I think I'd like to try out this style, I've got a few youtube channels to look at but has anyone see any Infinity models painted in this style? Links and or pictures please
Here's one example of cel shaded Shasvastii on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/InfinityTheGame/comments/g6pi1j/shasvastii_cel_shading_style/
On the @marcchee instagram, there are plenty of pictures of Infinity miniatures, too. With various comic/cartoon styles. He's also the one who made this kind of comic strip with Orks. https://www.instagram.com/marcchee/?hl=fr If you have not Insta: https://gramho.com/profile/marcchee/203469610 Asia has launched a whole movement of painting Gunpla in cell shading, and by example, on the korean channel Thestory 더스토리, you can quickly see how it works (it could be easier to test on a TAG ^^). For the miniatures, the Epic Duck Studios channel has produced plenty tutos. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcmPdmhJV33vdRq89CMS5kw
Yeah I started following epic duck, and I gotta say cell shading looks so good I'm surprised more people dont do it
Thanks for sharing. The Korean guys painting style is amazing. I think it's usually very difficult to get the shadows and light source from different angles right. Seeing it in 360 degree was very enlightening. Might have to try that soon.
What companies sell good 3 color sets for main color, shadow and highlights so I don't have to mix for those
Any brand should work if the range is big. For example, Vallejo had some lists in old PDFs, and someone collected these pictures with more cases (the small numbers are the place in the paint rack, IIRC, as color codes are things like 70.950). But if you mean prepacked groups, from memory, at least Wargames Foundry, Coat D'Arms (originally an artist selection, original site seems down, but the brand sells the packs) and Reaper.
As @Mob of Blondes said, any brand should have them. I know Vallejo include a summary in their game color and game air ranges catalogs. Other brands may have similar references.
Reaper sells triad Skin tone sets that cover the various shades our bodies are can be colored in. Agreed. I'd look into each paint company's ranges and see what they have for sale.
Yeah, I can recommend Reaper Master Series - I use them and their very nice. I really like their matt finish. I usually mix different colors and don't rely purely on the triads, but their good and definitely could help some fresh modellers :) PozdRawiam / Greetings
So got some questions. Cel shading, or comic shading IMO seems like it's easier to grasp and make look pretty decent as long as you have a steady enough hand and patience for the tediousness. But, I've been considering how to make things look really good in that style. I know I'm a ways off from beginning this endeavor but I'm certain it will look amazing once started. would you say a good way to make a highlight from a light source would be to mix the color of the light with the color of the surface and white paint to create a highlight in the cel shading? Obviously once I get started painting again, I'll expiriment on some primer painted paper to get a feel for what it looks like but I'm wondering if you have experience do highlights like that from light sources that aren't white...
@wuji - I've never tried a cel shading, I definitely prefer more "realistic" painting and was only commenting on the Reaper paints. And about OSL - I really didn't use it in my miniatures, yet I think your idea is good. The center of the light should be white, then mixing with the color of the light itself and gradually with the color of the surface. Here's a nice tutorial: https://www.lightminiatures.com/tutorial-object-source-lighting-osl-and-other-lighting-effects/ I also remember @maru discussing this topic here: https://forum.corvusbelli.com/threads/color-palette-c-c.36568/page-4#post-348383 Hope it helps :) PozdRawiam / Greetings
One of the things about cel shading in art is that very often the highlights are just as saturated as the midtones, and mixing white will desaturate a paint color. Speculars (the little bright spots on shiny things) can be white or mixed with white. On the other hand, a lot of cel shaded animation is all either midtones or shadows, with highlighting reserved for things that are shiny enough to have speculars in the first place. So it might work to paint everything the shadow color over a neutral or blue-gray prime, then paint the “midtone” over all the areas that aren’t shadow, and then mix the midtone with white and use extremely sparingly for catchlights and speculars on shiny parts. I think I might try this out on a spare Orc or something to see if I can make it work.
I just saw something recently about the 60/30/10 rule. Not sure if it meant shadow/mid/highlight or midtone/shadow/highlight. This is for percentage of the surface is what. Even if it was meant the other way. I think I will go with 60% as the midtone because I want a really saturated color so they can stand out on the table most. I'll use the black ink first to differentiate colors and physical elements of the model. Then I'll decide how much black shadow I'd like to cast, in all likelihood I'll just apply black shadow to 10% or less of the surface and then in the end go in and some minor white highlights and black dings and dents for texture and scratches. In my mind, it looks amazing and I'm amped but it's been a while since I've painted and I don't want to buy the models just yet till N4 drops. Really hoping i'm not disappointed. I wanted to get back into the game but this time I want to be sure I'm playing the right force. I'm aiming JSA because thematically I'll always get to field at least one NInja or Samurai and get them into CC which is the end all be all for me..
Hum ?? somone called me ?? or my nose is just eaching becouse of mask ? So Cell Shading and osl ? Wellcome in anime land - most of anime is made cell shaded - so you may just rip stright from it there is the example of same thing shaded in 2 ways if you are adding osl to it - it go same like with soft shading - no shortcuts just lack of blends - all reflections must be on spot or osl will not work if you look at my topic yuo will find there an Star lord with osl - it is almost cell shaded mini - it would be easy to turn it to such The thing with Cell shading is - it is not easer way it is as hard to do as normaly painted mini - as it must be damn clean and it is hard on this scale and light shading must be near perfect or you end with effect of low cost hentai from 80s with random colours instade of high end Gundams or Macross effect for osl reference check Prince of Persia 2008 and for mega flare effect for other style Call of Juarez Gunslinger and Dragon Ball Funkers Z - just rip from this games collor paletes for shading - save a lot of time - and if yuy need help just ask :)
Somewhere here I saw someone had posted the various paint schemes for JSA Domaru from the uprising book, does anyone know where that is? Nevermind found it: https://forum.corvusbelli.com/threads/what-colour-scheme-to-go-for.20071/
