These are my battle reports from the 2020 Furor Teutonicus, one of Germany’s satellite tournaments. We had a 50 player turn out, the tables were excellent and the organisation was fantastic.

Food was provided for a 10 euro flat fee for the weekend, including vegan options, snacks, and cakes. The event was run according to schedule and lists were checked before the tournament started. Instructions were given in English.

Everyone I met was lovely and I really liked the atmosphere. The community is easy-going and the common goal was to have a great weekend. This was my second time attending and I think it's a great tournament.

My only gripe was that two of my opponents had unpainted armies. I find it much harder to identify which models are which when they are unpainted, which adds to my mental load and reduces my ability to play the game clearly. Personally, I think unpainted armies are not as fun to play against, and grant a minor but real advantage to the player who didn’t paint them. If I was a organiser at a Satellite, (which I have never done, and cannot appreciate how much work it is) I think I would advocate for three-colour models as a minimum requirement.

I don’t recall each game perfectly but hope these reports capture the feeling of the matches. Let me know if I should correct anything, and I’d love to hear your feedback!

    The missions were:
    1. Unmasking
    2. Countermeasures
    3. Quadrant Control
    4. Furor Missile (custom)
    5. Looting and Sabotaging

It was a 300 point, 6 SWC, Tactical Window (15 models max) tournament. Chess clocks were expected, but for a couple of the games we both didn’t have one. I like chess clocks as they remove the stress of trying to get your opponent to play quickly. They give freedom to both players to spend their time how they want to, and I don’t have to worry about feeling like I’m rushing my opponent when I am worried we won’t finish the game on time. In a couple of games this weekend one player went to time and the other player just gave them their time as overall we had a good few minutes to spare, so it’s not like the chess clocks have to be so strict that they’re stressful.

I decided to take Shasvastii as I wanted to play with Speculo minelayers and Cadmus droptroops. I had played about 8 games with Shas so far and hadn’t really been able to make them work outside of Speculos. I have played lots of Haqqislam twin-Fiday lists, but have never really used link teams before. Switching from Ghazis to Taighas has been interesting and I’m trying to get the hang of them. The switch from large to small template is huge, but the Dodge on 16s with Kinematic 2 is excellent.

This list is designed first for Looting and Sabotage, and then also for Unmasking. It has three plans to blow up the AC2: a) Sheskiin/Victor Messer D-Charges with link team burst bonus destroy it completely in one or two orders, b) Taighas use their DA to whittle the AC2 to death, or c) the Cadmus drop troop uses Scavenger to pick up D-Charges in the enemy’s Deployment Zone (my favourite plan).

For Unmasking, Sheskiin is the obvious Datatracker, and can pull Victor to the midfield to unlock the consoles. By clumping into one corner of the board, I can hopefully pull defences off the middle console, so my Shrouded or Victor can hit two consoles without too much trouble.

The Speculo gives smoke in the enemy DZ, which is an excellent way to ignore important ARO pieces, or can be used to assassinate threats or obvious Lieutenants. The Minelayer option is extremely powerful, letting you start deployed with a mine on a defending piece (like a TR Remote or linked Sniper). This also lets you walk past a model without being Discovered, as otherwise the mine would go off.

The Q-Drone is there as excellent long range support, with Dr Worm to add to its threat and order cost to remove.

I chose to play Shasvastii because I wanted to play with Minelayer Speculos and Cadmus. Originally I was going to take all four Cadmus, but decided to be more sensible and just take two.

This list is for Countermeasures and Quadrant Control. Countermeasures can be extremely easy for Shasvastii, as between the Speculo (who is a Veteran Troop), the KHD Cadmus, and Dr Worm there is only one Classified they cannot perform. The Speculo is extra good in that she can use her Automedikit to either a) get back up or b) remove her corpse, preventing the opponent from using her for an easy Classified like Coup de Grace.

I took the Dazer to slow down the opponent coming for my HVTs.I play this list as if there is a Noctifer or two and try to manipulate the board so that the opponent will avoid where they think the Noctifer will be.

    Round One – Unmasking
    Opponent: Epsilon6180, Toaa

    Unmasking
    • Kill the Designated Target (3)
    • Kill the Designated Target with your Datatracker (+2)
    • Kill more Target Decoys (1)
    • Have more Consoles activated (2)
    • Keep your Designated Target alive (1)
    • Keep your Datatracker alive (1)

I don’t recall who won the roll off, the outcome was that I deployed second on the closest half of the board and went second.

I am pretty happy going second in Unmasking as the deployment advantage is so enormous, and I do not think my opponent will have enough orders to 1) activate 1-3 consoles, 2) guess the right HVT, and 3) reach and kill my HVT. They know that if they get to press the buttons but then stay in the midfield then they are in great danger of the Taighas/link team, so I find the first turn is often pretty wasted.

    Deployment

Two of his HVT’s went in the middle of the board on the left, the other on the right table edge. His Gao-Rael sniper team and Draal team went on the far left building, the Taagma triad (Holoprojected as a Gao-Rael sniper) went in the middle, and his Rasail and other triad went on the far right.

I did what I normally do, which is put everything in the one spot and defend the hell out of it. My three HVTs went on the left table edge with two Taighas and the Speculo, the link team went on the close left building, the Q-drone sat in the middle watching the two right consoles, and the Shrouded went on the far right with a Taigha.

The Taighas are excellent point defence thanks to Six Sense 1 (delaying AROs in ZoC), the Chain Colt, and Dodging on 16s. The Zapper on the Nox shuts down any non-Veteran rambo attack piece.

I think putting all HVTs in the same spot is great, as its lets you stack your defences, and your opponent usually only has one attack piece in the right spot, which means after that attack fails they have trek across the board to even start the mission. Putting two HVTs together means I would usually guess the distant one first, so I can rule out having to get pieces in position to attack that side of the board. Putting all three HVTs in different spots is the hardest to plan for, but the individual defences for each HVT are weaker, which means the link-team has an easier time getting the kill if they can get there.

His Datatracker was the Draal, mine was Sheskiin.

Top of turn one - Tohaa

I docked his second pool, as I was worried about the Rasail causing havoc (due to previous trauma, see my Interplanetario report for details). I get Counterintelligenced, which I was not expecting. After the game I found out that the Taagma Schemer has Counterintelligence and Holo 1, but I still would have spent the Token even if I had known about it.

His right hand camo marker (a Libertos) comes down the right flank and puts my Taigha unconscious, before putting a mine next to my Shrouded (which is allowed because the Taigha is a valid target).

He transfers his Rasail to his first group, which makes me a little nervous. A 2-wound Spitfire with Nanoscreen (portable 360 cover) and Symbiomate, plus a heavy flamethrower bot, is a scary prospect. He treks from the far right corner to the middle, and starts coming down the lefthand corrider, using Cautious Moves to sneak past my Q-drone. He then comes to the blue statue and takes peeks at my Taighas, who manage to Dodge to good positions. He walks out and spends an order or two knocking my FO Nox unconscious, and ends the turn in Suppressive Fire behind the middle building near the red crates. Luckily he wasn’t able to do much damage.

Bottom of turn one - Shas

Two Taighas manage to survive their Extremely Impetuous Dodges into the Rasail’s Suppressive Fire, and one uses his chain-colt to remove the Symbiomate before going unconscious. I then send the 6-2 Ikadron to lay his twin flamethrowers on the Rasail, killing him and not dying in the process.

I force the interaction on the right flank and try to dodge with the Shrouded, but he dies instead. I probably should have left him there and let my opponent spend the order, but if the Shrouded won the combat he could have hit both consoles on this turn without a fuss, which would be a huge advantage.

I don’t really want to venture into the midfield at this point, so Victor uses Casevac on the FO Nox, carrying him down the stairs to where Dr Worm can heal him up. I then move everyone into defensive positions to await the next attack and be able to strike at the consoles next turn.

Top of turn two – Tohaa

He sends his Draal/Makaul/Kriigel triad down the left flank. One Taigha starts Dodging towards him, which slows him down by making him shoot. It goes down, but did its job of slowing his triad. He hits a button, guessing the closest HVT (a Decoy). His Draal starts attacking the link, getting to slice the pice and shoot just one at a time, but it takes an enormous amount of orders and doesn’t make much headway. B2 B14 combi rifles in cover can be really hard to remove, as they negate a lot of hits and can save a lot of ARM rolls. He is running out of orders, so pushes the Draal out in the open to try and knock out a few models, but takes 4 crits in ARO, going from a 2W Total Immunity ARM 12 model to dead in a single order. The Kriigel tries to Isolate Sheskiin with some sort of Pheroware attack, but is killed without success.

The Libertos walks up the bottom right building and takes some shots at the Q-drone with his shotgun. Unfortunately the dice continue not working for my opponent, and after a couple orders the Libertos is dead and Q-drone is fine.

Bottom of turn two - Shas

    Things are looking pretty good.

My Taigha rounds the corner on the blue statue and Berserks the Makaul to death.

The Kaauri were my Taigha proxies.

I move the link up a bit, using Sheskiin’s B5 BS 18 to put the left Gao-Rael unconscious, and hit left button, revealing one of the two left HVTs as the real one. Usually I would pick the far HVT, but I was already on the left and knew I would get two consoles this turn, letting me reveal both HVTs on the left. If they were both Decoys, which I doubted based on his deployment, I would get the third console on my way to the right HVT anyway. Luckily I guessed the correct HVT first, (the one more tucked into cover, as expected).

Top of turn three - Tohaa

He doesn’t really have a lot of options at this point. His right Triad uses Eclipse Smoke and presses the right Console, revealing my second Decoy. His Kaeltar specialist stands up, leaps off the far left building, survives the fall, sprints to the left Console and activates it, revealing my HVT and getting blasted by Victors B2 Boarding Shotgun. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have any orders left to do attack my HVT, so just stands some pieces up to ARO.

Bottom of turn three - Shas

I am worried about a Flash Pulse ARO, so the Speculo throws smoke on the console, which Victor promptly reactivates (so I have more Consoles). Sheskiin then uses the smoke to reach the HVT and Decoy without ARO, gunning them down mercilessly. I spend my remaining couple orders using Dr Worm to heal up my backline for the Victory Points.

    Conclusion
    10-0 major win (241-103)

    Things I learnt:
    • Symbiomates don’t help if you get 4 crits in ARO.
    • Ikadrons have pistols, which is useful against a Symbiomate (Total Immunity ignores Flash Pulse)
    • Taagma Schemers are in Tohaa, but do not have a Viral Sniper Rifle, only a Combi. These have Counterintelligence.
Things I could have done better:
    • Putting the Shrouded next to Taigha was poor, as it allowed exactly the play used here. At the very least I should have chain-colted instead of dodging with the Taigha, so it would at least hopefully die instead of being knocked unconscious.
    • Dr Worm should have been placed in the middle so he could run for the middle console and heal the Q-drone.
A fun game which demonstrated the power of 5-man links, Taighas and Nox Zapper threats. My opponent kept his cool despite all his plans not working out, (like taking 4 crits in one ARO), and was a very good player.

    Round Two – Countermeasures

I took the first turn, I’m unsure who won the roll. The opening Classifieds were a Hacker ZoC roll, the Casevac one, and I can’t recall the third.

    Deployment

I put everything in the bottom left corner again, with all three HVTs hiding behind that building in the middle left. A Q-drone, the Taighas, the Shrouded with Dazer and the Ikradron guarded the HVTs. Dr Worm went in the middle with an Ikadron, and the M drone went on the right flank. I was unsure where to put the first Speculo, and decided on the left flank to help encourage my opponent to not deploy there, putting more distance between him and my HVTs. I had my second Speculo and the Cadmus, so didn’t care how far away his HVTs would be deployed.

He put the Foxhole viral Sniper on top of the building in the middle, where it turns out it could see every exit from my DZ without a problem. The rest of his stuff went behind the same building and the far right building. His HVTs were in the right flank, with two behind the bus and one in the middle.

My reserve Speculo deployed on the right, placing the mine with the Makaul in the trigger zone. His reserve drop was his TO Clipsos, who went in the same area in Hidden Deployment.

Top of turn one - Shas

I let my right Taigha run forwards, fail the dodge against the sniper and go unconscious. Writing this now I realise it should have been dead instead due to viral, which is important for two Classifieds later. The other Taigha take up aggressive defensive positions on my left flank.

I can’t really do the Classifieds, but neither can he, so I plan on spending the turn killing his attack power and mission capability. The Speculo walzes up behind the FO Sukeul (who I imagine will be his Lieutenant, which will cost him three orders over the course of the game), finding a nice spot where the WHD Kamael can’t see her. She smokes the Sukeul, and kills her in two orders with the Monofilament blade. She then takes out the WHD Kamael, leaving my opponent without a Hacker, which I think is a big deal for the Classifieds. The Speculo then goes along the back edge and shoots dead the Kumotail Doc/Engineer, another great Classified fulfiller. The Speculo kills the Chaksa flamethrower on the walk back into the right corner before re-Impersonating.

Bottom of turn one - Tohaa

His Makaul rushes forward with his impetuous order, dodging the mine. The Kaauri Sentinel walks up to the Speculo, and demonstrates the power of the Biometric Visor (ignore the -6, and receives a +3 to Discover), killing the Speculo in an embarrassingly small number of orders. His Clipsos reveals and runs forward, Forward Observing the unconscious Taigha in my right midfield.

Top of turn two - Shas

The possible Classifieds this turn are to end the turn touching an enemy, and get my Doctor and a Veteran to a HVT. I’m feeling pretty locked down by the Viral Sniper, but don’t think of any great plans around it. I drop my Cadmus in behind the Kaauri Sentinel in order to get the Classified on the unconscious Chaksa. This is, of course, a terrible plan as Kaauri Sentinel have Sixth Sense level 2. I land correctly, then next order shoot the Kaauri and get templated in return. Obviously in hindsight I should have 1) not landed next to it, and 2) not shot it in template range. So now I’ve just delivered a corpse to his DZ, letting him have the Classified in his turn. I can’t think of anything sensible to do, so just walk my Speculo across the table, kill the Clipsos, and link with the HVT for the Classified. As I can’t go into Impersonator state so I go into Suppressive Fire.

Bottom of turn two - Tohaa

His Makaul runs forward and gets gunned down by the Speculo. His Draal then walks up to the building edge and puts the Speculo unconscious, which I now realise should also have died from the Shock ammo. His Kaauri runs up to my Cadmus for the Classified, then uses Casevac on the WHD Kamael for his third Classified. His Draal link moves up to go on overwatch on the far central building. His Sukeul runs up to touch my Taigha for another Classified.

Top of turn three - Shas

They say that “adversity is the preparation for greatness”. Unfortunately, in this particular case, greatness did not arrive. I needed to do all three Classifieds to have a chance of a draw, but I can’t recall what they were. I think I needed to run my Doc out past the sniper, Draal, and Kaeltar on overwatch for four consecutive orders, then pass a couple of WIP rolls on the first try. I think all that happened is he ran out and died, and that was the game.

Bottom of turn three - Tohaa

I can’t recall what happened in his last turn, I think he had already got all his Classifieds.

    Conclusion
    1-10 loss (139-158)

    Things I learnt:
    • Kaauri have Sixth Sense level 2!
    • Biometric Visor 2 gives +3 to Discover rolls on Impersonators.
    • It is possible to get all four Classifieds in Countermeasures without using the opponents HVTs.
Things I could have done better:
    • Not taking out the viral Sniper certainly led to trouble. I could have used the Speculo, or either of the Cadmus to knock it out pretty harmlessly, but then they wouldn’t have been available to do Classifieds as easily.
    • I had planned to pair the Speculo with the Cadmus, as they back each other up really well, but in this game I just didn’t do that. For instance, I could have dropped my second Cadmus near my Speculo before the Kaauri got to it, which would have protected them both.

    Round Three – Quadrant Control
    Opponent: Melchior, Shasvastii
    Table: Downtown

    Quadrant Control
    • Dominate more Quadrants (2 per round)
    • Dominate the same number of Quadrants (1 per round)
    • Have your Datatracker in a Quadrant dominated by you (1 per round)
    • 1 Classified (1)

Unfortunately I didn't get a photo of this table. Here's a photo his excellent paint job:

My Classified was a Hacker WIP on an enemy trooper, which is easy peasy with a late game Cadmus targeting an unconscious trooper. I won the Lt roll and chose Deployment, taking the side with better tall buildings. My opponent very bravely also gave me the first turn, considering how strong going in Quadrant Control is.

    Deployment:

He put Sheskiin in the Jayth Haris on the far left, guarded by a couple Taighas and the Plasma Q drone. His HMG Q drone went on the right flank with a Taigha and an Ikadron. His Dr Worm hid in a central building, and he had a couple of camo markers hiding on buildings.

Although I was deploying second and going first, there still weren’t that many good attack avenues. My Q-drone went on a high rise in the middle with plenty of view over the board. The two Nox went with him. A Taigha and an Ikadron went on each flank. My Seed-Soldier FO I deployed out of Camo (so I could use him as the Datatracker) on a building on the right with Forward Deployment. One Speculo deployed to contest the far left quadrant, using her mine to block the plasma Q drone. I wanted to prevent Sheskiin from getting her quadrant, or at least having to abandon his right quadrant to get it.

Top of turn one – Good Shas

I sent my Speculo up to kill Dr Worm and hopefully sit in the far right Quadrant. The left Taigha ran up and knocked out his Ikadron without dying. My other orders were spent getting everyone nicely into zones.

Bottom of turn one – Evil Shas

His Taighas do not have any Regular Orders to prevent their Extremely Impetuous. This forces the two on the left/middle to run out and get killed by my Q-drone, and the mine triggers and knocks out the plasma Q-drone as well. He moves Sheskiin and her link up to the far left quadrant. His Caliban moves forward a bit and knocks my Q-drone unconscious.

It turns out my Speculo is in his DZ, so I don’t dominate his far quadrant and we each have two Quadrants, 2 points each thanks to having our Datatrackers in them.

    2-2

Top of turn two – Good Shas

My left Taigha turns the corner and Berserks into Sheskiin. They each deal a wound to get each other, which means Sheskiin isn’t damaged as she eats the wound from the Taigha with Protheion. I run the other on the right flank out to chain colt the opposing Taigha and the Q drone, but he dies without any success.

My M drone runs and kills the Caliban. My right Speculo crawls into the far right Quadrant. I drop both Cadmus, and they scatter into the far left Quadrant, I leave the Decoys scattered around as potential chest mines. Dr Worm repairs my Q drone, who then puts down one of the Jayth and I move into defensive positions.

Bottom of turn two - Evil Shas

Sheskiin decides not to stay in her far left quadrant as she probably can’t dominate it with the Speculo and the two Cadmus, so she just runs out at the Q-drone, running and shooting at it for 2-3 Orders before putting it unconscious.

I have three Quadrants this time, we each dominate with our Datatrackers, (3 for me, 1 for him)

    5-3

Top of turn three - Good Shas

If I can knock out Sheskiin, I can get the major win. I run the Ikadron at her, but with her Nanoscreen and Ph 15 I can’t get a wound on her with the flamethrower/pistol before she Engages. This lets me stand my Nox and Shrouded up to shoot her at close range, but after 5+ orders she’s still standing and the Ikadron is dead. I move my right Datatracker up to Secure the HVT on the right.

Bottom of turn three - Evil Shas

He wants to grab my close right Quadrant, so runs his Taigha up to attack my Datatracker but I manage to dodge survive until it ran out of orders. Then his Ikadron tries the same thing and gets into my zone, but I manage to dodge into HIS far right zone.

This ends with us having swapped quadrants, each dominating with our Datatrackers (2 points each).

    Conclusion
    7-5 minor win (167-160)

    Things I learnt:
    • Going first after deploying second isn’t totally out of the question. I couldn’t attack very effectively as then I would be stuck in his DZ, which turned out to be the case for my Speculo, costing me effectively 2 OP.
Things I could have done better:
    • Kill Sheskiin. I should have figured something out to get her, but thought I could lock her down with the Taigha and Q drone, but she can shoot her way out of anything.
    • I probably could have brought in a Cadmus or two on the first turn to get the points on the board, but if I hadn’t misjudged the Speculo’s position it wouldn’t have been necessary.
I really enjoyed this match and look forward to our rematch. His models were painted exquisitely and he had some great Taiga proxies.

    End of the first day

I had one loss which takes the pressure off as I know I can’t win the tournament. I really enjoyed my games and the experience of trying out Shasvastii so far. They have been a nice puzzle to figure out, the Taigha 6-6 movement is an amazing tool, but takes some getting used to. The Chain-colt with its small template is much harder to use than the large template Chain rifle I’m used it, but I’m getting there.

The evening was fun with a couple rounds of Hunger Games and lots of good chats. There was also another group playing Hunger Games, and I saw at least two rounds of TAG Deathmatch.

    Day Two

    Round Four – Furor Missile
    Opponent: Darkness, Ramah
    Table: Haqq complex

    Furor Missile

In this mission there are six consoles controlling Aleph orbital smart missile systems. These consoles can be activated by a B1 WIP from a specialist, or a B2 WIP from the Datatracker.

At the end of the third round, for each activated console you may allocate an automatic missile hit on ANY enemy trooper at DAM 14 AP+DA which ignores Total Immunity. This includes camo markers, Impersonator markers, and troopers Engaged in close combat.
    • Kill more Army Points before the end of the third game round (2)
    • Kill more Army Points with the Missiles at the end of the game (2)
    • Have more active Consoles (3)
    • Kill the enemy Datatracker before the end of the third game round (2)
    • Keep your Datatracker alive (1)

    Deployment:

My link team goes on the left flank, the Q drone takes a high vantage point in the middle.

His core link goes on the left building and the Mukhtar haris go on the right.

Top of turn one - Shas

I move the Taighas up to block the midfield and get ready to strike next turn. My Speculo muddles around on the right flank, not achieving much of anything if I remember correctly.

The link moves up, activating one of the consoles and knocking out the Ghulam sniper with Sheskiins B5 on 18s.

Bottom of turn one - Ramah

He uses the Ghulam smoke launcher to hide the Mukhtars, which move around and kill the Speculo and knock the Q drone unconscious. His Khawarij takes a shot at Sheskiin before going prone, which lets the Taigha dodge forward.

Top of turn two - Shas

The Taigha charges into the left Naffatun, knocking him unconscious and tanking the heavy flamethrower ARO. Now the corridor is clear for the link to charge up the board grabbing the middle and far left consoles and killing a Flash Bot, a second Naffatun, the Monstrucker, the Hortlak Chain of Command, the Ghulam LGL and the Ghulam Doctor. To add insult to injury, Sheskiin eats the Naffatun, putting her at 3 wounds in his DZ. The link takes defensive positions to prevent his Mukhtars from counterattacking.

I feel this turn demonstrates exactly the synergy of Taighas and the Sheskiin link. They were able to erode the defence and prevent midfield presence, and once the AROs were down she could storm into his DZ and shoot the whole backline, throwing out 5 dice on 21s.

Bottom of turn two - Ramah

A brutal position to start in, but at least he is not in Loss of Lieutenant, much to my surprise (I had assumed one of the Naffatuns was his Lt, but didn’t specifically ask. You have to say when your Lt dies, not just unconscious, as it becomes Public Information). His Mukhtars move into the midfield, snagging a console on the way and eating two combi rifle crits from my Nox, (but NWI, so still kickin’). A Nahab walks onto the board to give him an extra order next turn.

Top of turn three - Shas

So now my only goal is to deactivate his consoles so Sheskiin will survive the missiles at the end of the game. The Mukhtar Haris is actually a pretty tough nut to crack, with Mimetism, BS13 boarding shotguns/viral rifles, and NWI. I take a leaf out of Zapp Brannigan’s tactical advice, and send wave after wave of Nox troops at the Muhktar, but they all just die. My Taigha heads up the roof to kill the Khawarij, but they just look at each other intensely instead. I put Sheskiin into Suppressive Fire on a rooftop to be safe from the Muhktar.

I drop my Cadmus near the Nahab to KHD him to death, but whiff the rolls.

Bottom of turn three - Ramah

His Lt Khawarij leaps up heroically to get shots on Sheskiin, but is killed instead. The Muhktar Doc then runs out to activate a console, getting Isolated by the Nox Zapper.

I have 3 missile shots, and manage to kill two models, and Sheskiin luckily saves both her hits, and that’s the game.

    Conclusion
    10-0 major win (166-92)

    Things I learnt:
    • Hortlak have Mimetism and Blitzen.
    • Muhktar have Forward Deployment 1.
Things I could have done better:
    • I really could have used the Speculo better, I was a bit half-hearted about it. I was a bit worried he had a Hidden Tuareg which would pop out and shotgun my link, so had to spend a few orders getting him into a safe position, which sapped my Speculo’s attack ability.
    • I should have specifically asked after each Naffatun died if it was the Lt.
Overall a great opponent from Russia, and I look forward to our next match. Having Sheskiin run down the flank and kill six models and gain a wound did not feel great, and I applaud my opponent for keeping his cool as well as he did. Is this what Achilles feels like? At least he can’t complete objectives, unlike the Sheskiin link. I’ll need to get some more experience before deciding if that’s the style of play I want to keep making.

Round Five – Looting and Sabotaging
    Opponent: Lesh, Onyx
    Table: Downtown
    Looting and Sabotaging
    • For each remaining STR on your AC2 (1, up to 3)
    • For each STR removed on your opponents AC2 (1, up to 3)
    • Destroy the opponents AC2 (2)
    • Get more items out of the Panoplies (1)
    • One Classified (1)

I hadn’t yet managed to try this mission out, and had three plans. Plan A was to run Sheskiin and Victor Messer across the board, and use B3 D-Charges (thanks to having multiple models in CC) to blow up the AC2 in a single order. Plan B was for the Taigha DA to whittle the AC2 to death with Berserk. Plan C (my favourite) was for the Cadmus to drop, knock someone out with boarding shotgun but not kill them, and use Scavenger to pick up D-Charges.

He wins the Lt roll and takes Deployment. His AC2 is hidden behind the truck, and that building has great firelanes to everywhere.

    Deployment:

I put my Q drone on AC2 overwatch, with the Shrouded KHD pretending to be a Seed-Soldier (for the threat of chest mines), an Ikadron, and two Taigha guarding the area around the AC2. Dr Worm goes in the middle right to have an easy combi shot on the mainstreet, or to head right if need be. I put the link team on the building to the left, with the plan that they can head left or to the middle depending on the opportunities. I will regret this decision.

His Unidron sniper goes on the middle building with Dr Worm prone nearby, and the Q drone at the base. The rest of the link sits prone on a one storey building at the back of his DZ.

He cheekily puts his HVT on the far left, blocking the alleyway I was thinking of sending the link down. If I Sync with it, I drop from the link, so that will cost a couple orders and a Command Token to move through.

The main members of the link are effectively unassailable. I can see that his Lt is probably the Nexus Specialist Operative, but I can’t get to it nicely. I put the Speculo in front of the building, with the plan to smoke and then climb up to take out the Unidron sniper and Dr Worm. He counterdeploys with the Greif operator, putting it between my mine and his Unidron so it can’t trigger.

Top of turn one - Shas

The Taighas move up into cover, but can’t get into his half of the table without being seen by the Unidron sniper.

I decide to go ahead with the Speculo plan, revealing the Speculo to Discover-Shoot the Greif. He shoots back and dies, but knocks out my mine meant for the Unidron. I should have just put the mine on top of the truck, but I didn’t see that at the time. I then throw smoke, and we realise because of the sign hanging on the building I won’t be able to climb up in smoke. I abandon that plan, and go after the Q-drone, but the Noctifier reveals and I try to shoot it instead. After a few whiffed rolls I retreat, trying to shoot the helper bot (it’ll be able to Discover my Speculo, or trigger my mines). Unfortunately, he survives and dodges into cover. I brainfart and go into Suppressive Fire instead of Impersonating (I find Impersonating much better, you get 360 LoF, and often models fail their 1st Discover and can’t try again that turn). I put Marksmanship on the Q-drone. Not much of a first turn.

Bottom of turn one – Onyx

He runs the Helper bot to trigger my mine, and dies to Suppressive Fire. He then walks Ko Dali all the way around his DZ to get a shot into the back of the Speculo, putting her down but costing him a lot of orders to get there. His Noctifer recamos and he puts Marksmanship on the Q drone.

Top of turn two - Shas

Hmm. I can’t easily get Sheskiin into good ranges against his Unidron, Noctifer or Q-drone. Deploying this far on the flank was a bad plan. I try the Cadmus, dropping him in front of the building. I misjudge by a few millimetres, so waste an order moving into ZoC to put his Nexus Hacker unconscious. I then move out to shotgun the Unidron, and forgetting they have Dogged, leave him in LoF. The Unidron goes Dogged, and now the Cadmus has to fight an order to be able to total cover and Cybermask. He naturally loses the fight and goes unconscious as reinforcement of the lesson for next time. I don’t have any other great options, so spend a few orders moving the link and cautious moving across the left street, so I can try a turn three kamikaze run on the AC2.

Bottom of turn two - Onyx

I can’t recall this much of this turn. I think he moved Ko Dali and the Ikadron on the right up so they could strike at the right Panoply and my HVT next turn.

Top of turn three - Shas

Ok, so now I really have to get to the AC2 to get any points on the board. The Taigha on the right touches the Panoply and picks up a Nanopulsar (yay). Sheskiin moves up and kills the Noctifer, but loses a Nox to the missile blast. She then tries the Q-drone, but gets vaporised instead. It was a risk, and this time it did not pay off. Seeing that I couldn’t reasonably put any damage on the AC2 I just moved into defensive positions.

Bottom of turn three - Onyx

He couldn’t get my AC2, so he just went for the Panoplies and his Classified instead (Spotlighting my unconscious Cadmus, doubling the shame).

    Conclusion
    3-5 loss (96-292)

    Things I learnt:
    • Onyx get Greif Operators, and they only have combi rifles.
    • Unidron have Dogged, not Mimetism (that’s Dakinis)
    • Ko Dali has BS14 and Protheion 1. Also, at least one person takes the non-AD option (Mimetism and Forward Deployment 2)
Things I could have done better:
    • The Speculo plan was a fiasco. I should have put the mine on the truck to start with, and seeing the distance I should have just Spec Fired the smoke onto the building or abandoned it entirely.
    • The Cadmus movement was an entirely unnecessary mistake. He doesn’t have a Suppressive Fire weapon so there is exactly zero reasons for not having moved him back to total cover at the end of his move.
    • The link team deployment was poor. I should have put them in the middle so at least I had options.
My opponent was an excellent player and a pleasure to play against. He was one of the Latvians, another of whom I lost to in the final last year. This is starting to be a trend, and I look forward to finally beating one of them next year J

    Overall

So in the end I had two majors, one minor, and two losses. This put in me in 15th place, and my opponent in the last round came 9th. All of my matches were fun, pleasant, and competitive, which is all I can ask for! I had a great time playing with my opponents, and all rules disputes were sorted out in a quick and polite manner. The tournament was excellently run as I am coming to expect in Germany. I look forward to next year, and to seeing everyone at various tournaments throughout the year.

Shas was fun to play, but the Sheskiin paintrain was honestly a bit embarrassing when it worked. I don’t know if I want to keep repeating that experience. The Cadmus/Speculo are great fun, but eat up a lot of time in “what if” planning, and in a few of my games I went to my time which I find unusual these days.

Thanks for reading and I would love to hear your feedback.
