Bullshit. You can have all of that without making a bland model. All it requires is some imagination.

Example of an interesting fantasy dwarf model:

Anyway. I'm not even opposed to having bland dwarves - they're hard to make interesting, and you are correct some people like plain and classic designs. What I'm critiquing their choice of first revealed miniature.

I agree with you in that. It was a big meh when i saw. IDK if it was the race/class combination or what.

But the only innovation in warcrow (probably) will be the varanks and revealing the desing at this point could be too early.

    Could be an agenda decision.

Or the dwarf is the only character in a "near to show" state, who knows.

PS. feels odd to use "dwarf" for both male and female. Is dwarfette a thing or...?

Dwarf, elf, orc, etc aren't really gendered in english.

finally saw the video. Story seems ok. The character and figure seem very meh to me. And I hate the dice. I hope they don't use those for the skirmish game. I guess it's ok for a board game. I think I was expecting something a bit more innovative. The art was ok but the dwarf looks like it's from some "insert mobile game here".

Not really. I don't think there were female dwarves in Germanic folklore. There were none in Tolkien. But this is a fantasy game, so it's up to the creatrix of the game (creatriz, creatress...) if there are any. Maybe try Dwarf-maiden?

No matter, it's a species name, like human, so not sex specific. And not like Dog/Bitch where dog is both species and male name, and bitch is female. or Fox/vixen for that matter. But then we have Cat/tom/queen, horse/stallion/mare, chicken/rooster/hen, sheep/ram/ewe and so forth. Don't even start on the collective nouns... A wake of vultures when they are on the ground, but a kettle of vultures when they are in air. An exultation of larks, pandemonium of parrots, murder of crows, pack of wolves, flock of sheep, school of fish, nattering of nabobs, pod of whales, flamboyance of flamingos, troop of baboons, pride of lions, congregation of alligators, rafter of turkeys. zeal of zebras...

Technically, there was one. But merely mentioned (Dis, mother of Fili and Kili and sister of Thorin Oakenshield) in the appendixes to LotR. I don't have the English edition to check any hints on how Tolkien referred to her in terms of gender.
He did pull a trick on the plural form of "dwarf" after all. Might have had something clever in mindfor female dwarfs... I mean, dwarves.

But that's a nitpicking on my side.

Plus, with all the reverence to J.R.R.T.'s skill and knowledge, not all elves and dwarves and small folk in fantasy have to defer to what he wrote.

While we so far have only one named character for Warcrow - so really not much to base on - it could be an interesting twist to make a switch on the traditional gender ratio of the dwarves (in many fantasy settings there are very few female dwarves around), and make them a civilisation with many females (who therefore cover most roles in a society) and relatively few males, thus making the female dwarf adventurer of the dungeon crawler a more typical example.

    Just saying.

Not just female dwarf, but female tank, doubly rare!

The mini is reminding me a lot of the art from D&D4e, whatever your opinion on the system it has excellently consistent art direction and a very cool action fantasy feel, rather than the usual mediaevalish aesthetic fantasy falls in to. I also see that CB have found space for plenty of straps and buckles even on a character in scale and plate armour, so part of me shudders to think how many straps, belts, buckles, and straps lighter armored minis will have!

Pretty sure they said in one of the first announcements that both the board game and wargame are using the same symbol dice. Seems to work pretty well for stuff like X-Wing, etc.

Looks more like some kind of a samurai rather than a dwarf to me. And the sculpt is mediocre.

I wasn't impressed by the teased miniature as well. But I was an Wood Elves player ~20 years ago and never thought of dwarves having interesting miniatures. Always the dull bodies and holding an axe or a rifle. :) The newer GW sculpts smashing something are much better.

At least I like the shield design and the (magical?) weapon. It is not just a stupid axe.

And the armor is a some kind of (talking about styles I know) WoW and SciFi style. Which is ok to me.

Sorry to divert from topic, the plastic. I've not been near a ''new'' Aristeia Model. Are we talking just as bad as original Aristeia, are we talking China horrific reaper bones bad, or is it Siocast? - Ish.

On topic, yea I don't care for the Dwarf BUT I do like the aesthetic, I never played WoW but I always thought the characters looked brilliant. Hopefully Only the board game will be terrible China plastic, and the Skirmish will be Siocast.

I'd say it'll probably be like Defiance (turrets, consoles, doors...), so good quality plastic.

They keep saying it will be Aristeia pvc with quality similar to the latest A! addons. It's more or less okay in terms of detail, but still bends too much.
Still, having siocast parts just snap in my hands, I'd be fine with aristeia pvc for a dugeon crawler.

Personally I liked the concept art and the model, it is a good start for Dwarfs design, I do want to see more of them.

I do not like Thoranic guard art and model to be honest, it feels forced and out of place, I understand it is guest art for Sean and not his creation but still, the Archeologician designed by Sean is a far better female dwarf.

A recap to answer some questions

Dungeon Crawler and Wargame, same D8s but not same engine

Dungeon Crawler miniaturas will be PVC like the Megalodron from Defiance

Wargame miniatures will be produced in house in thermoplastic (siocast is a thermoplastic brand, not a plastic type)

I'm not a fan of the Thoranic guard either; but it is an interesting and different take on dwarves that makes you think. Problem with WarCrows dwarf isn't technical execution, it's blandness. As a first miniature for a new game - new universe even - it's bad because it's forgettable.

The model reassured me about the aesthetic of the game, I really liked it and it's less bland than I thought. But I hate the D8 used as main dice, and the stat card looks confusing and not much attractive.

I'll probably not pledge the Dungeon Crawler still (unless the offer is very good), but I'm looking forward the universe and wargame.

The first miniature is quite interesting… the style reminds me of the dwarves in Dragon Age, especially Dragon Age 2. The weapon is intriguing, there’s a trigger on the handle as far as I can tell so a mix of steampunk in the designs that are upcoming will be cool. The shield is very nice, probably my favourite part of the mini, I do love a kite shield and the design on it seems dwarfy...

The miniature stance is standard heroic pose, I was hoping for something more dynamic for the first mini but I will reserve final judgement until more miniatures are shown.

@Errhile, I’m not sure that J.R.R.T had any nomenclature for female dwarves. I’ve been checking the English edition and haven’t encountered anything so far, even regarding Dis. I’ll keep looking though and if I find anything that mentions such I’ll let you know. It’d be quite interesting if there was a switch on the traditional gender ratio of dwarves, I’d end up painting one as Vi from rat queens…

I do like the style and colour of the scale armour she wears under the plate mail, at least in the Concept. The problem is that it 's not correctly reflected in the render, the diamonds are waaaay bigger. Is it because the artists decided they prefferred her miniature to look like that or is it because thet don't trust the material (the plastic) can keep the detail?

It's hard to make a dynamic armored potato... :joy:

Not so enthusiast for the first model, but it's good enough to keep me waiting for more...
