I honestly don't think I've even played any armoury based missions since Varuna came out so I've been having fun musing of ways to approach the great murder cube with the extra shooty sectorial. Being "gently persuaded" to leave the comforts of my deployment zone to enter an 8 by 8 box that's probably (and if not, soon to be) filled with angry Samurai, Greeks, Gorillas, etc., has had me questioning Varunas ideal breach and clear methods.
I feel our best brawlers for the job are Orcs and Patsy, but even for them it'll be rather tricky. Outside of meekly attempting to jammer them from outside or dismounting the montessa to bumrush in I'm uncertain of decent options for flushing out or holding the room. My main thoughts going into the mission are to simply try and prevent them from getting close to the room in the first place but despite best efforts there will always be a pesky Shikami or caliban that squeeks in.

Anyways I guess I just wanna hear some other's thoughts on approaching the mission with VIRD or tips on dealing with Armoury missions in general from people who've taken Varuna for them before.

I think there are a few ways to approach it. Patsy and shotgun ORCs aren't bad, the lone Montessa isn't terrible (but loses some value without smoke to hide him.) The Peacemaker is a great option just for hellish template death. Walking an Echo Bravo into your DZ, putting out parrots, and continuously reloading can also be great if you're trying to crack a really heavy opponent that hates E/M.

One of VIRD's best tactics though will always involve stopping an enemy from getting into the box. That's where the long-range strengths of VIRD really come into play.

I think that Panic room is one of the harter Missions for Varuna. The Montessa is a good Option, but he will have his Problems with other HIs with better CC oder CC specialists.
The Jammer Zulu Cobra could be good. Isolated enemys are not contriputing theire points to the count.
Patsy, a BSG Orc, HRL Kamau also should be a great Option to clear and hold the Room.
The Peacemaker with a BSG and his Bot can bring the pain. 3 templates from Different points.
I also think that the Croc man Minelayer can be a Problem for your opponent.
Even Helots with a LoS into the Room are able to deny it to your enemy.

There are really four questions which you need to be able to answer in order to manage Panic Room well.

1: How are you going to prevent your opponent getting into the room?

2: How are you going to get into the room?

3: How are you going to kill enemy units which make it into the room?

4: How are you going to keep your units in the room alive?

Varuna has good answers to 1 and 3, with excellent long and short range firepower and good access to quality template weapons which make eliminating enemy troopers straightforward. Obviously our strong core linked AROs are a strength here, as are the likes of Helots, Shotgun and Minelayer Croc Men, Shotgun Peacemakers etc.

Varuna has moderately good answers to 2, with some fast and tough units (Montesa), some tough options (ORCs and Patsy) and some solid marker units (Zulu Cobra and Croc Men). With these the key will be to ensure that enemy threats which they may struggle with (deployables for the markers, for example) can be cleared by cheap disposable units.

Varuna will struggle with 4, as it has few truly durable unit options. Markers are all fragile one-wound options, ORCs are very vulnerable to hacking and E/M and there's only going to be one Montesa. This can be mitigated somewhat with good use of long range AROs, presenting the opponent with other threats which have to be eliminated before they can close to engage our occupying units, but if the opponent can take these down, or bypass them, then Varuna is in for a hard fight to hold onto the panic room.

This is a mission which I would probably dedicate an entire list to accomplishing, even if that meant taking a less than optimal list for another mission.

    Perhaps something like this?

Since it's been a couple of months since we visited this topic, I'll add some things. @Lesh' was chatting a bit about Varuna's capabilities with guided, thanks to linkability on the Clipper and tools like the Croc's Deployable Repeaters. That's not a bad threat to hold over an opponent, if you can get a Repeater down in a threatening spot.

Im a big fan of linked guided bots in N4. And buying a clipper for ARO is a cheap cost entry that can be rezzed by the machinist in tag focused lists.

Personally, the only times I bring Missile Bots outside of Vanilla/Tohaa-related factions is when that missile bot can join a fireteam.

The SWC cost is the main off-putting factor, and at least having them slot into the backfield support Core ( Personally my favorite kind of Core to run nowadays. Slot conservation and all that. ) in place of one of the fillers/GL helps ease that 1.5 SWC cost in. And VIRD has a *lot* of cool stuff that has SWC costs attached. So best make sure it don't sting.

Only fringe case is factions with easily accessible +SWC Lieutenants.

Two thoughts I haven’t seen yet:

Zulu Cobra with the breaker combi is a solid piece to remove your opponent from the room. The khd can be good, it you can crack your opponent’s hacking to make way for a Haris with ORCs. Obviously, that’s dependent somewhat on your opponent.

I think the ORC tinbot is worth a look as well. And actually, could pair well with the Kamau hacker.

I think I prefer the FO for that work.

After all, any decent hacking defense is going to be too much for the KHD alone.

The Croc/Zulu FO can also set up targeted at Range to set up a Missile bot.
Nice utility to blast people with templates bouncing shots off unconscious models. And with Surprise Attack in the mix, not too terrible to get to work in a FTF either.

Now that we don't have to bring a Hacker to unlock REMs, I haven't played a Croc or ZC Hacker of any variety, always end up with the FO variants.
Gotta admit I haven't played too much Varuna. Other PanO Sectorials get to play more in synch with N4. Have been really enjoying the 2+ Orcs that sneak into a lot of Sectorial lists now and of course Vanilla.
