Yeah, the main thing I'm worried about is being caught up in some Japanese imperialist apologia. I'm fine with Kenpeitai being in the game as long as they aren't portrayed in an unrealistically heroic light. I mean, the American colonists on Dawn are portrayed fairly positively - but let's not forget that they're involved in a fairly brutal situation with a native population that they consider more or less subhuman. I'm not Native American at all, but there are certain awkward implications from not only having Americans engaged in that kind of activity portrayed heroically, but also that the American colonists portrayed heroically while the "natives" are literally nonhuman. Sort of perpetuates the Western/White as default state of humanity idea.
I live in a world where I and other people have and are discussing offense in a space game with catgirls, druze criminal families, big robots, and every society moves forward by falling back on cultural roots. I live in a fantasy world.
@Abd Al-Azrad It's because we love this game and there is nothing wrong with that. CB has always seemed to have a massive Japan good China bad bias, but it's only with the Kampeitai that it extends to modern history. If it's out of ignorance, isn't it noble to correct it? Let CB make the game they want, but let all the decisions be informed right? Don't tell them what to do, but let them know what's going on. @Hecaton I read the desperado unit description the other way, that the authors wanted us to walk away knowing that the displacement of the native population is unethical and driven by some really bad people. They want the frontier spirit to be at the forefront of their design, and you can't have that without Cowboys and Indians. Although the antipodes are primitive and savage (an allegory), the tone isn't hateful, it made me regret the whole "it's us or them conflict" that the humans never asked for but now they have it and some real creeps relish in it.
The most mature post lol. It's more like... That seems to be tooting your own horn a bit to call discussing this Noble ma dude. Little bit much.
Going for a record. People are using their own time to provide input and even educate using evidence out of love for the game, (education is noble) and posts like "it's just a game bro" belittle them for no actual value.
Oh and while I'm thinking about it. Teaching people random useless information to get your point across in a fantasy cyberpunk game is not noble. If you want to that is fine, but calling it noble is too much for me.
I can dig that. A storyline of reconciliation and unification between the humans and Antipodes would be pretty neat; I want that Dog Nation sectorial for my Ariadna. That said, I think they're moving away from the original "Yu Jing are brutal oppressors of the noble underdog Japanese" in the new fluff. And I think that's a good change, adds depth to the setting. The new Kesotsu fluff that basically implies that their status with the Domaru is "Get back in line, peasant" was a nice touch.
How Magnanimous indeed. See, that's another issue with those self-appointed educators. Treating other people from a (perceived) moral high ground does not help their argument, especially when it's fundamentally ideological. The example with US-Ariadna exterminating the allegorical Indians of Dawn made me giggle, because I had never seen it that way, even though it is really obvious in hindsight. One might get the impression that CB is doing these things on purpose ...
The dogs had it coming. We had to enlighten them with bullets to stop eating us. Carlos is confirmed for ALT Right
Now you've made me curious ... I'll check that one out immediately :) Edit: Nah, I'm not too big on the whole "Yeehaa, let's whoop some ass" mentality, but I can appreciate the sentiment.
I have been playing miniatures games for a long time and, frankly, this is the most absurd thing I have ever seen in a discussion board for the hobby. Is Kempeitai insensitive? Who cares? Honestly, has anyone been offended by this?....... Anyone?
Who cares? Seems it's worthy of a literal third of your postcount, so maybe you? Thank you for your quality contribution.
Or perhaps the literal third of my postcount has to do with being a new member to the forum who has only posted 3 times? Does this qualify as a quality contribution? I only ask because I'm new. Either way, the topic is still a little ridiculous. It is just a game right? I highly doubt the creative team at CB were sitting in their offices attempting to create anything other than a flavorful element for a fun game. If anyone anywhere is offended by something in a game then that is on them. It is not the responsibility of CB to ensure that they create something that wont offend anyone.
That is a fact. It is the fact that compels me me to chime in when a topic like this comes up. I certainly do not mean to offend or cause problems, but it seems necessary to point out the absurdity in certain things. Especially when those certain things start creeping into fun games and hobbies.
Hate to read back to you your own thread name, but the question was: Not "are you personally offended by it", or "should CB change the fiction to be more sensitive". And ironically, people who are (perhaps rightly) concerned about creeping PC attitudes impeding creator's freedom of expression have mainly just chimed in to say suggest that the discussion should not even take place (soft censorship). The spectrum of responses has been interesting, save for the "it's just a game bro" posts, which might as well be saying "fuck you" to the people who take it seriously or are just enjoying discussions peripherally related to the game they like. The setting of INFINITY is important. I and many others I assume would not be playing it if it was a WW2 game for example.
