The writers have said that the season doesn't end on a cliff-hanger - and also hinted that the venus situation resolves itself this season, too.

Brooklyn 99 was also cancelled and has just been picked up by another network so there's hope for the Expanse yet.

Worst case scenario A, If it has an ending, it has an ending. But evidently they had more to do.

I do hope it does go Netflix, it means we outside the United States actually get the damn thing all at once and not three months after it wraps up on SyFy.

Worst case scenario B, well, getting a new network causes more interest in the show within the Infinity community, and, well...

Well, Syfy is certainly the "cant" network.

As opposed to a network that "can".

Well... I don't know where will season 3 end related to the books, but there are 6 SEVEN books (and an eighth in the works) and the last ones are totally out of the Solar System, and if I remember right they take out a lot of the tension and pressure that was boiling,
since they got access to a "Stargate", so terraforming Mars is irrelevant, the Asteroids are also irrelevant, and Earth can send as many colonists as it can...
Sure there are problems, but it's a shift that breaks with the war tension that has been there on all the episodes, so I can understand the decision.

We can always hope for a movie, like Whedon did with Firefly/Serenity

Edit: corrected number of books. Not that I had checked since the first season of the TV series, sheesh XD

Sorry, it didn't looked like a real spoiler to me (since it's mostly the only way to solve that tension for the war without jumping a deus ex machina, frankly :S). I suppose it is a microspoiler compared to other things I could have said XD

7 novels, currently (and 6 short stories) with an 8th due out end of this year, and the ninth and final late next year. Contracted for a 9 book series.
They have a new series (not "the expanse", newer, space-opera-y) coming out AFTER that. It's not going to be a "shared universe" with other writers.

And Alcon is shopping the show around to other providers atm. SyFy's broadcast setup is stuck in last century still.
One of the streaming services will hopefully pick it up (the international re-broadcast rights will be worth it to them).

I remember when it used to be Sci-fi and actually embraced the fact that it had science fiction at its core... Though I also remember the change to Syfy were they had TNA wresting, which also started out good before falling apart changing its name and shambling on like an televisual zombi. A right bunch of cants.

I don't really blame Syfy on this one. The Expanse is by far the most expensive show they have to produce, they don't get any streaming revenue from it, and its ratings have been down. Compared to The Magicians and Krypton who are way cheaper and getting higher ratings.....it was a matter of how soon would they cancel the Expanse, not when.

    Yeah but krypton is pox.

Soap opera acting in a pantomime. It's as Syfy as Dr Who (which is a panto in SyFy clothing).

Done in by a bad distribution deal. Well, the books are much, much better, so y'all would be better off reading them. As a matter of fact, read them in the following order, for maximum enjoyment. This is not a chronological order, but I think reading certain of the novellas and short stories after certain books is far more interesting. More "aha!" moments.

    1. Leviathan Wakes
    2. Drive ( a short story)
    3. Caliban's War
    4. Gods of Risk (novella)
    5. Abaddon's Gate
    6. Cibola Burn
    7. Nemesis Games
    8. The Churn (novella)
    9. Babylon's Ashes
    10. The Butcher of Anderson Station (short story)
    11. The Vital Abyss (novella)
    12. Strange Dogs (novella)
    13.Persepolis Rising

I hear the next novel is called Tiamat's Wrath, and due in December 2018. There will be two more novellas and one more novel after that.

They don't produce it, they distribute it. SyFy didn't cancel it, they declined to continue airing it. And that does have to do with the distribution deal. They're one more cable network that (so very ironically) doesn't seem to understand the future and that cable simply isn't it.

So, The Expanse will likely get picked up elsewhere and will be just fine. Here's to hoping that this issue doesn't interrupt the filming of season 4.

Two of the short stories at least were covered in "blink and you'll miss them" snippets in season 1.
Drive - where there was a flashback of Solomon Epstein testing his experimental drive system.

Butcher of Anderson station was the flashback for Fred Johnson.

    Remember the Donnager!

As much as the cancellation sucks.... Well, hell the cancellation just really sucks!

Looks like good "hard" sci-fi simply doesnt have the appeal to pull in ratings. And it is pretty good. The Rotten Tomatoes numbers have been trending upward, season over season.

Or, is there a problem with the ratings system not keeping up with how viewers consume TV programming? I suspect this is at least a factor.

Plus there appears to have been a bad business decision made by SyFy: either they under-valued potential revenues from streaming, or they failed to grasp how many viewers prefer streaming to "live."

The first point is categorically incorrect. The show IS pulling good numbers, just not the highest on SyFy. And it pulls in MORE via streaming.

The second point is the problem. Ratings of online viewing within a week after the air-date count towards the ratings. Most shows aren't available via streaming until a day after that window closes.

As for this being a bad business decision by SyFy, well, duh. This same issue is literally what killed Stargate as a franchise. SGU had excellent ratings via online views, but not day-of. SyFy, in their infinite wisdom, allowed the SGU to be viewed on Hulu day-after for the first few episodes and then they cut to not releasing the episodes until 30 fucking days later. They thought this would drive people to watch the show as it aired. Morons. All of them. And the same kind of idiotic thinking got the shit deal for The Expanse signed.

Now, again, we're back to The Expanse IS NOT cancelled. It just needs a new home. SyFy WAS NOT production, they were just a venue by which the show was seen. They can find a new venue. Calling the show "cancelled" is like saying your favorite band broke up because they're a local act and the bar they normally play in burned down. It's just inaccurate. Someone else will either pick the show up or, since the show hasn't been grabbed elsewhere, likely SyFy is trying to strong arm them into a better deal for the network than the boneheaded one they agreed to for seasons 1-3.
