I finally finished my cheap plastic toy "Space Hawk" spaceship and can now use it in its intended role as a terrain piece of my desert/mars creater table. Quite happy with how it turned out.

I have one too, waiting for me to decide on a colour scheme.
actually I have two, but one is used by the kids...

Did you do something about the opening mechanism? or fix the wings?

It's in the title, "Space Hawk", another "videogame with physical models" thing (which sooner or later becomes wargames terrain as it's good and proper), here's what seems to be the official site, and a quick search on ebay shows the "starter set" going as low as 9.95€

Edit: Ah, beat me to it

No, I left them as they are. Theoretically they can still be opened, but I didn't really paint the interior and don't intend to do it. If I ever decide otherwise, I can still work on the interior.

Looks like I can't get in the US. :full_moon_with_face:

There was a pretty cool looking ship at Adepticon. A few said it looked fantastic but it was hell to play on. The only cover you could get was inside the sip and it was a pain to take it apart and move things inside. The table does look amazing though!

Great paint job and great piece of terrain.
The only complain I'll get is that it makes Maggie looks a small and tiny cute thing

Thanks! At least it looks like it could actually transport Maggie. :D

And this is my solution for the awkward space below the ship. The blast from the engines makes it impassable...

Great solution. I ponder about something like that but transparent (plastic film? vacuum formed box, or tubes, remelt with heat?), so it looks distorted and can be shoot thru but not crossed. Another is making a custom crater for the ship (if the landing gear can be put in "stored" easily or if you don't mind losing "properly landed" option).

The landing platform by TTCombat is too small for the Space Hawk, but I've got an Efreet Dropship in the works that is a good fit, so it got a quick coat of paint.

    These are great!
I have this space hawk and a bunch of 'StarLink' ships lying around that I want to use in a 'boarding action' board, but they look too intimidating to paint! What's your process? How long did it take? Is it a 'plan everything up front' or a 'wing it' as you go deal?

Thanks! Certainly more a "wing it as I go along" thing. :D An airbrush with a sufficiently large needle (0.4mm here) is a timesaver. My process roughly is the following, but I tend to go back and forth between a few steps.

    - Base prime with airbrush (saves money) or rattle can (saves time)
    - airbrush with base color
    - airbrush with one highlight
    - airbrush with a second highlight
    - painting some color accents (greens), windows, and the black parts with a brush
    - some drydrushing with grey and whilte on the black parts
    - going over the grooves with a bit of a wash to make them more prominent (Agrax Earthshade)
    - painting some highlights on the most prominent wing edges
    - painting a few lights with a neon color and a bit of glazing
    - weathering with some Nuln Oil, dust pigments and possible some black sponge markings
    - matte spray varnish
    - decals

Time overall is diffifult, since I do it ins spurts and it sat there half-finished for quite a while. It didn't take too long in total (6-8 hours perhaps?), the trick was not to try to be as neat or detailed as on a mini. Rough work is fine on such a model (for me at least).
