After playing for awhile, I've come to notice that a lot of strategy that isn't apparent on the surface is related to how specific characters interact with dice. While it may be second nature to play :-: on defense and :,: on offense, this isn't actually often the right answer. Every situation is different, but in here I want to sort of write a general analysis on characters and what they can do with the different colors of dice given to them.

Lovers are the characters that can do way more than your average character with this color of die. This spot is reserved for interactions with high synergy for that character.

Friends are the characters that simply get good value out of that die.

Of course, having more dice is always better.

    :+: The Red Die

The powerhouse on offense, this die currently cannot be given to any character and instead can only be found on certain strong attacks. Only second to yellow in number of :3:s, this fact is often overlooked because of its obvious use as :2:.

    Lovers:

    Gata -
Only actually found on her disengage roll, this helps her to disengage with relative ease and to trigger her displacement switch.

Lunah - Lunah loves getting damage, and the :3:only serve to negate more shields from the opponent.

Bill - Very similar to Lunah, but his :3: is for getting more Twin Pistol attacks.

Mushashi - Same deal, but in addition, more damage is more displacement.

Massacre - The extra :3:s are great for taunting or nullifying :1:, and he loves the damage. Massacre can also get :+: on a 2 AP attack, which is awesome for him.

    Friends:

    Maximus -
A :8: is often the only way his attack gets damage in, but he also likes the :3: which he desperately needs for his switches.

    :,: The Orange Die

The secondary offensive die, this one is more balanced, and more importantly, can be given to any character with tactics or through Hannibal. It's a nice value combat die that is focused on :2:, but can add some :3: or :1: too.

    Lovers:

    Hexx3r -
Give Hexx3r an orange die on her Gotcha! to get a much higher chance of success and the occasional extra switch. This Action is normally fairly unreliable. It can be used on very important Vade Retros as well.

8-Ball - This is a very solid balance and it's no wonder 8-Ball has it on both of his actions. 8-Ball uses all 3 symbols well, so he's a very good candidate for this die. The mediocre success rate of Be Water, Dude can easily be ramped up by a single extra :,:, and it can also make his attack actually threaten to do damage.

Lunah - This die not only helps Lunah with her attack, but can also make Suppressive Fire more reliable, perhaps even triggering a switch for damage.

    Friends:

Bill, Mushashi, Parvati, Valkyrie, Massacre -
All of these characters appreciate the extra damage and can use the alternate symbols in some useful way.

Laxmee - On a key D/Buff3r, an :,: can be very helpful in ensuring success. Helping her disengage with this is also pretty handy.

    :.: The Yellow Die

The best die for :3:s by a wide margin, all the characters with powerful switches look out for this die to make them trigger MUCH more consistently. The difference between having a :.: and not having one is one of the biggest discrepancies for certain characters being effective.

    Lovers:

    Maximus -
With no way to consistently get :3:s of his own, a :.: makes his switches way more likely and a lot more threatening.

8-Ball - The same deal as Maximus, but 8-Ball's switches are even more devastating, so having this helps even more.

Bill - Needing :3::3::3: for Twin Pistols' switch, Bill needs all the help he can get in this department and loves an extra :.:.

Mushashi - Also very hungry for :3: to trigger his Ken no Sen switch, Mushashi appreciates this die a lot too.

Laxmee - Laxmee only works because she gets :.::.::.: on D/Buff3r to trigger those very hard switches to hit. However, she can get all 3 on her own and doesn't really need you to add any to her, but it can help when disengaging.

    Friends:

Gata - More on defense, but Gata's special switch turns :.: into one of the best defensive additions for her mediocre defense roll if you're in melee range. :.::.: together is quite effective on defense, even moreso than a :-:.

Lunah - Extra nullification on attack is nice, but less cost-efficient than just adding :2:s. However, for her Suppressive Fire action, :.:s convert into direct damage with :1::3:.

Massacre - He can use a lot of :3:s on his attack, but as with Lunah, direct :2:s are more cost efficient. However, adding a :.: to his Hey, Malpario action is actually better than adding an :,: when it comes to success rate.

    :-: The Blue Die

A balanced defensive die, this is your stock die when you need :1:s. However, don't underestimate the three :2:s that it contains. This die can be used for both defense and offense by the right characters.

    Lovers:

Hexx3r - She usually needs these to survive, and leftover shields can usually be combined with her leftover :3:s from all the :.: that she rolls to displace herself.

8-Ball - As with the :,:, 8-Ball just loves the amount of symbols that these dice give since he can use all of them quite well.

Mushashi - A lot of people overlook this, but even on attack, Mushashi prefers :1: to :2: as long as he's adjacent to the target. He cannot turn :2: into :1:, but he can do the other way around. He loves this die. It even helps him trigger extra attacks. The more :1: he can get, the better.

Valkyrie - Similar to Mushashi, though at a less effective rate of :1::1: to :2:. However, Valkyrie can do this at range as well. She also gets a lot of these dice on her own, so you don't always have to give them to her.

    Friends:

    Maximus -
Extra shields can go right into his taunting switch.

Laxmee - Adding one to her D/Buff3r action usually assures you a stun switch.

Bill - Throw one of these into a roll made by Bill, any roll at all, and you can often wind up with an extra tactic in your hand.

    :*: The Green Die

While :*: is the vanguard of defensive dice, this die is surprisingly weak, being the only die with two empty sides. The :+: is overall a stronger die, but you get all of your :*: dice for free without spending any action points, so that's the tradeoff. The :7: can be devastating when you roll it, so it's a prime target for reroll tactics.

    Lovers:

    Mushashi, Valkyrie -
You can use :7: as :1::1: in the switches phase. Glorious for damage if you have the luxury.

Bill - He needs defense, and even if you don't need it, it can be converted into extra cards.

    Friends:

    None, for now.

    :): The Black Die

The black sheep of Aristeia dice, this is clearly the least valuable die, as evidenced by its lack of symbols. You see it a lot on cover rolls, but it's sometimes added to character cards and tactics.

    Lovers:

    Lunah -
Most obviously she doesn't really have to roll these. She converts them to :,:, which is a pretty sweet deal for her.

Valkyrie - Unlike Mushashi who also has good :1: switches, Valkyrie has a range 2 attack that allows her to get cover and add one of these to her roll. :1: are versatile for her, so see if you can get cover when charging.

8-Ball - He also likes the extra :1:. Since his attacks aren't often made for doing damage, taking the extra :): from cover can get you an extra switch or save you from a counterattack :2:.

    Friends:

    Mushashi -
If you can get one of these in melee (perhaps with Tsuchi-Do), they are more versatile thanks to his switches.

Bill - Cover is nice to prevent counterattack damage, and leftover shields can go towards more cards.

Nice analysis. Very useful and I'll be interested to see it mature with the new characters.

On topic I like how sometimes Tactic card that add dice really shine with some other Aristos rather than the one that give you that tactic.

A really good example is Musashi, I see often Mizu-Do and Kaze-Do like the way to go card for him.
But if you have a Wild Bill or Lunah on the same team Tsuchi-Do can really become a Golden card while Musashi himself really like card like Block that add blue damage to his roll.

Indeed, remember to read the text of your tactics closely (especially the timing section) to see if you can use certain characters' Tactics on other characters.

    Nice piece.
Makes me wish for an Aristeia dice probability calculator... if only I had the skills to do it...
