If anything C1 is comparable to the Operation Icestorm, only they're starting with 4 factions this time rather than 2. Edit: Not to say that I'm not disappointed that it's only starting with four factions, not going to let it bother me until I know more about the rollout pace though.
If you are on this forum and a known member code 1 is not targeted for you. So the ow roll out doesn't matter cause we aren't supposed to be playing it. We'll see if it pays off. I want it to but have real reservations that they aren't rolling it out globally on the right way.
I keep hearing C1/N4 is designed to make Infinity more accessible to the new players, as compared to the complexity of N3. But I'm a new player, I just got into Infinity, just started getting to grips with N3 and I'm loving it! I'm sceptical about the idea of simplifying the rules. I'm thinking that should C1/N4 turn out underwhelming, I will just keep playing N3. I guess we'll see how it works out
My immediate response to C1 being announced was thinking that it was a distraction and the wrong way to fix troublesome mechanics (hiding them from new players). I don't think there is much that can be simplified.
I don't know if this is really consistent with the messaging from CB. Yes, I think C1 is designed as a gateway ruleset, sure, but they've stated over and over it's going to be a fully fleshed out ruleset - not just a nickname for the new player quickstart rules. That's why they talk about parallel Army and ITS scenes for it. We can debate about whether or not that's a great idea, but I think the stated goal was to offer us all a second way to play infinity that was simplified. Now, I tend to think that most of the people playing infinity will, in practical terms, be wanting to move to the N4 ruleset over the C1, but it kinda depends on what they deliver. If it's just infinity lite, then I don't see it offering much to those of us already here aside from a way to introduce new guys. But if it's a fast-playing game with it's own interesting and durable meta (say like the difference between Standard and Legacy in M:tG) then who knows? I'm game to find out, I just wish they'd offered more existing players a way to get involved from the start.
More that CodeOne will be the N4 version of the Operation introductory rules, but across all armies eventually, rather than just the two in the box. A good chance to get grounded in the rules before adding in Hacking, Fireteams, etc. N4 will be a complete update of the full rule set.
For reference, they announced almost immediately that ITS would be N4 only, C1 is being developed as a casual option.
I'm not saying it's a bad thing. I find it's actually great that infinity is expanding and evolving! CB are bringing 3 new sectorials and a whole new ruleset in 2020. It's great! For me personally it's just sad seeing N3 go, now that I've just got used to it. But yeah things change, that's the way it goes and that's ok. I suppose I'm a bit scared of being pushed into the casual niche with C1, because the advanced rules in N3 are a crucial part of the game for me. I think I could either take a look at C1 or skip it altogether, and just wait for what N4 brings.
Thanks. Disappointing, as now aside from newbie training, I don't see any point to C1. Weird I that it wasn't a slip up in the video- he says pretty clearly there will be a tourney scene for organized (its) play at 25:19 and forward. But they must have changed their plans.
Really ? And when will the other factions be available ? That is VERY disappointing. A lot of new players here are awaiting this new way to play infinity like the Messiah. Lot of them have nomads or JSA models. If it turns out they can't play these factions I can see some of them sell their stuff and walk away. That's a very bad move from CB imho. One that could really damage the company excellent reputation and turn away a lot of customers. That's very frustrating when you spend time and energy promoting the game around you ... :( Releasing an unfinished (not all profiles yet) or not completely balanced version of all factions and release an update later would have been so much better. Or at the very least tell us when the others will be available ! I know rule Dev is not your top priority as it doesn't directly make you money but forgetting that part can badly hurt your sales.
As I said, at the launch there will be available that 4 armies. And those will be the available ones during 2020. More armies will be added on 2021. Think that CodeOne will have his own product range and we cannot release them for all armies in one month. We need to do that staggered way, we cannot release, for example, 100 references of CodeOne in two months.
What I was about to say, people remember Code one is not just a simpler way to play Infinity, but also a product line and more importantly a better system for retailers and distributors to get Infinity to new players and you, patience and you will get a better Infinity experience not only playing but on all levels, the future is build in solid foundations with time and care, not blind rush.
Even if it's a new product line, and by that I understand just repackaging existing stuff to wear the logo of Code One, I just find the choice of starting armies odd. It would be best to release the 6 N1 core armies: PanO, YJ, Ariadna, Haqq, Nomads and CA as they are the best representatives of the game and offer variety and simplicity. And even in the case of being really restricted to 4 starting armies there's one in CB's choice that's completely redundant: O12. There's no reason for it to be an initial army (other that to admit that they are the new pet army) as it just clashes with PanO and CA, being an optimized version of PanO. Instead its slot would be best covered by a total different army like Ariadna. That would add variety to the game. tl,dr; Accepting a limited production release time to launch the new line, It's a shame O12 makes it into the starting armies (by virtue of being the new cool guy) when it's just an army completely lacking personality compared to the other three.
O-12 has the virtue of having all essential units been new sculpts with the new easy to assemble cutting and presumably been designed for code one from the start, so its a logical choice.
