Hello all, So what do you think about the change to Impetuous? Now, unless you're within reach, you don't have to beeline directly towards the nearest enemy. There's a lot more freedom which is nice. However, this also opens up for the opportunity to cheese. You may have to move your entire MOV value, but nothing stops you from zig-zagging to scuttle forward and stay within that full cover since you aren't forced to go by shortest possible route. I'm interested in hearing of opinions and ways of using this changed rule. It's definitely gotten units with it more versatile than they were before since it's almost a regular order now.
i think the clause about not doubling back is going to provide some practical limit on how much you can use the zig zag approach. but frankly in most cases that wont be necessary to keep your trooper safe given the flexibility in the new movement rule. to me, its worth it if we can stop discussing how to calculate shortest distances.
Do we know if the "towards enemy DZ" only applies during the Impetuous Phase or not? I was discussing it on FB and we couldn't work out whether it was limited to the Impetuous Phase or whether it was universal.
It’s supposed to be just during the Impetuous Phase, but the formatting got slightly messed up. Regarding direction etc, that’s one for @HellLois.
I also wonder, with the clause about doubling back, what if you've already reached the opponents deployment zone and are not within charging distance of an enemy model? Can you only take a move that takes you closer to the opponents table edge?
So, does that also mean that Impetuous Troopers never get cover during the Impetuous Phase? Because it's probably the Impetuous Phase trait that means all of those effects only apply during the Impetuous Phase?
If I'm reading it right, you effectively don't have to move your full MOV value. If I only want to move 2", I just zigzag at a shallow angle for part of my move to burn movement distance. The zigzag can happen at a very high frequency and low amplitude so that I effectively move straight forward 2".
All I know is that if I see someone across the table trying to say, "My amplitude and frequency of my movement allows me to only move X inches in Impetuous..." I would probably stop playing with them. I dealt with enough of that crap in Warmachine. In a game of Inches and Centimeters i'm not going to play the game at the millimeter level.
Simple enough solution to agree that they meant: Go towards the Enemy Deployment Zone without doubling back. but their hands tripped on the keyboard. I don't know about anyone else, but that phrase "doubling back from the ... starting position" doesn't feel natural compared to "doubling back towards the ... starting position".
It seems that even if "doubling back" was to mean "no movement towards your own deployment zone at all", shenanigans would still be allowed. "A" would be illegal, but "B" type of movement would be perfectly fine?
I have no issues with B so long as each diagonal line is a real measurement and not using mathematical probable (but immeasurable on tabletop scale) things (like saying i am exactly 4.001 inches from you so you cant engage me) only really advance when it would force you too. I mean if you are using an optional Imp Move to advance a half inch it feels like a waste of an optional move.
It's easy to do with flexible tape. Not necessarily, I may only want to get to total cover, stay behind a building and out of enemy LoF entirely, instead of going out in the open and provoking a ton or AROs.
i just envision the impetuous trooper making car sounds with his mouth as he runs back and forth up the field.
