which require some investment but without resilience. Most fireteams need a pointman and maybe a specialist or another weapon. Everything else is considered bloat most of the time. Imagine the humble Moiras: cost as much as 2W Grrls, bring strong tools which you would pay on every member while only using one or two. And the whole party is endangered to be wiped by a lucky DTW. Same applied for Minutemen, I think this is the reason they got no play. Yeah, with the update Minutemen went from a “I will never use this” to a “I may use this someday.” As soon as the update dropped I tried Minutemen in my grunt links with good results. But with 2020 I’ve moved on to MRRF so can’t comment more really.
I actually wish they'd dial back the mixing a bit and instead focusing on adjusting the units to make them more interesting to use on their own or a dedicated link. Right now there is no reason to take a Minuteman in vanilla, nor does it perform any interesting duties or fill any niche. If they made them a bit more interesting (automedikit was my suggestion) then you'd probably see them more. Sadly for now at least they're just Grunts +1.
I haven’t been taking them now that I can take a grunt link with all the wildcards and still get my minuteman of choice. It looks great but pretty costly for an Ariadna fireteam at almost half the points of a full army. Where do you go from there? 2-3 Foxtrots? Some Desperadoes to throw in some cheap bodies?
Depends on the rest of the mission requirements. 3.5 swc and 156 pts can still get you a lot of things. Usually I’ll fill it out with some rangers and flamethrower grunts and then maybe a blackjack or a devil dog.
