We're a group that are just about to jump in to the game and are allowing everyone to play all of the characters without "unlocking" them first.
So now everyone is wondering; how do the characters play?
What are their strengths and weaknesses? What tropes do they play to etc?
Both the original gang and the expansion characters.

Thanks in advance for any input :)

Can take a look at the following sheet to get a summary/feeling of specialisation.
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/18_och1nbM-Nhl2Apq6kHfVcsAJmecBL3/view?usp=sharing

    As for a quick summary:
    * QUIANG GAO: Basic tank, soack damage and aggro. With equipement and specialisation can deal a huge load of damage, or provide defense and additional bonuses to the team mates.
    * CADIN FIRSTSTRIKE: Primary damage dealer with a huge mobility. As mobility is a must to reach places in time, can be a must if you remember that you can ALWAYS go through ennemy units and allies to push forth.
    * JAZZ: Hacker who provide supports and deals with Console. Often considered a must have for Defiance campagn as Console can take time to unlock without her. A slow burner can be pretty insane when you combine bunchload of program and her speciality to switch program on the go. Considered brocken due to the hability to stack programs and several hacking devices.
    * UMA: The gunslinger, can deal huge load of damage and manage several targets at once. Her mimestism gives her some defensive abilities.
    * RAHMAN ROUHANI: Don't take him without First Aid. He will improve tremenduously the survability of the team as well healp deal with consequence cards. With Rifles and Biotec Combat he can deals surprising set of damage.
    * TRISHA: The black sheep, her status as Lhost gives her lot of mobility/survivability but her two other specialities takes time to unlock their potential when loot does not provide as much benefit as some could exprect.

For Outcast, still learning how to play them:
    * RAOUL SPECTOR: Always focused he manage on his own both CC and support. Compared to Cadin he loose some mobility but gains supports specialities to debuff ennemies based on Taunt or help his team mate (He gets first aid!). Kind of a mixed bag between QUIANG GAO, CADIN and RAHMAN, but harder to play as you make constant choice between support, debuff, and CC. Go for his Versatile and won't die EVER!!!.
    * LEI GONG: Heavy shooting platform with mobility !! Once you get hime a decent Rifle he'll kill whatever needs to die and provide mobility and support through his smoke grenades.
    * UXIA MCNEILL: Trisha but with the punch of Uma. Her Special Unit characteristic gives her access to unique weapons and armor providing her with deadly damage without Line Of Sight... once you get enough credits.
    * FAT YUAN YUAN: Infinite grenades to deal damage out of line of sight with mobility to finish the foes in CC with Bud Spencer strikes. How cool is that!!
    * SHINOBU KITSUNE: Cadin but with the stealth capabilities of Uma. Like Uxia she gets access to Special Unit Equipment to add additionnal punch to your steath strikes and strike multiples times.
    * KATHERINE CHO: Last but not least Katherine gives you the upperhand against the ennemies by manipulating the Initiative deck and soacking the allies Aggro. Gives lot of flexibility by providing additionnal activation for allies or bringing Bodyguard with her. An interesting take on the Tank role as it's her bodyguard that takes the damage and bring additionnal firefpower. Have I mentionned that specialisation and Intell opens access to TAG Bodyguard??? oO

Can you mix and match characters across the expansions?

For example play Cho in the core campaign?

My Waze 2 everything delivery came in today, so I've got a lot of catch up to do.

Yes, though with Cho specifically she acts as the team's handler in the core campaign and so frequently briefs you in mission texts, so her being present there can be a bit awkward narratively.

But, gameplay-wise, yes, it's fine to take anyone.

And on top: who should stop you? Make it your game, mix and match!

I yeah I can run my game may way, it was really just a case of will it mess with the missions if I offer my fellow players a larger pool of characters to play with.

We where about to have our first game last week, but one of the player got ill. I hope we can have our firt game soon, but for now I'm starting to paint the chosen characters: Jaan Staar (I'll be using this one fellow Tohaa), Father Lucien Sforza, John Hawkwood and Quiang Gao.

Without any hacker I guess this will be a difficult campaign (everybody says that playing without hacker is difficult), so I guess one of us could down the line get a Hacker Device and try to be a support character.

John Hawklook looks like he is particularly useful... the ability to see the AI cards a turn ahead!

My 2 friends ar usually Nomads and Yu Jing, so I expect that might colour the choice of characters.

Remember that unless you specifically are a "hacker" (only Jazz and Valerya), you can only use Defensive hacking devices :)

We've only done mission one so far and we have Jazz on our team (besides Kitsune, Raoul and Uxia) and the problem you need the hacker for is the consoles from what we feel. Without a hacker handling them would just be too slow and you would get overwhelmed :)

New character gets early movement bonus and free actions so they might compensate.
Anyway hacker are often thought mandatory because, during their activation at the beginning of the campaign all they can do is focus and hack console.
With your team you will all have to interact with console between 2 enemy.
You'll have to learn faster too that sometime the mission is more important than the shooting of opponent who will come back anyway next turn. AND that you Can move through other unit with a 1mov penalty!

Well, we'll see how it goes if we manage to schedule the first game. So far that seems to be the hardest task XDDDD

Definitely Jazz or Gromoz are mandatory for the campaign.

I'm currently playing Jazz and I would think so too, but I imagine there might be an opening to grab a character with the "Specialist Operative"-skill tree instead, take "Refractoring" and buy a Defensive hacking device. It will be tougher, but I think it might be OK :)

There's a thread with spécialisation example and one of them is Trisha demolition (it seems she can replace hacker by blowing up doors)

I'm starting a campaign this saturday with the following:
    1. Qiang
    2. Jazz
    3. Trisha
    4. Kendrat
I'll post back with our thoughts, we should get through two missions? We'll see.

Trip report! We had a slight change of roster, I ended up swapping Jazz for Gromoz on a whim to see how she played.

Really enjoyed our start and first two missions, Gromoz felt very lacking in the first mission but I can see how she scales up rather alarmingly when you get some specialties and better equipment rolling.

Qiang: Tanky, can take everything thrown at him not coming from a hacker, then he gets brutalised. Absolutely obscene with the Missile Launchers.
Gromoz: Slow start, can see how she ramps up later in the campaign with Merc Access. I ended up grabbing a Blitzen after mission one just to give me some non-hacking teeth against hackable targets like the Gwailo, whose BTP is so high I struggled to even touch it.
Trisha: D-Charges are great fun after we sussed out how to use them, her interrupt action is very useful against things that can really get in your face like Taigha/Pitbulls.
Kendrat: Surprisingly off-tanky, her shotgun skills really sing after the first specialty where she started racking up some tasty damage. I think she will snowball quite nicely too!

I really wish there was a third hacker out of the character pool, it would feel a bit more freeing than just from Gromoz or Jazz and would go a long way - but what you have is what you got I suppose.

Has anyone here tied Kusanagi, Raoul or Lei Gong yet? I'm interested in giving them a go.

We made a game with Kusanagi and I must say her Versatile skills seems to be broken OP. The hole Party was nearly permanent focused. I am not sure if we made something wrong, but everytime she is active she can tap her versatile to focus all characters in range 0-5. And on top of that she murderd most enemies on her own with way to much dices ^^.
Lei Gong was okay, tanky and damage but not nearly as good as Kusanagi.
We also had Shinobu. I think she will shine on a higher level.
4th was Rahman. Having a doctor is nice, but I don't really see a point in his remote. Billie has a weapon to stun and can get upgrades as does Duchess, but Gaspar has nothing.

I need to read through Gaspars cards and check out Rahman, he seems cool and I like the idea of him at least?

Me and a friend are starting a two-man campaign alongside our main four-man one and we're taking:
    Kutsune
    Cho
    Jazz
    Kusanagi

So it's the anime girl day out, should be fun!

Sounds like a funny group. Please tell how Cho is working, especially since you also have a Hacker. I am not quite sure what she really can do.
