Well, its a small island with a small genepool. After Brexit and other stuff nothing on that island surprises me anymore.
In local possible Covidiocy News, about a dozen police cars swooped on the other side of town and caused a stir on the very bored local Facebook page, because of what turned out to be a very drunk possible crim of some sort who wound up lifted by the rozzers. Literally, as in one on each arm and one on each leg. He was drunk enough to sing "I believe I can fly", why do you ask.
One of my old neighbours (from when I lived with my folks) ordered his shopping online, with mixed results. Someone, somewhere, must have misread and rather than the 1kg bag of potatoes he ordered, he got 1. 1 potato. I could imagine holding it up as the delivery guy drops off the rest of the crates and saying, "Well, thank god you brought this!"
Packers for online shopping have some very strange logic for picking replacement items, so it's not too unlikely they have reading issues
I worked in warehousing for a looooong time. If there's one thing I learned, it's that pickers quite often don't read the "unit" column. Or the description. When I worked in State govt. stores (we supplied all the state-run stuff - schools, hospitals, prisons, agencies, etc) we'd have places order things like tools for shop class, etc. Drill bits, for example, came as a "unit" in a pack of 10. So if they ordered 3 "units" of x sized bits, they were expecting 3 packs of 10 bits, not 3 lone bits. This also affected stock levels. The system would show we were down "3" units, but the physical stock was down only part of 1 unit, which as a broken unit couldn't be sold. So after I fixed that problem, we would be down 4 units (minimum). So then I had to do go through the shelf stock for that product, find broken units, consolidate them to make full units, and do stock adjustments (in my boss' words: "lose the leftovers"). When it came to drillbits, it kept my hobby in sub-1mm bits for a couple of decades.
Had a great social faux pas from the neighbours yesterday. The mother was out talking with one of her pals through the garden gate and after a few minutes one of her kids emerges from the house, shouting "Let me know when you're coming back in - I can't stand her!"
Now schools have moved to EdBuy, a centralised catalogue system consolidating many suppliers. The pickers STILL don't read the orders, but now they are multiple different suppliers for a single order, potentially. Now my orders get multiple mispicks and the different items arrive weeks apart.
Over here, the government stores were run by a private company by tender. The govt ran the ordering portal ("Qstores") side of things, we (UPS) handled stock and shipping. All was going well. We were 3 years into a 5 year contract, when the govt sold off the business to our competition. The company got their contract paid out (involuntary termination of contract no fault) plus building rental and floor and shelf stock (5+ million dollars' worth). We got pro-rata redundancy payouts. Again. Back then, the state-run organisations HAD to either get stuff through us ("Qstores") or our competition - but then they sold Qstores TO the competition - and the anti-monopoly laws kicked in - meaning that after the sell off, their "captive" audience was no longer restricted to just them, so the competition also lost a looooooot of money on the deal.
Scottish Football is to be reorganised at lower levels in the west to form a new set of leagues as part of a Pyramid system similar to the English model, putting the new league called the West of Scotland league at tier six, made of amatuer (junior level) clubs. That's not the WTF bit. There were 68 applications. 67 were accepted. Sucks to be the only one declined eh? Also, 68... 67...
Wasn't aware of that - I've been out of the workforce for 14 years now. Carer in one capacity or another since.
Our local supermarket has set up webcams so we can check the queue before we leave the house and now I want to know why everyone isn't doing it!
Well, our national borders have now been closed to any non-essential travel until September 1st, time to request a Gen Con refund I suppose :(
