Greetings totally loyal and law abiding citizens!

In recent days I stumbled upon the X-com spin-off: chimera squad (swat team made up by named characters human & alien alike) and it reminded me of dear old Section9's description of Wu-Mings. This nostalgia combined with the beautiful minis and my love for everything Heavy Infantry got me into intense list-theorising, but I couldn't get an effective ISS list based around a wu-ming core.

So I turn to you for some advice, tips or anecdotes about Wu-mings and ISS, because they seem to be my candidate for 2nd faction after Varuna.

*Disclaimer: I know it's me not my list and tailor to the mission packs so we can skip those rounds :) *

The list I thought up so far. It has a couple specailists, msv2, smoke, orders and even a drop troop, but somehow doesn't feel... right.

    @Crusader

A cursory glance at your list, I would suggest following improvements:

It doesn't make sense to use the Sensor Zhanying, without the Madtraps and as such you can drop the Boarding Shotgun Tinbot, in order to get the SMG+Chainrifle model, which is the best CQC unit the Wu Ming has to offer. This also free's up space for extra Kuang Shi's and orders

Alternatively, if you're up to, you can make the following:

    GROUP 1[IMG] [IMG] [IMG]8 [IMG]1

CHAĪYÌ Yaókòng Flash Pulse, Sniffer / Electric Pulse. (0 | 8)
CELESTIAL GUARD Lieutenant Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 13)
    DAKINI Tacbot HMG / Electric Pulse. (1 | 21)
    WARCOR (360º Visor) Flash Pulse / Stun Pistol, Knife. (0 | 3)

    YUDBOT Electric Pulse. (0 | 3)

Which gives you the much needed Sophotech, to keep your Wu Ming healthy, WIP15 matters a lot when your dudes do not have Cubes and you can force the opponent to deal strip orders from either the link or the Rui Shi. If you go first, it would be wise to start with the Kuang Shi linked in order to get reliable smoke and avoid putting your Wu Ming at risk for when the Zhanying puts up Supportware.

The extra Kuang Shi's in both lists suggested, also help mitigate the biggest issue ISS have, which is a very weak ARO, so every chain rifle in a corner helps a lot.

Thank you for the fast reply!

The 2nd list haven't got copied so it is the same as your first :grinning:.

Couple of questions about the suggestions:
    1. How will the kuang shis help with corner defense when they run foward by being impetous? Or I'm just supposed to alternate the Fire Team between them and wu mings (because I won't use Command Points for doctor re-roll that's for sure)?
    2. Chainrifle is really great addition but wouldn't that make them vulnerable to hacking? (No stealth and only BTS3 make me worried a bit)

Place them where 1 skill of Impetuous movement (4 inches) will not expose them. You can often get 2 turns of hiding out of a good placement, even. Doing this is a skill, you learn it quickly with ISS.

Oppose the hack directly when you can: B3 boarding shotty vs. most hackers works out better for the Wu Ming. When you can't a Tinbot is indeed handy though, which is why I like Zewrath's second list better (plus I love aggressive hacking, even with basic HDs).

Having the Sophotect and Rui SHi in a second group is also better IMO because it really reinforces your Wu Ming rather than sapping orders from them.

Yeah, I noticed and made the edit, lol.

    1) I didn't give much context but what I meant is that you place them in the corner to prevent/slow down enemy attack pieces in cases you have 2nd turn, in which case the Kuang Shi's are easy to control as (usually) you get to counter-deploy and they haven't moved yet. As for Command Tokens, I usually save those for either Rui Shi re-roll repairs, convert Warcor Irregular or move a trooper.

    2) Not from my experience. May be a meta thing, but either I play against KHD's, which doesn't do you any harm, or you deal with normal hacking devices, which usually isn't that big of a deal in most games, as your primary guy tends to be hanging back a bit and dish out pain with the HMG. Alternatively, keep the 4 Wu Ming at maximum distance from your Zhanying, make him take point and shoot the Repeater/Hacker. This is usually very doable, as your Wu Ming can be up to 16 inches away from the hacker, due to 8 inches of link team coherency and the 8 inches from the edge of the Hacking Area.

Oh now I get the kuang shi plan, thanks for the clarification. As for the wu mings: nomads and ariadna are the most popular factions in my area so it seemed natural to get tinbot and sensor in the same link, but seeing your (true) 2nd list and your reasoning behind it seems more interesting out of the two.

Not that it matters now, but I believe the Zhanying hacker was the first to be able to benefit from being in a fire team with a Tinbot B. It's still a good option when going up against hacking armies. Then switch it out for madtraps when not against hackers.

Zhanying and Mobile Brigada (they were the only HI hacker who stayed normal HD and didn't change to assault HD) were the first two hackers with tinbot, a really nice combo.

Hacker/tinbot combo makes even a normal HD pretty durable against KHDs etc. The utility of a linked normal HD that isn't a vulnerability for the fireteam is pretty sweet. Really brings that "toolkit" feel to your nasty linked-up striketeam.

Most success I've had with my wu-ming was playing something like this:

Extremely volatile (as you'd expect of any list using all 8 kuang-shis for orders), but packs one hell of a punch.

Looks brutal, altough a tiny bit too spammy for my taste. But it could be useful against those camo spamming Ariadna jerks! >:)

How do you go about using that link? Most of those weapons are short range. Do you put them on the enemies table half?

@Sedral I like thart list, simple pure whoomph as ISS does well.

Given new crit mechanics though, it seems like adding a combi/Nimbus lgl might be worth losing one order from each group. Brute force attacks with HMGs from HI are going to be better than ever, plus you gain some well-armored middle-range shooting. YMMV though. I might also consider the combi/mines profile to cover flanks, cover objectives against TO skirmishers, etc., plus a useful Warcor.

@Azuset You just kill everything with your Wu-ming HMG and rui-shi, the chain rifle dudes are corner guards and cheap filler. The idea essentially is that you have to all-in and punch your opponent so hard he can't get back-up on his feets, or at least not counter-attack effectively. If he isn't dead at the end of your first turn, he probably should by the end of the second one. If not, you've probably lost.

@Savnock To be fair last time I played this list was about... 2 years ago? I don't think I'd built it the same way this days, at least I'd definitely try to fit the zhanying mad traps in there, and a lone CG hacker if possible. The grenade launcher one could make the cut as well. Wu-ming have such good profiles, but the idea with this list was just to spam orders like crazy so choices had to be made.

I am not a huge fan of the MadTraps Zhanying just because my opponents are pretty adept at getting rid of perimeter weapons. For the expense I'd rather have the hacker, the FO, or take the boarding shotty to save for more orders.

But man o man do I love the Sensor-linked-LGL combo. Wipes some grins off some faces for sure. I've been traumatized by TO specialists hiding next to objectives frequently enough to have it become a core tool. :)

I love MadTraps Zhanying because of those sweet nimbus grenades. Putting those down on top of your linked HMG makes FtF rolls against MSRs and MLs so much safer. Haven't tried it with Wu Mings yet but it works wonders with Hsien Haris.
