I'm thinking about getting one of these sets. I already use AV paints so I don't need to be sold on using them. I'm more interested the painting guides they contain. Are these guides fairly substantial or are they simple one-page jobs like you get in the operation box booklets?
I own several and the paintung books. They seem to be far more detailed versions of the old book ones. Cant compare atm but if memory is correct pano got diuble the amount of pages then in the paintbook. Without skincolour guide. Which is fine. Defnitly more. But it is all about the minis and copyng studio pattern anyway with these sets for me.
A quick search led me to this So I'm not sure how much more there could be compared to the operation booklet (which are shorter versions of the AG master class books)
If painted the ag guide for emtallic paints vallejo had released previous and while some steps are short texts only it generally is possible to recreate what is showen. I didnt manage to but got close engough that i doubt its the instructions and more a case of tools, light and experience that made the difference. Buy them for the paints, the pattern guide, the mini. Your experiance with the instructions my vary.
Apparently the guide is something like 14 steps but stop right before skin (for which paints are not part of the set). Which is much more than most tutorial in the masterclass books. So it seems worth the read.
This! I own the sets for Nomads, Haqq, YuJing and Pano and the guides give you very raw idea on the steps how to apply the paints and achive the colour scheme. Nothing is said about inking/glazing/highlighting etc.
I recently used the Shasvastii paint set to paint up the Nox that came with it. I thought the guide was good. The Shasvastii guide has 18 steps, each step is only a few sentences so doesn't have room to go into detail. Expect things like 'apply several washes of red to get even coverage'. So it'll depend on your proficiency as a painter. I expect if you know how to thin your paint appropriately you should be fine. As I said, I thought the Shasvastii guide was good, and I really enjoyed following it. Proof of the pudding is in the eating, and I wrote a post about my experience for my blog here. I've got my eye on a Yu Jing one to try next.
I have purchased the O-12, PanO, and just ordered the Shasvastii one. I have found the guides incredibly helpful.
I’ve got the Shasvastii and Nomads one and I liked what I was able to achieve by following the guide. One thing to note though, on the Nomads one in particular, there’s no guide to painting the face/skin. It’s all just armour, clothing and guns.
My understanding is that guides cover only paint included in the set. As they are factions specific, they don't contain paint for skin. Makes sense from the provider's point of view but understandably frustrating from the painter's one.
