So, I was wondering if this is good or not. Or even worth it. Shaolin can duo in vYJ and White Banner. For some reason I had a blank spot in my eyes that never looked at the Smoke Grenade Launcher. Probably because of that BS10, 10pts, and .5SWC, I never saw it as anything worth taking. The only ones with it in vanilla are the Shaolin (10pts) and Celestial Guard Monitor (13pts and can’t duo in vYJ). Shaolin is the only one in WB. So now, Shaolin can duo and they can get a +1 SD. They can shoot up to 24” with two dice on BS10. A lot better! Then the one with the regular smoke grenades can throw up to 8 on 16s and 8-16 on 13s. On paper it doesn’t seem worth it. But I’ve noticed a problem when playing vanilla. I didn’t have that smoke projection like I did with the Celestial in a fireteam. The need to keep the smoke within 8 or 16” is a bit troublesome. I guess I should just try it and see but does anyone have experience with them?
IMO, that's a bad idea on so many levels for Vanilla. 1. You lose 3 orders to do so (2 Irregulars are generated by monks and they can't even spend them+1 regular to try tossing smoke) 2. BS10 is extremely unreliable. 3. If you need long ranged vision control, why no Hwarang? Throws disco with 2 dice on 15s within 16, generates regular order. Or just impetuous smoke toss with a monk I think a monk in vanilla should be linked only with some model that require smoke to cover approach (e.g. Su-Jian, Blue Wolf) or some brawler unit that can't defend in CC (e.g. Mowang, Kokram) WB is a different story, maybe if you take regular monk fireteam it can be an interesting choice. Still, you will be missing many shots with that GL.
No. Regular smoke grenades are so lightwight, that they can not generate a +3 up to 8" like ordinary grenades can do ;-) A nerv that came with the beginning of N5. I tried it and yes, you wasting orders and with the two monks seprate you can cover two different LoFs - maybe on each flank. If you place them well, each has two chances.
Thanks to both. I started to think the same things. And yes I forgot that grenades are no longer +3 with in 8".
