Hello, there was a discussion in my group over how the rules work in using impact template weapons. ------------ IMPACT TEMPLATE WEAPONS Requirements Impact Template Weapons require an Attack Roll, using BS, PH or the appropriate Attribute, to hit. It is obligatory to declare a valid Main Target, who will be the reference to place the Circular Template. The Template must be placed when declaring the Attack in order to determine which Troopers and Game Elements (Markers, Deployable weapons or Equipment...) will be affected by the Attack, as this may influence their possible ARO, or second Short Skill of their Order. ------------ What is the exact sequence for third bullet 'when declaring the attack'? For example, If you want to throw a smoke grenade on the ground, 1) Do you place template just to check after having declared what point will be the target, without knowing exactly how much ground will be covered, or 2) Can you place template to check how much target/ground will be covered to maximize the effect, when declaring attack, but before confirming exact target/center of impact of smoke? (assuming the trooper is going to throw a smoke grenade this short order anyway, but before confirming what point will be target) (Is it possible to check how much the template cover and declare to shoot it to other place?) the meaning of 'when declaring' and the sequence of placing template is the topic of our group discussion. Also, when you are shooting Direct template weaon(such as chain rifle), how exactly does this attack work? Do you declare who will be the main target first and then rotate template as you like to hit other targets/avoid friendlies? Thanks in advance!
IIRC this has already been clarified by @ijw but I can't find the exact thread at the moment. You pick the main target (aka trooper, or a point on the board for smoke) and THEN place the template. No moving it around once it's placed for maximum effect. This is notably different from a Direct Template weapon, which you CAN move around.
Clarification here: You pick the point you fire from during your movement and the target as normal for BS Attacks. Now you can fiddle around with the DTW to figure out the best way to place the template on the Attacker's base from the position you attack from so it's hitting the target. (As a side effect you can maximize secondary targets) What you can't do is check along your Movement path.
