As the title says, please sell me on bringing basic Myrmis other than the Chain Rifle. I've yet to field any of them so it might be that my fears are unfounded, but whenever I try and make a list I just can't bring myself to spend my hard-earned points on bringing anything but the most basic loadout in support of the Heroes we need to form a link. I'll admit that I am somewhat exagerating, since I can see the role of a Spitfire in a link formed with Machaon or an Officer, maybe even Phoenix, but looking at the Combi, Shotgun and Hacker profiles I'm left wondering what I get for the extra 8-13 points.

The hacker especially is one that I look at with dread. I know that linked hackers is the "new meta" but I feel somewhat scared investing 29pts into a WIP 13 BTS 0 basic hacker, particularly when I can for similar points get Thamyris or Scylla, both of which bring pitchers to the table to make up for their lack of linking.

Well, it's a hacker with Stealth (not many of them remain), and within a link of 4 Enomotarchos, has Sixth Sense (inmunne to enemy Stealth, and to surprise attacks). Aside from that, it's as you say.

The problem is that the greek have not many hackers to begin with, so if you want to deploy Scylla for hacking duties (that is, get mileage from the Pitcher against enemy units), having a second or third hacker is a must so enemy hackers can't just walk inside Scylla's repeater and try to fry her (and if they survive without killing her, waiting for the greek's active turn while more hackers pile within her repeater network).

I would advise against placing the Myrm hacker within Phoenix's fireteam, though, to prevent mistakes on your part (like losing Phoenix to an enemy HMG attack from an ORC because you thought it was better to oblivion the dude).

When using repeaters, having access to Sixth Sense on your hacker to stop HI with Stealth is huge. Especially in N4.

The Spitfire Myrm is an excellent attacking piece.

Having the BS based weapon paired with mim(-6) is what drives the price up. And with us having to bring characters who has those, it's very hard to justify a combi or BSG Myrm in a link.

As solo units, combi Myrms are not bad at all. They provide smoke just like the normal chain profile, and can also act as a roadblock by going into cover and suppression for a -12 modifier to an opponent. All of that work for guy who is only 24pts. Still, not easy to work into a list. Especially since he doesn't have forward deployment.

I'll still praise the combi Myrm Officer lieutenant profile too. Amazing lieutenant for its price.

i truly like the combi myrmi, a guy with smoke, stealth, good in cc and with mimetism -6 for "only" 24 points looks great to me, they are basically one of my favourite units by far.

But as you said it is much better to just take the chain myrmi

when i start building an aleph list i always say to myself something like, cmon this is the time to take some combi myrmi! they are great!!
but.. when de list is finally done, only 1 or 2 chain mymirs remains :disappointed_relieved::disappointed_relieved::disappointed_relieved::disappointed_relieved:

I'm not sure I follow you here. Of everyone to try and fry through repeaters Scylla seems like a rather bad choice thanks to her 3 BTS and the stacked penalty of hacking through enemy repeaters and her ECM Hackers -3. Especially when she is able to hack back using Trinity herself.

And if my opponent has the ability to bring in multiple hackers into my repeater net without Scylla's own Trinity being a deterrent I feel like that opponent would have a relatively easy time using the same hackers to exploit the weakness I added to my Enomotarchos by adding a hackable unit.

Yeah, I defenitely see why they cost that much, and I can see the role they fill, it is just... They never have the opportunity to fill it. Chains are more effective as link fillers and about as good at being corner guards. I hadn't thought of suppressive fire, but it's not like I often have some spare 24pts just lying around when making an SP list.

Honestly, it's hard for any unit in the whole game to be as good a link filler as the 16pt Chain Rifle Myrm. They're hard to compare with, super defensive with Mim(-6) burst 2 smoke AROs to protect the expensive characters. But solo as corner guards and speedbumps, even with their Mimetism, because they force non-F2F rolls with their templates they will die. I've had opponents spend 5+ orders just trying to dislodge a suppressive Myrm unit standing guard over a console and eventually just giving up.

But yeah, I also have a hard time fitting in such a unit in my lists. Especially with a Ekdromos as an alternative possibility.

You want to be the most original guy around? It's 2020 but you still wanna be a hipster and not shut up about it? Then instead of giving your guys the partisan's weapon of choice, you can give them some actual firepower?

Think about it! You could duke it out with reverend moiras and think for a moment that the game is completely balanced!

Seriously now, I would pay 8 points for a combi mirmidon over the +7 for Ajax FD, but for the same cost I could also upgrade two SMG thorakitai to LRL, so nope.

When would I field one of those profiles?

Let's say you're in a 150p match and a myrmidon in suppresive fire can actually shut down a flank of the table. Then I guess it's OK.

Maybe the Spitfire profile? Could work, has worked, but I'd really pay the difference to field Phoenix first.

The Hacker? I prefer the Ekdromoi hacker: cheaper, slightly better at hacking and that would be the SP version of the midfield deployable repeater. There's a very, very niche case: team up with Hector and his tinbot.

So yeah, unless there is a strong incentive to play limited insertion I don't see any good reason for a myrm to be the optimal choice aside from the chain profile.

Boarding - has AP rounds and puts 2 templates rather than 1.
Hacker - linked hacker is good. Also cheapest way to get specialist into your myrm link.
Combi - exists so other profiles feel better about themselves. Boarding is always better. You can supress him I guess.

I run Machaon with a spitfire and two chain rifles a lot. The spitfire is burst 5. Things just die. He’s cheaper than the myrmidon officers and characters (because he’s only one wound) but is arguably the beat striker that myrmidons can bring.

Combi rifles are a solid discount striker that you can use without putting characters at risk. Remember that shooting outside of 16 inches means you’re probably hitting on 6s, but your opponent may be down to 1s or unable to shoot back with ODD, cover, and range.

The hacker is a decent specialist. She’s a little more vulnerable on the reactive turn than I’d like, but if you also have Scylla in your list, it can create a solid layer of hacking defense. She is a specialist though, which is nice. Typically I focus on officers, Machaon, and now, Eudoros for button pushing in myrmidon teams.

Yes, she can impose a -6 to enemy WIP and a BTS of 6 when hacked through her repeaters. What I meant is that if the enemy can park his own hackers inside those repeaters, she is more vulnerable (the most vulnerable would be Thamyris, though). The enemy is able to choose between try to hack her in her reactive (B1 Trinity, with WIP13), or attempt to bring her down with numbers on her active turn (by parking hackers inside her repeaters, for example in marker state).

I'm not trying to vote against her, but be aware of the drawbacks. And since she doesn't link, she shines even more in vanilla.

Well, the Myrmidon hacker has stealth, so unless the enemy hackers are inside a 4+ fireteam core, should not be able to ARO your hacker freely.

If you just filler because filler there are no better options than the chain Mrym.
However, the other Myrms primarily add utility and flexibility to the fireteam so it isn't just a hero and three idiots that can really only engage a target in a singular way which I have found greatly limits the effectiveness of the fireteam as a whole.

The spitfire Myrm is my go to point man in almost all of my lists there are few things as effective as him when it comes to shooting things off the table, and backed up machoan he can stick around for a long time (depending on the amount of shock.)

The BSG gives you 3 templates or a B3 AP shot to punch a hole in something, though admittedly this one is fairly rare as more often than not just ganking the target with the entire team under eclipse is just better. though if you are doing a pseudo Haris with Phoenix in the back field these guys are effective at watching his back.

Hacker, With the general change to the effectiveness of the standard HD and Oblivion being the best program in the game embedding one in the team is pretty much a no brainer. it gives you second specialist with a relevant type in the fireteam which is useful for snatching mission bonuses and due to this increasing order efficiency. Additionally having the fireteam which is your primary assault piece which will be roaming all over the table be able to complete a higher number of classifieds. both of these capabilities as you don't need to waste orders that could be spent on your assault piece by diverting resources from it to use a different hacker that is elsewhere out of position to get it to where you need it. For Combat the Hacker allows you to approach some targets more safely as you can brick that HI/Tag from around the corner before rushing it and snapping it in half on the next order, same goes for spotlighting something before having a shooter poke their head around the corner if you feel you need that extra +3. The myrm hacker is also a hacker with both stealth and sixth sense making a pain to take down both active and reactive and that is before you have Scylla throwing up fairy dust to give it firewall mods.
It is also a combi wielding Myrmidon, so it can cover range bands not covered by the rest of the team, as well as being able to beat someone senseless, and still packs a DTW.

My go to offensive team is Machoan, Chain myrm, Spitfire and hacker, and it has yet to fail me and I haven't really come across a more effective configuration yet.

Unfortunately Hacker does not appear to be a valid fairy dust target anymore.
Definitely plan to try this squad out though, tend to put a lot of eggs in the hero basket.

That sucks, but it does give me back 34 points in the list to spend on other stuff.

I want to expand on this and say you can include acmon so you have a single troop without stealth in the link. You can force your opponents hackers (non sixth sense) to dodge or reset instead of them hacking back.

Stealth is an optional, automatic skill, so you can just choose not to use it with another Myrmidon.

Plan B. When your link is shot up, and you need to reliably kill the enemy still, having a combi or shotgun on a survivor can make all the difference. I've pulled off miracles with a myrmidon firing over 16".

I like him better alongside the Spitfire too. Too often an NWI character will end up dying completely and the ability to doctor be wasted.
