hey, I could really use some help as my friends and I got into a nasty discussion. Mission 9, you have an attack that damages the last activated player. Take 3 black dices, each shield is 3 damage and defend it with your biotechnical defence. They believe this also hits cadin. I don't because of Atek.
Atek only protects against Hacking rolls, the wording states that the action is an Attack. Even though it's targeting BP, it won't trigger Atek, like how the 2nd part of Plasma damage doesn't.
I get what ATEK says, I get your and my friends vision. But I don't get how in say the lore damages are written, aka with your plasma does that still require line of sight. Which in mission 9 isn't the case, and that in the case of cadin he isn't allowed to use his normal defence. As plasma burns etc right? Or is it more like a spray of nanites? If you could help me wrap my head around that, that would be awsome
Yeah, I can see how it's not exactly clear what's going on. However Aida's a smuggler, if they wanted a Hacking attack they'd have Victor do it. It could be a nanospray, like you mentioned, or small biological/chemical charges rigged to blow. Unfortunately the text, as written, provides no hints in that regard.
I don't have my copy yet but this sounds similar to a Biotechvore area in Infinity which forces anything in it to take a BTS save or suffer a wound. BTS represents both hacking defense and resistance to biological, chemical, or nanotech attacks. Whilst Armour represents resistance to blades, bullets, and bludgeons. Most Ariadnans don't have implanted Comlogs, which is what makes Cadin immune to hacking attacks, but they also generally have zero BTS, leaving them very vulnerable to certain attacks.
I also get the confusion, but indeed some BTS attacks represent things like chemicals, viruses or nanobots, which is a different thing from having your comlog/heavy armour/hacking device attacked by malicious software. That said, I think BTS in defiance is not very intuitive and often breaks immersion a bit. Going up against the Charontid, Jazz was by far the most likely to get away unscathed with her defensive hacking device, while the others really had to fear for their lives. It's also weird on enemies; why would an unhackable target have BTS? But they all do have pretty good BTS, even the regular Nox or veteran Taighas. Rahmans upgrade that lets him target BTS is a net downgrade if you average all enemies. But that's just my 2 cents and a pretty minor gripe.
