    Hello everyone

This has already been discussed endlessly over the Infinity discord and some on the ALEPH subforum as well.

When N4 wave 2 just came out the Steel Phalanx fans were ecstatic about getting to form teams without the need of a character, opening a lot of new and interesting options for listbuilding. It was the single most interesting change seen in that sectorial.
It seems, however, that that wasn't intended and CB tried to hotfix it which ended rushed and has caused a whole slew of confusion for a lot of people. We would like some definitive answer to this.

The solution seems to have been to remove the fireteam rule from Myrmidons and Thorakitai, leaving only special fireteam rules.

However, there are many inconsistencies with this.

1: The sectorial chart now differs from Army, saying that Myrmidons and Thorakitai still can form Enomotarchos since it's from before this change. We are told to follow the sectorial chart if in doubt, but this change is newer and apparently intentional.

2: While it's apparently intentional that Enomotarchos is supposed to need characters, Dactyles can still form independent links. If an exception to a rule that only targets 3 units, it isn't very consistent at all.

3: While Myrmidons has all the special linkteam options written in their army profile, Thorakitai does not. Nesaie Alké says she can link on her own profile, but there is nothing to mirror that in the Thora profile.

4: Wildcards cannot start linkteams with Thorakitai and Myrmidons since the two doesn't have the Enomotarchos rule anymore and can only start special fireteams with specific characters.

5: If the character dies now, since the unit itself doesn't have the fireteam rule they will automatically fall apart.

Extra: Achilles v1 has duo in his Army profile but special in the sectorial chart even though only the v2 can form the special fireteam now. If the sectorial chart is holy, then he wouldn't be able to duo at all.

    ---

All in all, the change to allow more freely configuring your linkteams in SP was very positive and made for a lot more flexibility in our lists that might take us up from a c-tier army even though we can't get that vital 5-man link bonus. With the hotfix we are less flexible than ever, with Thrasymedes not being able to form link with Thorakitai alone and Hector needing another hero to link anything but Dactyles.

    Please redo this hotfix.

Myrmidons and Thorakitai are not meant to have the Fireteam: Enomotarchos, that special skill functions like the Haris skill and not like the Triad skill as far as forming Fireteams are concerned. That is to say, one or more members of the Fireteam needs to have the Enomotarchos skill in order to form this Fireteam, but not all members need it.

What's missing is the Fireteam notes in Army 7 on Thorakitai and Myrmidons that they are allowed to be part of an Enomotarchos, I think this has been bug reported, if it has not feel free to do so. Regardless of what Army says, though, refer to the chart for the correct Fireteam compositions.

    5. No, the team doesn't fall apart. The Fireteam requirements are what's required to form the fireteam, not maintain it. Please note that what you're describing is absent here: https://infinitythewiki.com/Fireteam_Cancellation

so is the tldr of all the changes to enomarchos is that it now works pretty close to identically as it did in n3?

I want it said that if what CB intends is for Myrmidon links to be Officer/Hero + Myrmis it would in my mind make more sense for Myrmi Officers to be able to form a Special Fireteam Enotomarchos with up to 3 Myrmidons and have the Heroes count as Officers, rather than the ass-backwards way that it works now that the key models needed to form the Fireteam are all "count as". This would be clearer and convey the actual intention of the rule better.

    EDIT:
It would also work well with Thorakitai where you have a special Fireteam for Nesaie who can form an Enotomarchos with 3 Thorakitai. Wildcard rules would still apply and mean that wildcards could replace either Nesaie or any of the Thorakitai.

But if you already have a Thorakitai linkteam with Nesaie Alke, can you still have another one? Or are we limited to a single Thora link now since there is only a single special fireteam they can be part of?

I don't see why it would, there is nothing that says that you can't form two of the same Special Fireteam, and when creating the second Fireteam the Wildcard takes the place of Nesaie, just like any Wildcard taking the place of a specific model in any other special fireteam.

It is explicit (and bolded) in the rules that you can have more than one Enomotarchos. As long as the fireteam qualifies the requirements on creation you can form it, and several Thorakitai teams still qualifies as long as each has a legal unit with the Enomotarchos skill in the Fireteam
    https://infinitythewiki.com/Types_of_Fireteam#FIRETEAM:_ENOMOTARCHOS

Have you considered that an Enomotarchos might want to have more than just one hero in it? That it is at the very least as difficult to write exceptions to a Wildcard rule when you've got several different configurations and that the Enomotarchos carriers also can form one without Myrmidons?

All these are good reasons. Still, i still feel the rule could have been written clearer. Also, i really loved the ideas of having a couple cheap backline Thora links without characters so i could be more free with bringing fun forward units like Penny and such in my SP lists. Just sounds more fun and fresh than classic SP. Just liked the idea of the extra flexibility for an otherwise rather static sectorial with every hero in a fireteam. While heroes have cool and updated new profiles, this brought something extra.

I should clarify that I did not intend for it to be like the "1 Asura + 2 Yadu" special, but like the "112s can be part of a Fireteam: Core of Frontoviks" or "Up to 2 Orc Troops can be part of a Fireteam: Core of Fusiliers", that is that there is no limit on the amount of Officers or Count as Officers. Likewise it does not require you to have basic Myrmidions either, just as little as you need to have 112s in a Frontovik Core or Orcs in a Fusilier. And how does this have an effect on the Wildcard rule?

So you guys are actually reasonably clear on how this type of fireteam works, you just wish it worked differently? Might be a bit much to demand to remove the thing that makes the sectorial special when the sectorial is being discontinued and getting a mercy update...

@Axelius Enomotarchos literally is a "X counts as Y" and just like Haris requires a unit with the Enomotarchos skill to be part of the team when the team is formed. The only thing missing is a information/reminder for Dactyls, Myrmidons and Thorakitai in Army 7

Well, there was a lengthy discussion on how it worked on the Discord, which is why i wanted a definite answer. I get it now, no longer confused at all. Yeah, i wish it was otherwise, but aside from the Thora army profile missing the text to mirror Nesaie Alke's special fireteam text like the Myrmidons have for their officer characters it seems more sane to me now.

I think it's a bit of a strange workaround that you have to take a special fireteam with a character and then replace the character itself to get a team led by one of our wildcards. Didn't quite catch that in the start, and might cause confusion and discussion when brought to a table if not specified somewhere.

I like that Dactyles can form a non-character link, but them being an exception to the general rule of how Enomotarchos functions will bring confusion, as the other two core units lack the basic Enomotarchos rule.

This is the last words of my little moment of salt over losing our new shiny ability to make non-character Thora and Myrm links. Thank you so very much for clarifying.

yeah, it'd be nice to be able to take a 'Kite link without a 20 point tax for a forced upgrade to a profile you don't want or need.

Essentially yes. What happened was when they first went live on army both the myrmidons and the Thorakitai had fireteam enomotarchos baked into their profile and with the chart saying they had FT: Eno it was assumed that the hero requirement was removed which opens up the faction a lot as a QoL change. Yesterday there was an update to army that removed it from the Myrmidons and Thorakitai, and they general way things are worded make it a somewhat unintuitive clusterfuck to navigate (then again so are all fireteams now), this update also rolled back what was perceived as a great change for the sectorial.
