    Ok ladies and gentlemen.

I am attending the first New Zealand Sattelite tournament, on the 3rd of October, in Wellington.

This is a 5 round event consisting of:

    Unmasking
    Decapitation
    Supremacy
    Acquisition
    Supplies

Although the new ITS season will not have started (so it's Season 11) we WILL be playing N4 (and, yes, that's not a lot of time for us to adjust and prepare).

And, yes, we'll be playing Tactical Window, so it's 15 orders max (barring usual hilarity).

I'd long since committed to playing Varuna for the event, they are next up in my cycle through the PanOceanian sectorials and I always said I'd start building them once the Helots were available.

Sure, things will change with N4, but I need to start working on something!

So I turn to you, my friends.

How would you be building two lists, with a maximum of 15 orders, using Varuna, to accomplish this particular set of missions.

I'll post what I'm thinking below, maybe tomorrow? But I don't want to bias initial responses with my existing thinking. So let me know what you think would work!

And remember... this WILL be N4!

OMG you can have in-person tournaments?? The rest of us are dying of envy. I can barely remember in-person tournaments, sometimes I wonder if they were ever truly real.

The problem is I have no idea what points will look like come October. But for giggles, maybe run a dual tag Squalo Cutter if possible. Maybe bring an Orc link just to show who is boss.

Varuna is looking as if it will transistion towards using heavy troops a lot more frequently.
Can't really go wrong with a Cutter/Squalo Zapper, Orc Feuerbach and Kamau Sniper as core of the list.
A Cutter List could likely still stomach running 3 Helots in group 2.

Nothing is really certain at this point in terms of changes to Varuna's anchor pieces.
Zulu Cobra Jammers and Helots are going to be the main difference.

I have no idea what we will have in N4 for Varuna, but probably the changes will not be too many, so most of people will be waiting for the classic fireteam core "kamau" fireteam, so don't do that!!

As we can expect it will be cheaper "IP" and "TAG". Maybe you can use a classic list, but other more "surpresive", full of "crocmen", "zulus" and "helots"?

We don't know yet the cost of points nor the fireteams rules but, what we know, is the jammer nerf, the limited window mod and hackers being pumped.

With that in mid, this were my thoughts to draw a couple of drafts:
    - ZC jammer is no longer a must due to the nerfs.
    - 15 order pools make irregular helots way worse because I want as much orders as possible.
    - Jammers gone, helots gone = no more turtling, more proactive approach.
    - 2 to 3 units that can outgun AROs or shot their way to the objectives.
    - Basic hackers get better. ( AFAIK now hackers are also assault hackers )
    - Patsy can perform most of the cards on the deck.

Basic hard ARO core with Kamau Sniper + Fusilier ML to cover a lane/protect an objective.

Patsy + Kamau hmg + Kamau HD haris to run up a lane making objectives while gunning everyone down with 9 + 1 orders ( NCO ). Also, if the AHD gets merged with the HD, you have an extra tool against TAGs ( I foresee more use of this units ).

ZC Spitfire as solo piece in a 6 order pool. This fella can outgun lots of units, put him in poor protected lane as your last unit and bring despair to your foes.

Croc FO + Pathfinder as support to score objectives and fringe solo units.

Basic hard ARO with a single Kamau sniper to cover a lane.

Cutter Lt. in as your main attack piece with 8 + 2 regular orders ( Lt. + TA ).

ZC KHD to hunt enemy hackers + achieve objectives + fringe solo attack piece.

ZC Spitfire, same as stated before.

Machinist + Palbot + TECH-BEE to keep our big Lt. alive + achieve objectives. Also, machinists are a nice unit to keep in suppressive behind cover.

Well, I didn't help you in a single bit with your missions... But I hope this helps you a bit.

Now I'm still feeling pretty good about those lists in general, but I am a little more concerned about their ability to respond to the missions in question. Why?

    1: No strong Data Tracker
    2: Limited alpha striking capability

And I'm sure there are other weaknesses which I'm missing, so I'm still VERY open to feedback and suggestions.

For the 2nd list I would probably swap the Zulu for a Helot just to get some use from those orders

With Unmasking and Decapitation in there I'd give strong consideration to a Squalo HGL or at least a Fusilier LGL, and bring a Pathfinder or Sensor Zulu that isn't your LT. Rooftop Camo LTs are an absolute pain in the backside for Decap and some table layouts can make it really hard to get to Designated Target deployment positions, so the Speculative Fire is a must for at least Decap. The Sensor is so that you can break a roof LT out of Camo without having to Climb up there and eat a DTW. I'm not a Varuna player so I can't offer much more than that general mission advice, I'm afraid.

The list below is a mix of traditional and unorthodox. It was designed to take in account the known N4 hacking changes, but I am unsure of the how the orders should be broken down between groups:

    Varuna Immediate Reaction Division──────────────────────────────────────────────────GROUP 1[IMG] [IMG] [IMG]9
KAMAU Hacker (Hacking Device) Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0.5 | 28)

    FUSILIER Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 10)
FUSILIER Lieutenant Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 10)
    FUSILIER Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 10)
CLIPPER DRONBOT Smart Missile Launcher / Electric Pulse. (1.5 | 18)
    TRAUMA-DOC Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 14)
    BULLETEER Spitfire / Electric Pulse. (1 | 23)
ZULU-COBRA Hacker (Killer Hacking Device) Breaker Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 28)

    GROUP 2[IMG] [IMG] [IMG]4 [IMG]2
MACHINIST (Varuna Div.) (CH: Mimetism, Stealth, Aquatic Terrain) Combi Rifle, D-Charges / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 17)
MULEBOT Hacker (EVO Hacking Device) Electric Pulse. (0.5 | 25)
    PALBOT Electric Pulse. (0 | 3)
CROC MAN (Forward Observer, Deployable Repeater) Combi Rifle, Antipersonnel Mines / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 32)
CROC MAN (Forward Observer, Deployable Repeater) Combi Rifle, Antipersonnel Mines / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 32)
HELOT MILITIAMAN Submachine Gun, Light Rocket Launcher / Pistol, Knife. (0.5 | 9)
HELOT MILITIAMAN Submachine Gun, Light Rocket Launcher / Pistol, Knife. (0.5 | 9)

It could be good to have the Crocmen use a coordinated order to help create repeater nets for Spotlight! They and the clipper could give you options for getting difficult to reach LTs.

I really like your lists, guys.

I put here one I used to play whit Varuna, maybe it could bring you some ideas more :)

I think for what we know about N4 it will be not so "fun" as now, because if I'am not wront, the Crocmen couldn't deploy no more as camo marker instead TO marker, which is a hard problem on how the list works. I hope still in N4 this kind of list will be viable.

From what we know of code 1, no the Crocman will be a camo -6 marker

Yeah, I'm going to miss hiding Croc Men amongst my other Camo markers.

To help clarify my thinking I decided to break down the missions by scoring and requirements.

    Unmasking
    - Aggressive Data Tracker
    - Strong ARO game
    - Tough Data Tracker
    - Hackers
    - Reduced value for Infiltration and Forward Deployment over 4" (Exclusion Zone)

    Decapitation
    - Marker State Lt
    - Tough Lt
    - Cheap Strike Pieces
    - Strong ARO game
    - Aggressive Data Tracker

    Supremacy
    - Forward Deployment / Infiltration
    - Baggage
    - Hackers
    - Strong ARO game / Strike pieces
    - Classified Coverage

    Acquisition
    - Forward Deployment / Infiltration
    - Strong ARO game
    - Tough Data Tracker
    - Tough Liaison Officer
    - Hackers / Engineers
    - Classified Coverage

    Supplies
    - Forward Deployment / Infiltration
    - Strong ARO game
    - Doctors / Paramedics
    - Aggressive/fast Strike pieces

Don't you like Patsy at all? She's the a tought DT, achieves most of the cards in the deck, stealthy HI with movement a nice grenade, absurdly powerful when in suppressive fire, order efficient, very cheap...

    Indeed.

I am starting to wonder if this might not be a good option for the likes of Unmasking, Decapitation, Supremacy and Acquisition:

Looking at the pricecut for Orcs in C1 and linked DTWs being the main synergy for Nimbus, Patsy in some kind of Haris with a BSG and HMG is going to be much more of a staple in N4.

/edit: Doesn't need a BSG in her Link, a Croc (or maybe EB) will do nicely.

True, that makes including her all the more interesting ('though possibly her costing will shift which may alter things too).

In any case, for Supremacy, Acquisition and Supplies I was thinking something along these lines:

    Varuna Immediate Reaction Division
    ──────────────────────────────────────────────────

    GROUP 1[IMG] [IMG] [IMG]10
FUSILIER Lieutenant Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 10)

How big's the event? If VP are unlikely to come up as a tiebreaker, I'd probably just make those Mules into Fugazi. I worry a lot about having enough boots on the table to cover board edges and stop those casual incursions.

We spoke a bit via PM, but the more I build lists for N4, the more I realize how little we know. In the back of my mind, I'm thinking that I never want to leave home without peacemakers, ever. I think they're just going to be a highly reliable staple for defense and attack, and being able to choose between active-turn BS or direct template via that heavy shotgun is really nice.

I'm also, personally, drawing the line with two Orders starting off the table, but not 3. So two Crocs, or a Croc plus an EB. I need to break old habits with Airborne units, because I always wanted an AD unit to start with at least 5 Regular Orders available to use. Anything less feels like a waste of resources, but it's also very hard to limit your Primary Combat Group to 8-9 Orders to start (or 6-7 Orders on Turn 1.)

I'm concerned too about armor cracking. In the current environment, I can't rely on Kamau MSV2 on Turn 1, because my opponents are too practiced at neutralizing it. That same philosophy will translate into N4, but the Kamau will be tackling much tougher attackers, and won't be able to rely on infinite-use jammer or Helots to fill the gaps. I'm really wanting a Fuerbach, and potentially two Hacking Devices as AROs if a big Hackable TAG or Su Jian gets close. I'm thinking a lot about that ORC Fuerbach, and whether or not Stun Ammo will remain in the game as an effective way of neutralizing a hard target for a turn.

I am also thinking about Baggage to assist in Supremacy, and to reload all those Disposable weapons.

When I pull out the forward elements and replace them with heavy weapon options I end up with a list that doesn’t seem very effective for Supremacy or Supplies.

Not that I disagree with the points you are making, and I certainly appreciate the advice.

You know VIRD way beyond what I do, certainly!
