You might have seen my previous thread - A scheme fit for heroes about an Aleph force. It is not complete by my standards, so if the owner decides to return to it, I might get a few more models to paint. Now, I'm getting a new commission - Tartary Army Corps, from the same player. Well, here is a link to the gallery folder, because there were problems with pics not showing up in the previous thread. Keep in mind it is the same folder I used for Aleph, so you'll see Aleph there in the front. I haven't got the TAK models yet, but I took two of very old, non-CB figures I've badly painted ages ago, stripped them, and used them as test models: Spoiler: Some more pics of the two Now, I got two requests from the owner. One, he wanted LoS across the whole base - for gameplay purposes. I can get behind that. Two, when asked about the desired color scheme, he told me "make them Ukrainian". For me, that meant trying to emulate the MM-14 camo pattern. Digital camo on miniatures is far beyond my skill, so I tested two receptures found on the net - and the one on the observer is definitely better, so I'll be sticking to it. The green camo tunics (and similar camo garments) are going to be reserved for models with Camouflage skill. ...well, hoping to get the Cossacks on my workbench by the end of the week, and we'll see it form there :)
And here we go: Spoiler: More of the trio ...the third Line Kazak turned out to be a mispack, so I took the Doktor into the works (the replacement parts for the Line Kazak got delivered from the CB in the mantime. If anyone's interested - reported a mispack on May 1st, got a confirmation from CB on May 3rd, and the replacement part was in my mail on May 10th. That's within the EU though). He'll be coming with a late batch for painting, then. I wonder if I'll be able to finish the next trio (Frontovik, Tankhunter & Veteran Kazak) by the end of the month :)
Hi, painting camo is not an easy job. Miniatures are so tiny that you cannot "copy" the pattern, and if you try it usually looks like a blurry mess of colours and you lose the definition of the figure. I had the same problems when I started painting modern soldiers for other games. Here are some tips that I learned in the hard way... -Simplify the pattern: modern camo usually mixes three or even four colours in many diferent shapes over a base. It's impossible to do the same at scale. You need to do bigger spots, bigger lines and bigger triangles... and let the base colour visible: -Break up the camo a bit: painting the entire miniature in camo will hide all the details, mix it with plain colours on armour, pouches, boots... -Use matt paint: uniforms and cloths are in general matt. You can use paint ranges suited for military models, they have a wide variety of tones for this purposes. Apart from this, digital camo is specially hard, that dots are difficult to obtain. Stipling tecniques are more suited for that style. Here's an interesting tutorial from the LazyPainter that will come in handy: https://lazypainter.com/camouflage-speedpainting I hope that it helps you a bit!
Well, I have used singular colors on the equipment - so the pouches and packs do stand out. The uniform was done with a sponge (2 colors) and then with brush (final color), as it was difficult to get the sponge into nooks and crannies.
Looking great so far! I’m also foraying back into camo painting with my haqqi so I know how much of a pain it can be. I particularly like the line kazak doctor, not sure why but she really stands out. Love the “modern” guns. They look very much like current armaments. I’ll look forward to more!
@Gwynbleidd Because they, essentially, are modern guns. OSW-58 (which is basically a modern adaptation of the good old FN-FAL) with a folding stock, in most cases a 30rd magazine, and then various optics (these three have, obviously, holoshights / red dots patterned after EOTech holosight) with relevant mounts and mounting rails, as well as polymer fronts with various styles of forward vertical grips. The color I used for furniture is also one I've seen on firearms. Seems familiar? :D The Kazak Doktor was intended as a nod towards a certain TV character from the era past.
I knew about the guns, I guess CB wanted a kind of modern feel for Ariadna, but the information on the kazak doctor is very interesting, thanks! Not sure what it is but she really stands out with you. She my favourite you’ve done so far for TAK.
Well, moving on. Veteran Kazak, Tankhunter & Frontovik: Spoiler: More of them: Sorry, no 4th photo, I forgot to take it in a hurry :(
Today, Dozer, Vassily Pluschenko & Scout. ...anyone has an idea why the Dozer got eqipped with an aircraft carrier's deck crew helmet..? Spoiler: More if the trio Next batch will be 112 Emergency Service, Strelok & the final Line Kazak.
112, Line Kazak & Strelok: Spoiler: More of the bunch ...which leaves me with the Ratnik, but he's slotted for July.
OK, here's the Ratnik: Spoiler: More of the big boy: Thus, I'm through the Ariadna Action Pack + Support Pack. Which means I can expect some lull here, till my customer decides what he does want next. So, because I can (and I have the whole gang present):
And we're back into the fray: Spoiler: More of them ....the third Spetsnaz turned out to be a mispack, so he's on the waiting list until CB sends me the missing part. Note: the Spetsnaz here are painted to resemble Ukrainian Naval Infantry (i.e. marines) - I tried to match the color of the berets they currently wear, and the striped shirt is intended to be the dark-blue-on-white striped shirts of the Ukrainian Navy (which the marines - at least at some point - wore).
The Streloks are coming... Spoiler: More of Streloks also the Scouts (along with the missing Spetsnaz) Spoiler: more of them and Veteran Kazaks Spoiler: more of them ...what can i say, May was a busy month this year...
OK, this one was a chore. I don't like painting bikes, as there are waaaay too many nooks and crannies, and therefore they need to be painted in separate bits. But here we are. Spoiler: More of the Dynamos Given these were the last of the TAK batch I was given to paint, and the new edition is around the corner, I guess i'll be seeing some hiatus on this project. Plus, my customer is eyeing the new edition's JSA, so I might be painting some space samurai in the future. We'll see.
