I'm kind of wondering whether it's worth trying to get into O-12... That's why I'd like to ask: what makes this faction special (if anything)?

I mean, I have a lot of Haqqislam folk, who are the faction I'm the most sympathetic to. Game-wise, they seem to be on the light infantry side. Then, I have ALEPH, who are intriguing fluff-wise and are this elite army full of unique heroes. I have some Nomads, who are high-tech, have interesting tricks and are quite colourful when it comes to the background. I hope to build an Ikari mini-army someday, who will be my scoundrel army. And I started assembling some Yu Jing lately, as I like their heavy-armoured, high-tech style...

Considering all this, is there anything new O-12 offers, either when it comes to army "style" or background?

    Please help :)

Their general theme seems to be very optimised unit profiles. Epsilon is pretty much a better Nisse, Omega a slightly more expensive ORC trooper with ODD(!) and template weapons, their line infantry Hacker is super cheap because it has an SMG isntead of a Combi Rifle etc.

They also have some nice command shenanigans like Strategos L2, Chain of Command and counterintelligence in the Alpha Unit and Catherine Cho, so you are pretty flexible in your LT choice and strategy. Want an aggressive LT? Go for a Gamma/Omega and back him up with a 20 points CoC model that can also disguise itself with Holoecho 1 and is shock immune. Want to go for the defensive choice? Pick an Alpha unit and benefit from Strategos without being a complete wimp against impersonators/infiltrators, since you have Biometric Visor L2 and Guard L4.

    Also worth mentioning:

    - direct template weapons with adhesive ammo, which fits the police theme fairly nicely and also happens to be a very strong asset. Your opponent better bring an Engineer.

    - access to White Noise and Team Sirius which does make life very hard for MSV AROs (hello, Kamau Sniper!)

    - TO Camo Specialist with Plasma Carbine and Assault Pistol (no infiltration though)

    - Great Warband with Berserk, PH 14 Smoke Grenades and template weapon(s), so MSV 2 + Smoke is possible

    - No dedicated combat Remotes (like Rui Shi or Bulleteer)

    - 6-2 Remote Presence HI (similar to Hollow Men), but with Mimetism and Climbing Plus instead of Super Jump (more expensive and more gadgets)

So in general I find O12 to be pretty interesting and somewhat unorthodox, which is good in my book. They also still have a relatively small roster for a Vanilla faction which limits their flexibility somewhat, but what they have is premium, a bit like Aleph but from a totally different angle.

I see... And who are these guys fluff-wise? I may be mistaken, but I don't think there's any written info on them in Third Offensive or Daedalus Fall... So, what's the deal with them? Are they some sort of global military, or something like that?

The O-12 is basically the Space UN, but with teeth. They keep humanity from tearing themselves apart. All the Human Sphere powers will defer to them and the have the power to actually enforce edicts.

Hmm. So, if these guys hold the Human Sphere together, then what is the role of ALEPH? I thought that it was ALEPH who was holding the humanity together, hunting rogue AIs etc.? And it was why ALEPH had agents, soldiers etc.?

ALEPH acts as an adviser to O-12 when it comes to policy and manages the details on a lot of tasks like the orbitals but O-12 humans still make the final decisions. The only army the people know about is the greek stuff and the devas. The greeks were a special emergency army to fight on paradiso and devas are seen as human-computer interfaces for ALEPH. Every other unit is ALEPHs secret shadow army that no one knows about, like the fluff for ASURAs have all recordings of them being wiped out automatically as they walk around.

Aleph is an AI that controls the "super internet" of the Infinity world. Most things are hooked up to this extranet and Aleph monitors it. One of the Bureaus of O-12 (Toth I think) is in charged of Aleph's maintenance and hunting down rogue AI. Aleph often uses its Devas in these operations.

Aleph is literally Big Brother. Its main purpose to observe everything electronic that its connected to (which is almost everything in the infinity setting) and provide advice to O-12 officers that oversee it. It also provides advice to the member states that consent to its big brother role.

As for O-12's fighting style, they play pretty similar to Pano with some more toolboxy units that remind one of Nomads. I like to call them Pano but with nice things. Like smoke+MSV 2 combo, an elite warband, better specialists option, etc.

We as wargamers think of ALEPH as a militarised faction but in reality the SSS is a tiny fraction of what ALEPH does. Imagine if the Internet/Cloud was alive, self-policing and constantly looking to improve itself in order to give humanity a better service. Imagine if the Internet battled fake news, illegal pornography, dark web prostitution, cybercrime etc all by itself. Now imagine that 99% of people live in a world where everything is done online to a greater extent than even now, where all houses are smart houses, where everyone has their own Alexa. Then you get an idea about the vast scale of ALEPH. The military bits are a drop in a drop in the ocean, made to do very specific jobs. The O-12 is quite distinct from that, if you think about it.
