You are correct. There is no change from previous faq to 1.2 that changed how this interaction works. I did not realize this thread was as old as it was and was talking about about prior to 1.2 TO 1.2 and why there isn't anything that restricts this. What I posted is almost certainly the intents of the rules and how I have seen everyone play the interaction as but I can absolutely understand that the situation doesn't have a clear RAW answer because I can see that the bs attack changes the Lof to the ground, which is of course in sight.
Yeah that’s the thing so the two lines of this is that 1. Targetless cannot be declared in ARO which includes Smoke - Because you cannot conceivably target an active Trooper with a Targetless weapon. 2. ALL Targetless is legal in ARO including Smoke and the other sub components of that.
So, AFAIK you technically can target troopers with things like smoke grenades, it's just not required. Mainly it's going to be beneficial if you want to smoke dodge vs. someone who's targeted.
Coming back to this, and at risk of a Thread Necro: I think the rule's page on Zone of Control AROs disallows this interaction. https://infinitythewiki.com/Zone_of_Control The relevant text: You're reacting to a trooper outside of your LOF, therefore you can't declare anything but Dodge or Reset. A second caveat: Targetless weapons still need LOF to function (LOF to the point you're deploying them) unless you specfire. Even if you have LOF to your 'target' patch of ground, you still need LOF. Therefore, because you need LOF to a point to throw a Dropbear (or smoke), you are not granted an exception to the Zone of Control ARO Restrictions. (And nobody is going to argue that smoke and dropbears do not need LOF to their target - you need to specfire if you can't see where you're throwing them, so they clearly follow LOF rules. They just don't need an -enemy- target) EDIT: So apparently FAQ 1.2 completely rewrote Zone of Control and this interpretation isn't valid?
