First real experience with the Ikari company.

Hey all. I recently left my ONYX and CA on the shelf to try my hands at the most inglorious but well paid mercenaries. When I started playing infinity JSA was my first faction so half of what I needed was just lying in a box, waiting for this day.

This post will describe in a short report three battles I fought yesterday, my reflections and many some narrative text to link my battles.

The missions were Supplies, capture and protect and finally Unmasking.

All the missions required some midfield control, something I find Ikari quite weak at with only one infiltrator. Luckily we have bikes and space pirates to pick up the slack.

My list looked something like this

    Group 1

    4 Keisotsu
    Brawler sniper
    Tanko flamenspeer
    Doctor and helpbot
    Rui shi
    Fugazi
    EVO hacker

    Group 2
    Brawler LT
    Brawler HRL
    Tanko Harris
    Ninja hacker
    2 desperados
    4 yuan yuan

My alternative list switched the ninja for Yojimbo and the Fugazi for a Pathfinder.

    Story 1

Outside of the dampening field the noice was deafening. The club smelled of exotic fumes and sweaty bodies. It was the common place for a battle briefing for the Company, the captain preferred to keep work and entertainment side by side and since most money they made ended up in the club anyway it seamed reasonable for the club to allow them to use it for briefing.

Captain Yuri spoke up and pointed at the holo console displaying a map of a downtown industrial complex.

    - Shut up and sit down Yojimbo, no one cares about your misplaced koala.
    - We have a new job and it pays pretty fucking well, maybe enough to rent a new engineer dropout from some shithole and upgrade that old Rui Shit.

The captain sure liked to sprinkle some profanity into her language.

    - We are to liberate some illegal biochemical components from a Nomad shipping company, we can expect some serious opposition but nothing we can’t handle

    - Sober the fuck up, find my sorry excuse for a bodyguard and meet me in the piss stinking alley in half an hour
    .

    First game, Supplies against Nomads.

My opponent won the wip roll and chose side. It was a hard choice because the table realm favoured one side with easier access to the centre objective. Really great setup because otherwise going first is always better. I got first turn and was happy.

I deployed with bikes to the left and right to provide smoke to my MSV brawler and to cover the objectives. My box openers were my doctor and my EVO. The ninja hid behind the central objective in HD.

My opponent deployed two Morans and their koalas covering the right and central objective, no surprise there. A camo token that everyone knew was an intruder HMG and a TR bot covered his central board with some cheerleaders and camo scattered about. He was definitely holding something in HD or AD, probably about a third of his army but I rarely play against Nomads so I wasn’t sure exactly what.

    First turn

I needed to clear the koalas and luckily I also had just the right space pirates to do the Jobb.
My EVO offsetting the penalty for inferior combat jump saw most of them fall to their death just were I wanted. One koala remained and two yuan yuan were unconscious, the other two dead.
    It’s a dirty work.

My bikes advanced and tossed smoke, the one on the left triggering the last koala but survived.
With smoke covering the choke points (I thought) now was the time to remove some threats.

My brawler engages the TR bot but due to my poor placement of smoke it could draw a bead on me without shooting into the template. I lost the fight but my brawler passed his save and opted to drop prone behind cover. The desperado placed more smoke and advanced towards the left objective, this time the smoke was placed smarter.

Next order saw the brawler hit the TR bot three times, bye bye remote.
Now feeling a bit safer both the doctor and the EVO advanced and opened the left and right boxes. On the right side everything went smoothly, box opens, Desperado picks up the loot and head for home. Just like planed

On my left however, a HD hacker appear and immobilises my poor EVO halfway back to my deployment zone with the supply. I was out of order now in the the first group so the EVO was simply left there. It was up to my Desperado to clean some house on the board with the last orders. She quickly put a bullet in the hacker and then tried to hunt down the central Moran but it proved to be a nimble opponent. Last order had them locked in combat at least.

    Opponents turn.

Having suffered only minor casualties my opponent went to work.
His Morlock rushed towards my Desperado who was fighting the Moran. Two against one with an opponent who cheated and used marital arts my brawler went down fast. She was more used to brawling in bars.
He then stood his Intruder up and plugged my EVO, sure wish I had brought a engineer.
Next order on the intruder pitted him against my brawler MSV. Hard fight but he won, I once against passed save and ducked.

From the skies now a Hellcat appears and tries to land behind my broken EVO to take my Supplies. It fails it PH roll and lands in his deployment zone instead.

Last orders moves his Moran closer to,the central objective where my ninja is lurking and putts the hellcat on suppression. He also tries to hack my Rui ship with his interventor but BTS 6 is hard to crack.

    Turn 2

With two objectives in my half of the table I mostly used the second turn to remove threats. My brawler sniper fought his intruder, lost, fell unconscious, was healed, relinked and tried again. No more intruder. He then removed the hellcat and was pleased.
I moved a few pieces around, handed the box over from my bike to a Keisotsu and moved the link so my Keisotsu linkleader could grab the second box from the broken EVO.

    Opponents turn

Running a bit low on orders he sends the Moran to capture the objective in the middle. I decided to reveal my ninja and fire the tactical bow. It was risky since the Moran had a repeater and he had a killer hacker on the field but if I killed the Moran the repeater was no threat and he had no other specialist close enough to take the objective.

Ninja misses the shot, killer hacker does killy things to my ninja who falls unconscious but his Moran does not have enough orders to open the box so not a total disaster.

With his other group he advances his doctor towards my Keisotsu linkleader to steal her box but my last Desperado is in the way. They have a surprisingly long shootout but both of them fall unconscious in the end.

    Turn 3

Only one objective left unopened and a unconscious ninja in the way. Sounds like a Jobb for my doctor! (Seriously, both me and my opponent spent a surprising amount of orders on our doctors)
She runs from one side of the board to the next, on the way she revived a Yuan yuan with a medkit. The space pirate was so happy to be back that he joyfully hid the ninja and the objective with smoke.
The doctor walks into the smoke to revive the ninja but fails and I’m out of command tokens.
She instead opens the objective and pick up the box and barely manages to retreat and hide behind a wall, covered by my Ru Shi and a Keisotsu.

    Opponents turn

Few orders left but he has an ace in his sleeve.
Another hellcat walks in on my board edge close to my Keisotsu with the box, if he can shoot her, take the box and drop my doctor it’s a draw. No guts no glory.

The hellcat advanced but was quickly flashpulsed by my brave Keisotsu. No box for you.
With no other option then to try to shoot my doctor his Moran advanced on a dangerous mission. He survived three shots from various ARO pieces but the Rui Shi got him in the end, mission unfulfilled.

8-0 to Ikari, no one managed a classified.

    Story 2

The loud screaming from the engines made conversation in anything but a screaming voice impossible. Luckily Yuri had plenty of screaming left in her.

    - Stop whining Takeida, its only a flesh wound. Doc says your likely to survive
    - Things sure escalated in that firefight and our employers are unwilling to pay full price for the merchandise with so much heat trailing it but don’t worry. I have a plan.

Everyone now gave her their full attention, when the captain had a “plan”things usually went south pretty fast.

    - We weaponise the merchandise and place it in a residential sector, then demand a ransom not to detonate the bomb and quickly make away with the money.
    - I know just the right place and it will be easy, like taking cookies from a Preta!

Shito, the Desperado raised her gloved fist to get the attention.

    - Boss, its crazy risky.
    - Any terror threat will get us the fucking knights down our neck. And that brat Joan de fucking Ark is here to supervise a humanitarian relief effort, I saw it on the news.

An angry glare from Bambam, Yuris bodyguard and disgraced Tanko silenced what was only the beginning of Shitos usual complains.

Captain Yuri chambered a round in her rifle.

    - No time for complaining, we unload and prepare to defend this position until the ransom comes through. Anything or anyone that gets our way is considered a threat and treated as such.

    Game 2 vs Military Orders

Same board, same deployment zone but a different list.
Ninja out and Yojimbo in! My plan was to use Yojimbos koalas to protect my beacon and the man himself to capture my opponents. He’s fast, semi resilient with nwi and can at least fight his way out of a paper bag if needed (it would prove really handy)

I deploy pretty much like the last time, expecting less shenanigans and more knights.

My opponent deploys a four man fusiler linkteam with bipandara, a multi sniper and a missile launcher, swc heavy.
He covered his beacon with a TR bot, a black friar sniper and an order sergeant with a flamebot. On his right a ODD bot with spitfire was hiding. So many bots and so few knights?
At least Joan of Arc showed up with her warcor, that’s some serious attention for a lowlife mercy company ;)

    First turn

My space pirates drop in, two dies straight away but one lands close to the bots and one walks in nest to the linkteam. Pretty good.

My bikes advanced and dropped smoke in nice colours, Yojimbo put his koalas on standby.
    Then the real fight begins.
My yuan yuan rushes out and hits both the TR and the ODD bots with his chainrifle. Both pass save and my pirate dies, bad start. I later realised that I could have crawled the model and used his ODD bot as cover to not be seen by the TR bot but still hit it with the template. Next time!

My other pirate does better and takes out the fusi with missiles. He dies in the process but now his link doesn’t have SS lv 2 anymore.
My brawler sniper now does his job and kills the TR bot, the Blackfriar and the fusi sniper.
So much swc gone so quickly.

The way is now cleared for Yojimbo who dashes for the beacon. On the way a hidden order sergeant appears and shots him in the back. A quick turnaround and some close combat solved that (had I known she had mines I would have been a lot more careful, luckily she fired instead of dropping mines)

He reaches the objective, grabs the beacon and speeds for home, job well done.

My last orders puts my Rui Shi in suppressive fire a bit to far forward and that’s turn.

    Opponents first turn.

Hard start, only the ODD bot left with serious firepower and Joan with a multi rifle.
The bot rolled out and engaged both a Keisotsu and Yojimbo. The Keisotsu died but Yojimbo dropped smoke to cover both himself and my brawler. Any move with the bot now would be hazardous. My opponent sends Joan to deal with the Rui Shi and they both roll 3 dices, hitting on sixes. I’m pretty happy When I rolls five but she crits and disables my bot, sure wish I had brought an engineer....

With his last orders he moves a TO camo token forward and then puts Joan inte suppression.

    Turn two

I’m in a good spot. I have the beacon and orders to spare.
With my second group I move the brawler HRL to take a shot at Joan. I don’t expect to kill her but I have orders to spare in that group since every bike and yuan yuan is dead.
First volley gives me a crit and a hit on Joan and she instantly dies, suprise for everyone.
I then realises one member of my Harris is my bats tracker so I start running them towards my captured beacon currently in the hands of a Keisotsu.

The link moves around a bit but nothing really happens.

    Opponents turn two.

He is now in loss of lieutenant and far from my beacon.
His TO camo reveals to shoot my brawler HRL but I crit on a 3 and it dies horribly.
The rest of his orders he uses to advance his ODD bot, kill a link member and enter suppressing fire closer to my deployment zone.

    Turn three

Not much left to handle, Yojimbo drops smoke to cover his advance and slices the ODD bot in half. My datatracker steals the beacon from my angry Keisotsu and my EVO datascans the headless order sergeant.

My opponent declines to play his last turn with two fusilers and a warcor and it’s game over.

    10-0 to Ikari

    Story 3

The sound of the drop ship was overwhelming and it smelled of ozone and burning plastic.
The private spaceport was open for business after some persuading from Bambara part, they were close to another work completed and another death sentence dodged.

Captain Yuri killed her com call and gathered the troops, she did not look happy.

    - Bad news, really bad news. Our money checks out ok but there was a whiteness to the incident, a whiteness who is trying to rat us out to the kempeitai.

Several of the Mercs suddenly looked extremely uncomfortable.

    - Yeah, I know, I know. It’s bad but it doesn’t have to mean that the whiteness will have a chance to talk. Not if we get to her first.

    - We have three possible locations, safe houses for protected persons downtown. We hit all three, identifies the real rat and silence her for good. If anyone gets in our way, make sure they also stay silent.

    - Let’s Roll!

Last game of the day, Unmasking vs JSA

Same board, other deployment side and this time I went second (not my choice!)

My opponent played a super aggressive alpha strike list with arogotos, a Keisotsu link with a MSV marksman rifle and Neko as obvious lieutenant. He also had two unit 9:s one ODD and one HRL.

I deploy my link with several members covering the choke point where his bikes must pass and one yuan yuan close to the link to cover the brawler in smoke.

    Opponents first turn.

Bikes rushes forward into my AROs but unlike my bikes who die to AROs these bikes did just fine. Killed two Keisotsu and put a wound on my tanko who unleashed his flamenspeer. My opponent passed eight saves in a row, including two saves on a mine that got hit by a flamenspeer, wtf?
My brawler at least got covered in smoke which sounded fine until his kempeitai marksman crited him from 39” away. Shock, death.

One aragoto killerhacker activates a console and revealed a fake hwt, killed my EVO and entered suppressing fire in my deployment zone. I sure wish I had brought an engineer....
Kitsune appears close to the fake hwt and opens fire but the fake survives!
He then puts the other bike, kitsune and the ODD unit 9 in suppressive fire.

    My first turn

Demoralised and missing several key pieces (Keisotsu link now a duo) I sent my Desperado to kill the killerhacker and kitsune. Kitsune went down bud the bike passed save and my bike took a dirt nap. Stupid killerhacker.
Next order sent my yuanyuan at the killerhacker but it once again passed save. Stupid killerhacker....

Luckily my opponent gave me a beer to lift my spirit, much needed!
The rest of my space pirates landed smoothly, on close to his TR bot, one behind the linkteam and one walked on closer to my deployment zone.

The pirates sprung their trap and the first one dropped the TR bot and a Keisotsu without dying, super nice. The next one engaged the link and downed yuriko oda and the Kempeitai also without dying. Best pirates ever.

My last Desperado attack’s Yojimbo, plugs him with a heavy pistol crit but dies to the koala. Such is life. The rest of my turn I moved the pathfinder to an objective and revealed the true Hwt and put my Rui Shi in suppressive fire closer to the midfield.

My Harris with my datatracker also moved closer to the real hwt.

    Opponents turn two

The arogoto spitfire rushes forward into los of my Rui Shi, just like I planned.
I actually won the shootout and downed the annoying bike!
He then activated his doctor who was safely hidden in a house in his deployment zone, I had really forgotten about her. She quickly kills my last pirate and failed to revive yuriko but manages to revive the kempeitai, bad news for me.

Neko, no longer slowed by a link rushes forward but can’t get to far if he doesn’t want to meet my brawler HRL. The doctor used a lot of orders so this I pretty much all that happened.

    My turn two

I send my pathfinder to the second objective and reveals another hwt, this one conveniently enough on the way to the real one for my Harris. They quickly dash for the fake one and my tanko gives her a hit of the old shock ccw. One point for me. I’m now at a turning point. I could either dig in an go for the real hwt next turn or transform a irregular order with a command token and reveal that my lieutenant is my datatracker by spending the lieutenant order but possibly kill the real hwt this turn.
    No guts no glory.

I send my Harris against the real hwt, the path is however blocked by a unit 9 in suppressive fire. I send my Tanko against her, hiding my datatracker behind a wall and my HRL advances a bit farther, to far it proves as the unit 9 with HRL spits her and fires!
Everyone in the Harris is covered by the template so I have to dodge to save my lieutenant. He rolls a crit and everyone is hit but both the tanko and my lieutenant passes their save!

My HRL dies to the crit of course and the tanko takes a sound from the suppressing smg but I can now spend my LT order to shoot the hwt with my light shotgun! One hit, one miss and the hwt passes his save. Disaster! (Five minutes later I realise that 18 is not a miss with a shotgun at close range, it’s a crit... to late)

My last order I used the Rui Shi to kill the HRL unit 9, should have done that earlier....

    Opponents last turn.

He now knows who my lieutenant is and has the marksman to do the job. One shot in the back and she is gone, loss of lieutenant for my last turn with no command tokens left.

He then sends Neko to kill my Tanko, something that will prove quite hard.

Low on orders he uses assault to quickly get into close combat but my tanko rolls better than Neko and kills him with the monofilament sword! Go Tanko!

He’s out of orders now and Neko was his datatracker.

    My last turn

I have only one play and it’s the Tankos impetus order followed by his irregular order. Impetus order kills the unit 9 and the next order moves him into close combat with the real hwt who he then crits to death. Give this Tanko a raise!

Nothing left to do, can’t fix my classified but the last move ended the game 7-0 for Ikari.

    Conclusion

Ikari is crazy fun to play. Low on camo and infiltrators but high in irregular and disposable troops. This is far from my elite units from CA and ONYX.

If my opponents place ARO pieces my brawler removes them, if they don’t the yuan yuan run haywire and cause trouble. Smoke everywhere and fast, cheep bikes.

My lists worked great but I might need an engineer :)

Sorry for lack of pictures, I get so caught up in the game so I usually forget to take any.

If you managed to read this far, great going!

Thorough write up, much appreciated. As a fellow Onyx/CA player, I was quite interested to hear how the disposable/irregular troops work for Ikari and it sounds like you managed just fine, despite some misplays and hiccups. I just need to sort out my Brawler proxies and get some Desperadoes/Yojimbo and Tanko proxies until May to give it a shot.
