The article says he's returning to Harlon's World to search for Quellchrist Falconer, so it sounds more like they're drawing more from the third book than the second. Though I wouldn't be surprised if it's mostly original.

I'll watch it, but I don't have high hopes. The original book was much better than the series and the following books weren't quite as good as Altered Carbon. If this is mostly original, I kind of feel it has the potential to be as bad as when GoT had no story to follow.

Well, that season was a confusing mix-match of books 2 and 3.

I understand that some of it had to be done because of the changes they'd made for Kovacs in season 1

Making the Envoys out to be terrorists, instead of the armoured boot-heel of the UN Protectorate. Making Quellcrist Falconer his love interest instead of Sarah (when Falconer died long before Kovacs was born). Making Rei his sister instead of one of the other surviving Envoys (of Inennin's viral strike). Hell, killing ALL the envoys on Harlan's world, not a world far from there with a different war going on where half a dozen of them survived. Removing Trepp and subsuming that role into Rei.

But tossing out large chunks of books 2 and 3 to make way for them made zero sense.
Dig 301 and a few mentions of Sanction (the planet where the action takes place in book 2) and then transplanting all of that to Harlan's world with a manufactured civil war featuring Joshua Kemp.
Removing the entire clean-up crews from the areas where the WAR did happen on Harlan's world (they released AI mechanical weapons (karakuri). Thus removing one of the links to their eventual understanding of the way the Angels worked.
Putting the datacoils of one of those decom crews onto Trepp, just to finally use the character (while merging her with one of the Decoms - but then separating the "possessed by the disembodied soul" of Quell into actual Quell and then making her possessed by an ancient "martian" Elder (who were all very much looooong dead before humanity took to the stars.

The AI hotel "hendrix" / "Poe" also has no part in book 2. Carrera is a merc troop leader, not a new sleeve for an old enemy (made up for s1 on account of them swapping the envoys from "UN protectorate" to the other side) that has protectorate backing, he's NOT protectorate. He IS a psycho, though. [/spoilers]

I am going to have to read the books for sure, now. I am only halfway into season 2, but it feels...uneven. Wonky. Contrived. I am enjoying the action and the acting, but definitely don't care for the plot. It doesn't feel half as tight as season 1.

Most of book 2 isn't in season 2. So that'll confuse you.
Book 2 is set on Sanction IV (another of the settled worlds), book 3 is set on Harlan's world.
The civil war and Carrera's Wedge are book2, but not UN protectorate forces. In the book, they are a merc outfit, with protectorate backing, led by a psycho who is NOT just a new sleeve for an old foe.
They got a few little details matching but it's mostly "throw enough crap at the wall and some sticks" method.

I didn't make it 10 minutes into S2E1. The books weren't perfect, but this is an abomination compared to them and I cannot separate the two enough to enjoy season 2. Even season 1 was difficult to reconcile, but I did watch the whole series.

Tried watching the Resleeved anime, but the story and dialogue was so bad that I turned it off after watching most of it. Even the action sequences were so contrived I couldn't enjoy them.

I wonder how Richard K. Morgan feels about these adaptations? I hope he's at least laughing in the bank, rather than crying into his coffee.

Altered Carbon had a futuristic neo-noir Chinatown feel to me, it's what I liked most about it. The Netflix series feel more like young adult sci-fi with some nudity to be edgy.

RKM has been paid "options" fees three times since the books were written. I''d think he's quite happy with the deal.

Since Morgan hasn't talked bad about the series and was even happy with the showrunners take on Season 1 I'm gonna guess he's just cashing those fat checks and smiling about it. Some creatives are hardcore control freaks while others are just happy enough to make some cash and keep on creating.

His intro in the audible version of Alter Carbon makes it seem like he's extremely grateful about making enough money from his writing rather than having to teach, so I suppose you are probably correct.

Still though, that's got to sting a little. Network producers thinking they know how best to mangle your story to appeal to a new audience. I guess if there are enough zeros on the correct side of the decimal point, it's more than enough for the effort.

Really not digging s2 as much as s1. Couple episodes in and a bit 'meh' about finishing it whereas I was binging s1.
Feels a total cop-out that they've had 60 years of planet hopping yet s2 is all back in all the same spots as s1. I know they've got budget to worry about but that feels lame and weird

i enjoyed season 1 and the CG film. the actors did a decent job in season 2 though the plot and protagonist kovaks personality didn't hook me.
poe is the true star of the show XD

I enjoyed Season 2 myself. Really liked the trio of protags near the end. Never been a huge fan of Poe myself, but I see the appeal.

The best part of the Animated feature was the design on the "Character" CTAC officer, but damn, I'm getting tired of the literal Spotlight segments for explaining concepts to the audience lol.

Well, after watching both seasons I must say that first one was cool, but second one felt as if showrunners haven't really read the books. And I really dislike the trend to pull romance or other similar subplots out of one's ass to somehow make it all "more personal". Almost all of the changes introduced this way were for the worse. Changing Envoys from Protectorate force to a scrappy rebel group made them less interesting, not the opposite. Making Reileen a family felt forced and unnecessary. Carrera being Jaeger also made the character more shallow than it could be, making him more focused on Kovacs than on the actual political plot (dealing with which was his main fucking task). Making so much of season's two plot about Kovacs/Quell romance was the perfect example of why forcing romance subplots into perfectly fine works is bullshit. In the attempt of making it the main plot it got in the way of the actual one, making the characters act stupid to say the least.

Special mention should go to the way characters were written and acted out. Kinnaman was much, much better Kovacs than Mackie. He actually acted like an Envoy; constantly gathered information, digested it, was able to think on his feet and it was obvious that he's in control of his actions and situations he's in, or can at least steer them. Mackie's Kovacs was about being constantly outwitted or outfought by someone, while being angry at everyone around.

It is refreshing to see a cast of black folk in lead roles and white characters in the support roles too

For all the great visuals of S1, the story had way too many changes made to it for its own good.
Then the mess they made of S2 (which started with them continuing the unnecessary changes made for S1 and was exacerbated by them mixing up elements of books 2 and 3 and tossing out all of the good bits to make room for more guff.

Also, it's no surprise that it got "cancelled" after what they did with S2, they had nowhere else to go, anyway.
