Hacking in Vanilla

    So, I've been playing a bit of vanilla recently, and so far experimentation with hacking has been great: Given how SWC hungry vanilla yu-jing can be, and the lack of pitcher, I'd say that its better to forget the son bae and that for us hacking should be mostly defensive in nature. We have one of the only hacker with native 6th sense, and the guilangs/Kokram minelayer help deploy a very, very good repeater net in the midfield, so there's definitely some potential.

    Last few games I've played I brought only the zhanying, and it proved insufficient as he got killed easily by KHDs 2 out of 3 games, so I've been working on expending on it a bit since hacking is still, after all, a numbers game (and even more so when most of the hacking is done through repeaters). For the moment, I'd say 2 standard hackers and a KHD strikes a good balance, though it's better if they can pull off other roles as well since the points and SWC add-up very quickly.

    The rest of the list is most likely filled with a daoying/hac tao combo, a hundun, a bunch of monks, either long yas or a libertos and all the cheap stuff I can afford to fill the order count.

    There are a few options for both standard and killer hacking devices, but here are the few that really stood out for me:

    Standard Hackers

    - Zhanying: He has 6th sense, which is nice. Either you're confident enough you can force stealth units to act in your repeaters (with the help of a hundun maybe?) and you don't need him, or you do like me and you pay some points for it. In any case, he also has a decent toolbox, reasonnable classifieds capabilities (Veteran, hacker and D-charges), a DTW and some unusual ammos, so he might be able to pull his weight in other ways.

    - Celestial guard: Good hacking stats for the cost, WIP14 and BTS3 for 18pts is quite the steal.

    - Rem Racer: Only WIP 13, but BTS6 with firewall has decent odds of tanking killer hackers attacks. Also comes with the Remdriver (+1BS) boost, so pretty cool if you're playing a rui-shi/lu-duan/husong.

    Killer Hackers

    - Kanren: Great to pull triple-duty in the midfield as a deployable cleaner, skirmisher and specialist, especially the later since guilangs are busy deploying stuff on their own and doing skirmisher job with their shotgun.

    - Ninja: Good ol' ninja. I don't like her anywhere near as much in N4, but it's still an hidden deployed infiltrated specialist.

    - Tian gou: Both the cheap holomask one and the minelayer + holoechoes are decent, good stats though a bit expensive considering its yet-another-DZ-tied profile that probably won't do much besides hacking and the occasionnal holomask shenanigan.

    It's kinda funny to see that ISS hackers are actually rather good, but their home sectorial has such a ridiculous lack of repeaters it could challenge ariadna or tohaa for the spot of "worse army to play hacker with". Anyway.

    So, that's my take on the matter. Do you guys have any other insights? Maybe idea to make a functionnal guided missile list?

    Guilang can usually access any hackable target (thanks to marker state). To me they are the best hacker : high WIP, marker state/infiltration to reach most target (or place themselves midfield on a roof or inside a building where they can hack/spotlight any passing target (they spotlight one or two target this way per game), mine, MSV1 making them good midfield piece for SK hunting

    The minelayed repeater from the lu duan is a nice defensive asset in many mission (also : once placed near your TAG, it make you able to total control him with the dayoing if he end up possessed) and the Lu Duan itself is quite good at using his holo to place a repeater wherever you need it to be (like 19cm away from your opponent TAG)

    For other hackers :
    Daofei HD is a very well rounded offensive tool : specialist for objective, able to do a shitload of classified, able to rambo and even kill HI with is mimetism/multi rifle... (usually take him as lieutenant with a Phaesant KHD CoC)

    KHD ninja is good for second turn drop (killing an exposed piece, reaching an objective...)

    Phaesant KHD is an excellent CoC : being KHD make him a very safe CoC and he can move midfield turn 2/3 to hunt hacker, do objectives, do classified...

    I haven't tried the Hac Tao HD myself but based on experience of being on the receiving end of a swiss HD (which is very similar) I think there is a lot of potential here

    At the end, many of my opponents underestimated the potential of Vanilla YJ hacking... until they ended up with a possessed TAG (twice for the poor Gorgos) or an isolated HI right in the middle of nowhere

    I'm more in line with Sedrals approach. Both in number of hackers and profiles chosen. The exact profile chosen comes down to the mission played and if I had points left for the REM Racer/CG or just a Zhanshi.

    Although I don't agree that the CG is a bargain. Jazz' profile brings tears to your eyes if you compare them.

    Biggest problem with the Guilang Minelayers is their SWC costs and that they are no specialists. In general, I want my specialists in the midfield in a markerstate. If the Guilang are Hackers, they are vulnerable to enemy repeater nets (i.e. Morans) if I want to click buttons.
    If you think of i.e. Supplies, you come back to the good old Guilang FO + Kanren KHD. Both don't care too much about hacking, both can click that button quick and the Kanren can remove the Deployables before doing that.

    Of the WIP 14 Hackers, for me, the Daoying hacker is fantastic for the price. While it doesn't have the infiltration of a Guilang, it makes up for ARM & BTS.

    Of the WIP 13 hackers, I've been liking the Ye Mao in WB. BTS6, MSV, Super Jump is ok. The KHD version can also use cybermask.

    I like the Zhanying but really the 6th sense is only ok. If being hacked you already know it's going to be one of two things from a regular hacker and only one thing from a KHD.

    The RR is really good for the pts.

    Kanren is also really good I think. I just wish it was more than AVA1.

    Yeah, ISS actually have a really strong hacking game, as long as the mission is transmission matrix. Throw them free repeaters all over the table and tinbot-6 linked with Zhanying agents is a real party.

    I agree that guilangs are, in fact, our best hackers. Only issue I have is that as my go-to skirmishers I prefer to keep them unhackable to handle opponent's hackers and repeaters, so I'd rather use the minelayer profile (who's probably the single best skirmisher profile in the entire game, hands down).

    I have a hard time playing anything other than the daoying + hac tao combo as far as yu-jing's lieutenant dynamic is concerned, but the daofei lieutenant is still incredibly attractive and that might be a way to use him so I'll give it a try!

    edit: First draft with the daofei and pheasant. It looks great!
