Greetings fellow commanders of the State Empire! I just started playing last year, but due to busy life have only gotten a few games in. I started with the Red Veil box and played through all the beginner missions, and played three 300-point games (first two of which I used models in the Red Veil and Beyond boxes).

My third game, played last week, was Acquisition against vanilla Nomad with the following list:
    Acquisition
    ──────────────────────────────────────────────────

    GROUP 1[IMG] [IMG] [IMG]10 [IMG]4
CELESTIAL GUARD (Kuang Shi Control Device) Combi Rifle + Light Smoke Grenade Launcher / Pistol, Knife. (0.5 | 13)
KUANG SHI Chain Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 5)
KUANG SHI Chain Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 5)
KUANG SHI Chain Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 5)
KUANG SHI Chain Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 5)
WÈIBĪNG Yaókòng Combi Rifle, Sniffer / Electric Pulse. (0 | 16)
    DÀOFĚI Spitfire / Pistol, Shock CCW. (2 | 55)
TIGER SOLDIER Paramedic (MediKit) Combi Rifle + Light Flamethrower / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 29)
GŬILÁNG (Forward Observer, Deployable Repeater) Combi Rifle, Antipersonnel Mines / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 27)
GŬILÁNG MULTI Sniper Rifle, Antipersonnel Mines / Pistol, Knife. (1.5 | 33)

    GROUP 2[IMG] [IMG] [IMG]5
DĀOYĪNG Lieutenant L2 Hacker (Hacking Device) Boarding Shotgun / Breaker Pistol, Knife. (0.5 | 29)
    MECH-ENGINEER Combi Rifle, D-Charges / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 15)
    YÁOZĂO Electric Pulse. (0 | 3)
    SON-BAE Yaókòng Smart Missile Launcher / Electric Pulse. (1.5 | 18)
NINJA Hacker (Killer Hacking Device) Tactical Bow / Pistol, DA CCW, Knife. (0 | 29)
    BOUNTY HUNTER Submachine Gun, Akrylat-Kanone / Breaker Pistol, Knife. (0 | 12)

    6 SWC | 299 Points

    Open in Infinity Army

The only difference was I used a Zuyong FO instead of Guilang FO on the list. The reasoning was I thought he'd be sturdier at holding objectives and being liaison officer. I got both antennas and the tech coffin in turn 2 but didn't manage to hold them in turn 3. I ended up losing 7-1. We discussed at length after the game and I learned quite a few things.

I still have some questions upon some reflection:
    1. Should I shuffle the CG and Kuangshi with some of the troopers in group 2? It was my first game using Kuangshi and I find they died quite easily due to impetuous. I was quickly running out of orders in my main group.

    2. Tips for using Kuangshi? In my game they still did their jobs clearing out speed bumps, but my opponent had a lot of shock ammo so bypassed the Kuangshi's dogged or explode.

    3. How do I effectively defend my backfield? A Hellcat walked in from the side outside my DZ and killed my data tracker.

    4. Would a Zhanshi Yisheng be more effective in my list? My engineer didn't do anything all game and I was wishing I brought the medic instead.

    5. Any other tips for my list?

    Thanks very much in advance.

    1. The CG and Kuang Shi needs to be in the same group. Try putting them in total cover in a way that their entire movement stays in total cover. (So they move along the backside of a building for example, or if you can put them indoors where the only exit is torward your DZ)

    2. If they gave you an order and took orders from your opponent to get shot, they did their job. If you can keep them behind cover in a way that the only way they can be seen by your opponent is within the range of their Chain Rifle, they'll most likely trade up.

    3. Anything that has a large template (Kuang Shi are perfect for this). You can also just park your flash pulse bots so that they look at the 12"-24" sides on each sides.

    4. I personally really dislike medics, most of the things you'd want to doctor up are midfields anyway. The engineer doesn't do much in your list, but it's extremely good if you take a Su'Jian or a Rui Shi (Both of which are contenders for the best attack pieces in the faction)

    5. Guilang Multi-Sniper is very mediocre imo, I'd get a minelayer or another FO. The Smart Missile Launcher is always very underwhelming and very expensive on SWC. If you swap those 2 models out, you could get yourself some much more potent SWC. The rest of the lists is good, all great troopers.

Thanks for the advice! Yes, the Smart Missile Launcher did very little during the game. What would you suggest as a replacement?

I remember during the game I was wishing for LGL for some spec fire as my opponent hid his models very well. What would be a good LGL profile for my list?

If you're missing a big gun and a trooper that can deal with turtled up models, I'd suggest fielding a Su'Jian. With its high movement and climbing plus, it can dislodge most stuff, it's a very reliable trooper for a great price.

The Su-Jian is an awesome attack piece, but him anf ghe Daofei play equal-ish roles as expensive Spitfire Platforms (and so does the Mowang). Might not be too easy fitting in both.

The Daoying Hacker LT is an awesome profile, but what do you spend his LT orders on? It could help the Tiger land and there might be situations to buff the FO Robot guy, but to be sure to always spend the orders somewhere, I would add another dude that benefits from “free” hacking.

Will the Tiger always land on turn 1? Otherwise you might consider swapping him into group 2, so you have your 10 Orders for your main attack pieces turn one.

If replacing the Guilang Sniper and the SON BAE, that frees up 51 points.
    - A Guilang Minelayer would strengthen your midfield defense, Guilang Assault Hacker adds another specialist and solution for TAGs and HI.
    - Rui Shi provides another attacker, is a target for LT orders and is a safe way to dislodge all those Mimetism and ODD guys. And he has great synergy with the Smoke Grenades

Instead of the Guilang Minelayer, a Libertos Minelayer does nearly the same. It might be not exactly as good, but it is really cheap and would free up 21 points. Those could be spent on for example Xi-Zhuang with mad traps, who would aid your backfield defense quite a lot and is another Liason option.
Or if you want to go really spammy, 21 points could as well be Flash Pulse Bot, Warcor, Shaolin, Shaolin.

All this is much up to personal preference. You could as well trade all for another big attacker like Hsien HMG. Su-Jian, Mowang, etc.

Guilang Sniper is just fine. You need to decise whether to pretend to be a mine with it, a Guilang FO or just sit at home being all "hey, I'm a Daoying/Guilang sniper, better hide!"
Just don't expect it to do much and above all else remember that it loses to HMGs so avoid those firelanes.

Son Bae is also an okay missile launcher, but missile launchers suffer from having burst 1 so they pretty much have to be smart and be in a list built for smart missile launchers (which yours isn't). Otherwise sticking Assisted Fire on it and try and find the longest firelanes possible is a valid tactic. Again, this isn't the kind of model you get value from by rolling dice with it, you get value from preventing you opponent from moving weak button pushers to objectives and short range warbands into your DZ.

Have you tried finding one more point and upgrading the Daofei to HMG? Personally I often find Spitfires to be sort of peashooters.

Kuang Shi you need to decide whether they are order batteries or some sort of alpha striking or ARO pieces. Deploy them accordingly.
Most tables will have a bunch of places where they will be able to run 4" without taking enemy fire, but they'll be a lot less likely if there's some monks to chuck smoke down for them before they move.

I don't see the point of the ABH when a Zhanshi FO costs tthe same and is a specialist. As in, I don't see the point of trying to get minor quality upgrade for a unit that you're really hoping to not have to spend orders on.

In either case, this is clearly a case of that it's not your list, because you've got most tools you need. Possibly it's your table, but more likely it's target priority, over-aggression, not knowing what surprises you can expect or that you don't have a plan for them.

I've only had three games so far, and in every game the Tiger came on turn 2. I think I'll swap her into group 2. Thanks for the suggestion.

If I replace the sniper and smart missile then I'll need another long range weapon. I might try the Ruishi.

The Guilang Sniper did ok in the last game. She cleared a lane and guarded it, then moved up and laid mines around an antenna. I'll keep in mind to keep her out of HMG's way.

That shouldn't be too hard. I used the Daofei aggressively in turn 1 so the shorter range band worked out anyway.

It was the first time I used Kuang Shi. I had first turn so was playing them as offense pieces, perhaps too aggressively. Next game I'll try to deploy them as order batteries.

I took an ABH just to experiment and see what it'll do. I rolled a motorcycle on booty so scooted him up to clear some crazy koalas. He became and annoyance that had to be dealt with if my opponent wanted to get to the antenna so I guess that was fine.

Yeah that's exactly it. I'm still getting used to different units I've faced. So far I've played against Druze, TAK, and vanilla Nomad. This game has tons of units so target priority is a challenge. For example in my turn 1 I missed an opportunity to take down an Interventor hacker lieutenant with my Daofei. I could've had my opponent in LoL in turn 1 but I didn't even know it!

Also, any suggestions on how to deal with a TR remote behind cover?

ABH: Ah, you rolled one of the best results you could get! ODD would be another extremely fortunate result, as would an HMG.

    TR REMs:
    * Guilang Snipers, Ninja Snipers, Hac Tao HMG, Armand, etc. Guilang needs Surprise Attack to be fully safe, but otherwise shoot it from outside of 32". This is the most common way of dealing with them.
    * Failing that, Hac Tao HMG, Yan Huo HRMC, Armand, Guijia, etc and just beat it through superior MODs, superior ARM and superior W/STR and remember to shoot it and/or its Engineers until it's impossible to repair it.
    * Ninja non-sniper, Hac Tao KHD, Daofei, Guilang FO, etc. get into the -3 rangeband at 0-8" and shoot it from there.
    * Ninja, Hac Tao, Shaolin. Get into melee, use Marker state or Smoke to do it.
    * Hsien HMG, Haidao sniper or buffed Rui Shi and shoot through smoke. This'll typically have a 15-20% risk attached to it as the REM will be shooting back at +3 for range and -9 for smoke and cover (unless it's buffed). This is the most common way for Yu Jing to deal with them.
    * Send a warband to their death. Typically a Kuang Shi backed up by a smoking monk or the monk themselves
    * Ignore them. Go for the mission, use Marker state to avoid them, go after their Hackers. Box them in with mines and Perimeter weapons.
    * Augment any of the above with Nimbus grenades from Zhanying. Particularly Lunah loves these 'nades.

    General recommendation
A tip that one of my friends picked up from a podcast is to try to spend orders as 5-3-2; 5 to kill your opponent, 3 to score objectives, 2 to fall back. Or it might've been 4-2-2-2 (kill-score-retreat-wildcard). In either case, try to put a hard limit on the number of orders spent on chasing your opponent. If your opponent is fully dug in, focus on scoring and mining the place up and set your self up for a better turn next turn - don't try to dig him out from the other side of the table.

Try to ask yourself "how many orders do I need to pull this off?". If you think taking out an enemy is going to leave your attack piece in a bad spot during your opponents turn then maybe it's not a good idea to go for it. Keeping your order pool healthy is as important (maybe more) than hurting your opponent's.

Hope you play more this year!

Lawdawg of the blue pen? Even if not, Welcome!!!

The classic way to deal with a Total Reaction Remote is to hit it with a camo'd sniper from outside 32". It's at -12 to shoot (due to range, cover, camo, and Surprise Shot) on it's BS11 and at -6 to Dodge (due to being a REM and Surprise Shot) on it's PH10, your Guilang or Ninja is hitting on 14s with DA ammo. On the rifle range, that's called a moving target.

The Rui Shi is pretty much an ideal fit for your list.

It's fast, it adds MSV2 and has nice synergy with the LT L2 Daoying, the Mech Engineer and your CG Smoke grenade launcher. Pop assissted fire on the Rui Shi and re-camo without infringing on your regular orders, toss some smoke and go on a killing spree.

Shaolin add cheap smoke to support your Rui Shi. They are also a possible candidate for a resculpt in Operation Kaldstrom (coming at the end of March). A 5 point impetuous chain rifle/smoke tosser is also a very efficient piece to have in general.

Managing 7 ex. impetuous troops can be difficult, but you should see them as disposable in the first place. At 5 points each, they trade up against pretty much anything. A nice trick is to to spend a coordinated order to move the Kuang Shi back to their starting spots, if it means saving 4 regular orders for an additional turn.

At some point you'll probably want to switch the Tiger or the Ninja into CG1 (or both), depending on which one of the two has a bigger chance to impact your game. If you cut the YaoZao and one Shaolin, you can also fit a Chaiyi Yaokong into your list for better sniffer coverage, an additional regular order and another defensive Flash Pulse. All your REMs have a Repeater, so the Daoying can also use Overclock at the end of your turn in order to bolster your defense.

I was having a hard time managing the Kuang Shis. Using them as disposable didn't work for me as I was relying on them to provide orders. I'll try the coordinated order to hide them, that's a great idea. I did not transfer troops between combat groups. As a new player I'm having a hard enough time getting my head wrapped around all the rules and interactions. Really looking forward to Code One to streamline the rules.

The Daoying LT2 Hacker does not have an Evo hacker device, meaning she cannot use the Overclock Supportware, however she can use either Assisted Fire or Enhanced Reaction to buff up one REM for the reactive turn.

Yup, mixed it up with Enhanced Reaction. Thanks for the correction!
