As it says on the tin, there's a 22 player event this weekend with Biotechvore, Highly Classified, and Capture and Protect. I decided that since Spiral was known for being able to synergistically include a diverse array of specialists :face_with_rolling_eyes: they'd be perfect since the classified deck would hardly be a factor at all during this event.

Here are the lists I plan on taking. Troopers are included in the list in the order to form what I consider to be logical fireteams where applicable. I don't think there's anything too skew here, just some good old play for the mission type list construction.

    All the classifieds:

Alright so all in all I did OK. I'd say worse than my normal standing, but then I purposely brought Spiral into an event where 16/30 OP came from completing classifieds.

    Highly Classified v JSA
The first round was Highly Classified on a very balanced table against a JSA player. We drew Net Undermine, Follow Up, HVT: Espionage, and HVT Kidnapping, my classified was Extreme Prejudice. I chose the list that gave me the most Veteran and HI options. My opponent won the roll and chose to go first.

I would have loved to play Biotechvore on this table simply because the table was a series of nearly balances small buildings deployed in nearly straight lines parallel to the deployment zones. I made my opponent deploy first and he proceeded to deploy an O'yoroi on his left flank, supported by an SMG ryuken9; his center was a link team consisting of BSG Kempei, MSV2 Kempei, Yuriko, and some Keisotsu filler; he deployed another SMG ryuken9 on his right flank, and eventually a second O'Yoroi.

Expecting Shinobu, I deployed the Taagma Sniper in a position on a rooftop where it could see both Ryuken and not much else without moving; his chaaksa buddies provided flamer overwatch for Neema, the Tricore, and the Bioengineer; the remaining Triad and the chaff deployed to provide cover for my HVT on my right flank.

Basically the opponent pushed forwards with his link team in the middle, using Yuriko to secure Net Undermine and Sabotage while moving in the shadows of buildings. He left the two TAGS in suppressive fire, but couldn't get the Ryukens into Suppressive Fire because of my MSV2 Taagma Sniper. He ultimately didn't have enough orders to get his link team back where he needed. Basically he didn't engage any of my models on his first turn.

From where the Taagma was deployed I was able to take shots at both Ryuken - and as would become par for the course in this tournament, he passed all his saves and was able to fail guts to move both out of LOF. From there the Taagma engaged his Oyoroi on my left flank who was standing between me and his HVT. He chose correctly and dropped suppressive fire - 24.25." Three orders later and the Tohaa biotechnical virus had melted the Japanese TAG. From there the Draal, acting as a solo piece, took away three members of his link, including the Chain of Command Kempie - putting my opponent into LOL going into 2.

In his second turn, as expected not much happens. He tries to use the TAG's orders to engage the Taagma sniper but is outranged, and retreats into cover. Shots from a Ryuken strip the Draal of her Symbioarmor.

In my second turn I need to score some points before I'm forced to kill his remaining TAG and put him into retreat. Neema moves up with her team and in a lopsided fight with a remaining keisotsu she manges to lose her Symbiomate and a wound while standing in cover... After killing said Keisotsu, and the remaining Ryuken on the left side of the board, Neema throws all my remaining orders into securing Net Undermine, HVT Kidnapping, and Follow Up. Then I spend my remaining orders standing what I can in the way of his O'Yoroi (who still has five orders but is on the wrong side of the board).

His last turn is spent running the OYoroi through combined sniper, light rocket, breaker rifle and pulzar fire to lay a flame template down on top of Neema and her fireteam - only the Bioengineer survives.

My final turn is a vain attempt to get Aalis Keesan all the way across the board, past his TAG and either complete HVT Kidnapping again, or HVT Espionage. Ultimately I couldn't get close enough, but the Bioengineer was close enough to sneak out a Secure HVT which I used to grab 2 points for my classified.

    Final Score: 8:3 for Spiral

    Biotechvore vs Invincible Army
The table was honestly fairly balanced again, there was a row of small buildings in each deployment zone, the center of the table had a courtyard and a tall office building. The most notible feature was the row of buildings joined by catwalks down one flank of the board. Whoever's Sniper controlled this was going to have a field day.

Honestly this one's a short write up. I made two mistakes right of the get go and they resulted in the first time I've been tabled playing a game of Infinity. First, after winning the LT roll I chose to take Deployment - I really don't know why. Second, after he deployed I chose to strip orders rather than command tokens. 12 orders was still more than enough to move his core link and supporting models forwards, being forced to spend 5 orders just moving his support out of the Biotechvore Zone would have been very beneficial.

The only things worth noting are that at one point both my Helots were able to drop templates on multiple members of his Core fireteam on the first turn. He stood his Sniper up as link leader and crawled the other members up behind him. My Helots actually managed to land 3 of 4 rocket templates, but the Sniper managed to KO them both, saving himself. Of the 9 saves he had to make? Failed 2, on separate Zuyong, and of course passed both Continuous Damage rolls. The other notable point was the Surda Symbiobeast who failed five unopposed dodge rolls (on 18's!).

Final Score: 10:0 for Invincible Army (just one of those games)

    Capture and Protect vs Druze
This game went almost perfectly according to plan. Almost.

The table was a jungle outpost with a good mix of terrain, including several Warsenal Comanche pieces, a bunch of scattered crates, rock formations, and areas with dense flora.

I won the LT roll and chose to take deployment. My opponent had owned Spiral before but didn't find them to his liking.

My opponent dropped scarface and cordelia right behind his beacon; deployed a typical Druze link team, consisting of a SMMR, HMG, KHD, panzerfaust, and clipper along my right flank, hidden behind a Comanche Barracks; supporting the link and TAG were Valeria Gromoz, a Pathfinder, a suspicious solo brawler, and ultimately his reserve model was a TR bot providing overwatch, right in the center of the table.

At this point I basically deployed everything I had in an overwatch position, making sure that when the TAG activated or the Druze fireteam came around the Barracks I would have multiple ARO's between the Helots, Sniper and Marksman Rifle. I deployed the three impersonators in such a way that he would need to spend 1-2 orders in order to gain LOF to any single model, before attempting his discover, whereas I would be within effective range within the span of a short skill. The Clipsos held in front of the Druze link, with the mine deployed such that he would need to risk at least one model to bypass the barracks, or spend another couple orders walking the long way around. Flamers and Pulzars covered the final approach to my beacon.

During my opponent's first turn he basically ran Scarface straight at me, bellowing and firing his MK12's. At the end of his turn, Scarface was a smoking ruin, but he'd taken out both Helots, the Taagma sniper and one of the Kuiitan Impersonators.

This left me with really ten effective orders, and it took every single one of them to kill the damned TR bot. The Grief operator shot from in cover and within 16", stacking the mods worked and managed to land three hits - oppenent bounced them all. Without suprise attack, this becomes a sketchier proposition, so I try from the otherside with the Kuiitan. Not my optimal range but manage to land 2 hits with no cover - opponent bounces both saves. Several orders later and I can't grab the beacon turn one, but the damned TR bot is finally dead and I'm in a good spot for turn 2.

Things get dicey here again as a Bashi shows up on my right flank and sweeps the Clipsos' mine. He then does some maneuvering to clear the Draal's lain mine before swinging around a large building on my right flank to engage and destroy the Kaurii Sentinel, the Kaeltar, and with his second last order he engaged my Kriigal LT who promptly crit the damned pirate's head right off (thankfully).

My second turn saw me shuffle my ARO screen, the clipsos revealed, deployed a second mine then dropped into suppressive fire. My Greif operator made a break from cover and sprinted towards my opponent's beacon, gunning Valeria down along the way at long range. With half an inch to spare, the Greif operator claims my opponent's beacon and manages to hold it just long enough for me to score before the brawler stands up and blows him to pieces.

In his final turn, my opponent has six order to move his Druze through a punishing close range ARO screen and two different Zero-G areas. If everything goes perfect he may be able to end his turn on my beacon. And things start off well for him - the fireteam activates and three team member's casually brush shrapnel from their shoulders as they walk through the mine burst. The link leader casually guns down the entrenched, suppressing Clipsos. From this point we determined that it wasn't going to be possible for his team to get onto my beacon so instead he just started trying to clear whatever orders he could while leaving a couple of ARO's looking at my remaining Kuiitan.

Into my final turn I had enough orders to have the Kuiitan re-enter impersonation state, walk past the one or two Druze left looking his way, and dodge himself over the corpse of his pall the greif operator and into possession of my opponent's beacon.

    Final score 5:0 for Spiral

Oof, that second match... Sounds like the rest of it went pretty well, though? From the way you phrased the first post I assumed you were going to get hosed by the Classified deck, but I guess that was a lesser issue in the face of a rocket-proof core fireteam!

If you had to play those matches again, are there any changes you would make to your lists?

I had made two tweaks to the Bio/Classified list - traded the Taagma hacker for the MSV2 sniper and the Rasail team for Aelis Keesan. Based on performance I think the list I took was fine. I actually enjoyed playing the highly classified list, even though I would never normally take units like the Bioengineer in a list for Spiral. I did put together a different list that included a Kiel Saan fireteam that I think would have been more useful, and lean, overall.

The challenge I faced in Biotechvore was myself. First, knowing I was up against invincible army I should have taken my CnP armylist, even if I didn't roll for confused deployment with them, the Kuiitan Imposters could wreak havoc on his heavy infantry with their E/maulers. Second, even with the list I chose I should have taken initiative. The table was virtually symmetrical and were I to have been able to use Spiral's great mobility to get out of the biotechvore zone unmolested, I would have been in a much better position to rely on Spiral's defense in depth ARO style, and I would have had the ability to capitalize on my irregular order battery to push out of the zone if required. Basically the first two tactical decisions I had to make, I made wrong.
