Hi guys, I had an interesting rules argument during a tournament I recently participated in with my opponent.

I moved my Mobile Brigada with HMG (MB HMG) into a position to shoot Nourkias, who was in Engaged State with my Mobile Brigada ML (MB ML). Both Nourkias and MB ML were in the open.
My MB HMG rolled 4 dice, with 2 hits passing the SV for shooting into CC, and 2 hits failed. Nourkias declared Dodge for his ARO. Nourkais passed his SV and his dice were higher than my SV for the MB HMG.

The argument from my opponent was that all 4 of the MB HMG hits were to pass to my MB ML. My argument was that only the failed BS attacks would hit my MB ML, while my success were defeated by Nourkias's dodge roll.

    Evidence:
Page 25 of the updated rules grey box with possible outcomes state, "Both pass. The Trooper with the higher successful roll cancels the enemy successes, wins the Face to Face Roll and achieves its goal."

Page 40 of the rules state "Every failed BS Attack Roll will hit the Allied Trooper, forcing them to perform a Saving Roll. If there are several Allied Troopers locked in that Close Combat, then the Trooper’s player chooses which one of them receives each hit."

The rules on p.25 indicate that my BS attacks are not failures, and did succeed, only my opponent's dice rolls were higher, thus cancelling my success. Rules on p.40 indicate that only my failed BS attacks to hit Nourkias would hit my allied MB ML and not including my successes that were canceled by the FtF.

Have I read and interpreted the rules interaction correctly? It was slowly becoming a heated debate, with my interpretation being agreed upon during the game. I just want to know the correct interpretation and play-though for next time I experience the same situation.

    Thanks.

You can also add p. 23 to your argument.

That saidxyou were and are correct because the rules on p.25 clearly differentiate between failed and cancelled successful rolls.

Which also makes me wonder - unless you were shooting the HMG within 8"of Nurikias - how was he allowed to Dodge in the first place.
Being in CC, he didn't have LoS to anythign outside of the said CC, did he...?

And he lacks 6th Sense skill.

I would also say that according to my understanding you are correct, I just don't see there being a redistribution of hits after resolution step.

And as Errhile points out, a trooper cannot declare ARO to shooting while Engaged in CC, unless they have Sixth Sense or if shooter was inside ZoC, since Engaged trooper cannot draw LoS outside of CC.

And if shooter is within ZoC, target then gets -3 to Dodge, due to being inside ZoC but outside LoF (unless if they have Sixth Sense).

    Thanks @Tristan228 , @Errhile , and @micropoint for your responses.

Remembering the tournament some more, I think the MB ML was in Unconscious State when Nourkias moved into Engaged State. Re-reading the rules, Engaged State does not occur if a trooper is in a Null state. My opponent performed a Coup de Grace afterwards. So he did have the opportunity to declare an ARO.
It is difficult to remember exactly. The main point of contention was the distribution of hits. Even so, technically, none of the failed hits would trigger a saving roll for my MB ML because the engaged state was not valid.

Anyway, what is done is done. I will know for next time. I am not often in CC attacks during my games, almost everything is shot to dead. So perhaps my ignorance of the rules was used to my opponent's advantage. A good learning curve, that's for sure.

A hacker can declare dodge ARO against outside of ZoC BS attacks while engaged assuming that the activated trooper is inside a repeater area. This dodge roll doesn’t even suffer any mods. This is somewhat important gotcha interaction for Nourkias.

    I'm not sure that's true.
Can you support your assertion with rules references?

It is true because nothing in the dodge rules says it has a MOD and they have an ARO due to someone activating in hacking area.

Seems like FAQ territory. RAW you are quite right, but the spirit of the rules (no-LoF attack, does not have the benefit of an activation inside ZoC) indicates the trooper should have a malus.

It's existed in the rules for nearly 2 years at this point and survived the edition change so it is just what it is
