    Howdy,

I was able to participate in a TTS event this holiday season, so I thought I'd share the results of my first ITS with Vanilla Haqq. There were 16 players, and the missions were Countermeasures, Looting and Sabotage, Mindwipe, and Panic Room. Here's the lists and rationales:

Group one is the typical Haqq Speed bumpery. I felt that my list would sink or swim based on how well I could manage opposing link teams, and Daylami are great for confounding them. The Ghulam NCO would provide coverage for specialists on any open maps, while Knauf and the Fasid were tasked with any fire support needs. I saw the Namurr and Nahab as my two primary "doers" in this list, as their mobility would be useful for late game pushes, understanding that neither are very survivable, and the Hunzakut exists to be the inevitable MVP.

I used this list for the first 3 missions.

I put this one together to deal with panic room, hoping that Al Djabel and the Tuareg would be able to stick the infiltration and confound my opponent, while the COC, NCO and Lt pieces could claim the armory. The rest was really just a variation on the first list.

    Mission 1. Countermeasures versus Kosmoflot.

His list was the typical Uxia with Duroc and Margot, the nasty Unknown Ranger core with Cadin Firestrike and a second HMG. Some loose support orders and Muls in his DZ.

Fortunately, I was able to set up with the Fasid HRL watching the territory that the link would need to occupy, and the rest of my group 1 took up the typical ablative defense to slow down ramboing. The "Flot" took first turn, and the initial objective flop was Sabotage, Extreme Prejudice, and In Extremis Recovery.

    Turn 1.

Uxia stuck her infiltration and shot up a Ghazi and the Namurr before being killed by the Ghulam Doc's shotgun.

Margot dropped and accidentally ate a Daylami's panzerfaust (lucky mistake for me), and the Ranger link lost a member and an inactive wardriver to the Fasid's HRL before wounding him, dropping him prone.

    Then Duroc hit.

Duroc killed the Ghulam Doc, TR bot, and Ghulam NCO before getting felled in ARO.

So, I got to start my first turn down 5 models, but fortunately he'd left material on the ground for me to use to get classifieds.

The Monstrucker repaired the Shihab and performed a coup de grace against Duroc before finally running to Uxia and tearing out her cube. The Nahab then landed and D charged an objective so that I was able to finish at +3, seriously "backfooting" the Kosmoflot.

    Turn 2

The ranger core went to work, killing both Daylami and attempting to finish the Fasid unsuccessfully. They maneuvered to center-table under cove of smoke, and demolished the Shihab and the final Ghazi, unsuccessfully attempting to complete the newly flipped "Identity Check" classified.

In my turn, Knauf dropped the unknown ranger, while the Hunzakut snuck up and surprised Cadin, killing him outright with her shotgun. She dropped a mine and retreated slightly, awaiting the remainder of the Varangians.

    Turn 3

The classified flop now included Mapping, Telemetry, and whichever one wants you base to base with a Null troop in their own DZ.

The Varangian dodged the Hunzakut's mine, smoked his way up, and engaged her in CC. After three orders, the Hunzakut had knifed him to death and bounced all of his attacks off of her armoured bomber jacket (phew). A tractor Mul moved up on the Nahab, and failed to stun him with its para cc weapon.

At this point, it was mop up. The hunzakut moved up and gunned down his engineer and a rogue Rocket, before attempting to complete mapping on his DZ, but got clipped by a sneaky chain rifle held by a back field Varangian that I didnt' realize existed (It was quite late, and I could easily still have claimed Mapping and even Telemetry on the way, but I was pretty tired and goofed the sequencing). The Nahab completed his objective, and it was all over.

    End Game

It ended 8-0 (8-1?) for me, and I felt lucky at some of the unforced errors that my opponent made. I think the theme of countermeasures needs to be "avoid leaving alpha strikers on the table." It's just too easy to scoop up classifieds off of dead bodies. The Hunzakut was a boss, and I really should have slowed down to let her give me the 10 OP that were within her capabilities. I was mortified by the damage that Duroc did against a prepared defense, but also very grateful that Margot got punked by a Daylami. All in all, an exciting game.

Game 2. Looting and Sabotage Versus Tak

I was lucky enough to draw an opponent I've faced at two different Rumble on Route 66s, so I knew I'd be in for a good fight.

His list included a pair of Irmandinhos, Vronin, an Antipode pack, and max AVA of scouts with D charges along with Pavel McManus and a Dog Soldier. Fortunately, he only managed to infiltrate a single scout

He took first turn, so I set up with the Fasid Guarding my AC 2, Knauf and a Daylami watching the approach, the Namurr covering it with a Spitfire in suppression, the TR bot watching another approach, and finally, the Monstrucker covering it with his chain rifle. My plan was to counter-attack with the Nahab and Namurr, hitting panoplies with the Hunzakut if needed.

    Turn 1

The Dog warrior sacrificed himself to clear the Fasid's mine and smoke his way through a central building, laying cover for the Scout. The Scout managed to sneak and slide his way up to the AC 2, tanking or dodging ever ARO that came his way. He planted a D charge, and I rolled 1,3,6.

    Not an auspicious start.

Then Mcmanus ran up, and managed to put two more wounds on the thing with his T2CCW before getting chain rifled. That's right, I failed 5/5 of the AC 2 saves. Hilarious.

Okey Dokey, one of my Daylami pulled a multi rifle out of a panoply, netting me a cool OP, and attempted to deal with some Scouts that were guarding the DZ. No luck there. The Namurr ran up to assist, but took a single Ojotnik wound before ending in total cover near midfield. There was very little other ability to maneuver my big hitters, so the remainder of my turn was spent shoring up for the invevitable Spetznaz AD (Yep, I can count orders) and getting the Fasid in position for turn 2.

    Turn 2

The antipodes raced through a building, scoring one death to from Knauf's sniper rifle, and getting another isolated by the Ghazi. The surviving dog leaped up to Knauf's perch, hoping to eviscerate him with Tesium claws, but Knauf coolly double tapped him in his stupid dog face with his heavy pistol (I love Knauf).

The Fasid walked to centre and nunked the remaining Scouts with HRL fire, allowing for a clear LZ on my left flank.

The Multi rifle Daylami tried to engage a back field Irmandinho, who successfully smoked himself, allowing the Nahab to walk on. The Nahab moved up, iced a suppression fire dozer, and attempted to plant a D charge with his last order while Voronin sniped a long range shotgun shot at him. We resolved the T2 Shotgun, which killed the Nahab, and then we rolled for the AC 2. 8,17,17....fffffuuuuuuuuuu

    Things were real dire now.

    Turn 3

The Spetznaz came down close to his DZ, shoring up against one of the decompression zones. The Tak remanants were huddling down, anticipating the coming storm.

The Ghazi ran up, killing a Kazak Doc, and dropping Vronin with a pistol shot as he got right into their DZ.

The Hunzakut judiciously spent a couple orders trying to kill the Spetznaz, but coulnd't cut his armour.

The Namurr advanced cautiously, completing the Net Undermine classified, and opening up on the final Irmandinho, whos +4 Armour would not let him die! With only an order left, she ran to the objective, forced to invite pistol fire and the Spetznaz's lone shotgun. She planted the D charge, and we again resolved her death before rolling the AC 2. 18,18,20.

    ffffuuuuuuuuuuu

    Results

Ugh. Stupid AC 2. I killed the crap out of my friend, with the game ending 240 to 60 (ish) for VP, but I just could not clear the critical AROs to hit that bloody AC2. Fortunately, I walked away with a final score of 7-3. Always keep your eyes on the prize, kids.

    Round 3- Mindwipe versus Corregidor

Well, the Submarine strat is still viable, right?

The Corregidor list brought McMurrough, a TR Bot and intruder deployed on a commanding vantage point, and an Alguacile core with that dreaded Vostok Missile bot and aMobile Brigada. Jazz and Billie, a pair of flash bots. Yet again, the other guy went first.

    Turn 1

McMurrough ran up and casually spec fired a grenade that killed my NCO Ghulam and Leila before tucking in to some of the sparse center field cover. He hacked my right hand console with Jazz, and found my AI was in the central server of my DZ, which was thankfully well guarded by the TR bot.

The Namurr and Ghazi advanced my left flank, peppering Mcmurrough and killing Jazz. The TR bot finished Mcmurrough. My right flank daylami expended two command tokens to move up kill Billy, the Nomad TR bot, and force the Intruder to reveal as a dodge. Knauf then ventilated the Intruder sniper, but I was left with insufficient orders to shore up my Namurr in suppression. The Ghulam Doc revived the NCO, and suppression fire covered the server.

    Turn 2

Here comes the Vostok. I had no idea how good this thing was. The Namurr failed 3 dodges, and 9 saves from the missile squad, who then posted up covering almost the entire battlefield. Not awesome.

The Ghazi on my left dropped a chain rifle on the Alguacile core, but he passed all armour saves and wasted the impetuous offender. He then obliterated the Daylami that had encroached on his back field, and moved an EVO bot closer to centre.

The Nahab landed on my right flank, hoping to kill the EVO that was buffing the Vostok, but spent two orders to get blinded by the flash bot instead. (super). Knauf died engaging the Vostok, and the Hunzakut tried to defend the center with suppression fire.

    Turn 3

The Brigada's link charged center, killing the Hunzakut easily and wrecking the TR bot with missiles. Then came the inevitable Hellcat, who whiffed his landing (Yes!) but walked on right behind the Nahab (NO!).

This was looking very tie-like, which would sink my little submarine.

At this point, we forgot that I couldn't re-activate a console, so we backed up a couple of orders (super sport of an opponent from my local meta). The Ghulam NCO fired to smoke grenades to the objective covered by the Alguaciles, and the Ghulam Doctor ran like mad get to the console, she whiffed once, but ultimately rolled for the server, which turned out to be the one closest the Nahab.

With 2 orders left, the Nahab move-moved, taking a single wound from the Hellcat. With his last order, he assaulted the target server, inflicting three wounds with his D-charge.

    Results

That game was a locked 1-1 draw until the last 3 orders. I got extremely lucky with rolling the only accessible server, and luckier still that the Nahab shook off his earlier ineptness to rush it. The game ended 10-1, but that did not reflect the reality of table by the end of turn 3. Phew, one round left to go.

Round 4. Panic Room Verus MRRF (Seriously, more frickin dogs?)

Well, the top table were both playing off of 3, 4tp majors, respectively. There was no way to win this thing, but I could still finish well.

The French list had Margot and Duroc, a big core of Loup and Moblots, and a smaller Haris with 2 loups and a Moblot. This was the only game where I took first turn, hoping to maximize all those infiltration rolls.

    Turn 1

    Infiltration rolls:
    Daylami pass
    Al Djabel fail
    Tuareg fail
    Hunzakut fail
    Farzan fail

    cool, cool, cool, cool, cool.

Okay, My remaining daylami shored up the DZ with help from the Lt and the Barid. Knauf tried to kill the over-watching Loup sniper, but ate a crit for his trouble. A single Ghazi, Ghulam NCO, and Djanzaban managed to post up in the armoury, but the the Djan's HMG pinged harmlessly of of the HMG Moblot sitting opposite. The remainder of my failed infiltrators scurried up to midfield and took up suppression fire in preparation for the inevitable Duroc attack.

And attack he did, landing in my DZ, he rushed right up to the back of the armoury, and forced the Djan to drop suppression and dodge a chain rifle. He ate a fortunate isolation, but only took a single wound. The Loup Haris advanced, killing Al Djabel and the Hunzakut, but not before the Hunzakut ARO grenaded both inactive Haris members.

    Turn 2.

The Djanzaban spent a few orders shooting out of the armoury to kill the advanced Moblot. The Ayaar shed his camouflage as a Lasiq, and advanced to mid field while the Ghazi in the armoury closed a door, allowing the Farzan to enter and assist securing the structure. The Ghulam NCO, figured "what the heck," and lobbed a spec fired grenade launcher at the metro-Loup link. He needed a 5 to hit, rolled a 3, and managed to kill 3 metros. (OH NOOOOOOOO).

Margot landed, and spend 3 orders working on the Ghazi, who managed to get smoke down, saving his life. The 112 doctor failed to revive any of the downed metros, sealing the link's fate. Margot attempted to return the spec fire favour with her own bombardment of the armoury, but she fortunately missed.

    Turn 3

The Mutt ran out and chain rifled Margot into the dirt, also trying for the Moblot without effect. The Farzan peeked the armoury door, dumping shotgun rounds into the link remnants, killing all but the Moblot before dropping a mine. The NCO Ghulam and Djan both set suppression fire, preparing for whatever surprises might be left. The Ayaar poked up, and managed to blow away one of the Biotechvore towers with his panzerfaust, dooming some loose Metros to die.a

Then came the hero Alguacile hacker, who kicked the armoury door, passed 4HMG armour rolls, shotgun armour rolls, tanked a mine, and survived the Frazan's knife on his charge into CC. He was quickly followed by the Metro LT, who died from all the shrapnel, but stabbed the Farzan to death in a fit of rage before dying.

At the end, all of the MRRF forces were dead.

    Results

This one ended 10-0 for me, but could have broken either way. My two big breaks were the Hunzakut's grenade ARO killing 2 Loups, and the NCO spec fire that pretty much sealed the French fate. The Djanzaban did a great job of tanking armour from inside the Panic Room, and most other elements went according to plan, notwithstanding the atrocious infiltration rolls.

My ranking would all depend on the top table's final game.

    Debrief

Well, my loss in round 2 kept me off of the top table, but I ultimately landed with 2nd place. It was interesting to see that only 2 of us had played Vanilla factions, but we'd finished 2nd and 4th. Go figure. The tourney first place was a guy playing Morats, who swept everything in every round. I wish I could have played him.

I liked both of my lists quite a bit. I think my defense on Looting and Sabotage could have been improved with something as simple as a Djanbazan doctor to suppress the objective, but it was ultimately the crazy AC 2 armour rolls that cost that game.

Strangely, I didn't really miss the Fiday. I know right? It's sacrilege, but I felt I was able to focus on the objectives fine without him.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to pair against the CHA army that was also playing in the tourney. It would have been hilarious to draw all 4 Ariadna sectorials.

Overall, first TTS tourney was pretty fun. I'm not sure when I'll play the next one. The "late night" nature of a spread out tourney was starting to wear on me a bit by the end, and I feel like my first and third rounds suffered from fatigue.

    Thanks for reading, all.

Thanks for the great write ups for Vanilla Haqq! Interesting point that you didn't get to play the overall winning sweeper, your lists may or may not have gone either way but we'll never know!

Surprised at seeing Knauf in both lists (I never really associated him in Haqq so I never picked up the model), do you think Haqq has an alternative native to the faction?

I find that I move between Knauf and the Lasiq sniper. I feel like Knauf's extra burst "should" (not a stats guy) help him out-shoot a sniper or missile core, but that Lasiq hits like an absolute truck when it connects. I'm very tempted to call them interchangeable.

**edit** Knauf is quite a bit better than the Lasiq at taking on a hard, full core shooter like a Kamau. For the Lasiq to even get an even(ish) shot, it would need to engage at 48"+ inches, and have the link down a member. Hardly ideal.

Thank you for the report! I love Vanilla Haqq and it is always good to see on the table and doing well in a tournament. We have so many tools that opponents cannot be sure of what they will be facing.

Nice, i usually dont read these but i loved seeing you play Haqq almost exactly as they are meant to be played. Even though it seemed like going second wasen't your first choice, i think haqq plays well into that.

Very cool seeing some Vanilla Haqq in N4, and seeing some neat stuff like N4 Ghazis, the Fasid and the Ayyar. Been having a lot of trouble building lists for Vanilla myself.

I’ve been using the Ayyar quite a bit. I wish he had just the tiniest bump, like 6-2 mov, or an AP rifle. He’s still great in those CQC situations.

I’d say my Ghazi performed well in every gMe, particularly the 4th where I used 1 jammer and 1 smoke grenadier.

For the Ayyar, how are you using him? What role did he have in your list? An objective taker? I am still trying to figure him out.

I’m finding he works well when he can land a surprise attack with his pistols. B3 viral with -9 to shoot back is no joke.

He’s good at holding areas where he’s not likely to be engaged at range.

I find that if he’s disguised as something lame, like a ghulam, then there’s a chance your opponent may leave some areas a little more exposed. He’s very good at capitalizing on those engagements. Disguising him appropriately is the hard part.

Generally, I’d say that missions with an armoury or zone scoring are where he shines brightest.

regarding ayyar ... actually seems like I overlooked him in N4. He would be quite nice in some mission types and you’re right about the surprise attack with viral pistols which I kind of forgot about.

of your two lists the second one is closer to something I would run. Appreciate the write ups , it gave me some food for thought . Really wanna try out the ayyar now.

    Thanks, @HotFreshTofu.

I liked list 2 more myself, and have been playing with Al Djabel quite a bit, of late.

Strangely, I felt much more “in control” of the three rounds in which I used list 1, despite it being a much less familiar group for me.

Maybe it’s more predictable in what it can deliver. I’m not sure.
