You could do with ping pong balls too for spheres.

That is something I am aware of. Nessus and vex architecture in general is pretty vertical. I’m limiting the height of most stuff to about 9” (with the exception of the main spire at 12”) so it’s not too hard to play on. I am also adding vines along the sides of the walls to act as ladders without breaking the immersion of the theme.

That is actually a really smart idea! Some of the spheres you come across in game are broken and hollowed out so this would be an easy alternative to that!

    (b'')b Glad I could help!

And bonus, those empty balls (giggity) can serve as nice cover.

Small update. It’s 14 degrees F / -10 C so the joint compound is taking forever to dry. Brought everything inside to dry faster and in the mean time I’m getting my greeble on!

Joint compound finally dried in this cold weather lol. Used a wire brush to create the look of sandstone/desert rock, since that’s the closest look Nessus geology is. Added some sand to the flat surfaces for texture, caulked out the outline where vex pools will be and also tested out some colors on another rock formation. Using gesso as a primer and cheap liquitex acrylic through the airbrush.

Oh and another thing, how in Odins name will I sculpt out the cave rock now!?

    Looking good so far.
Did you apply the gesso manually or did you spray it?

Thanks guys! I’m having a blast putting this board together :)

    I applied it by hand.

What do you mean? Space problems? Technique problems?

You know how every table generally has a center piece the table is built around? Well my entire table is a center piece it feels like lol. Though I am starting to run into an issue. I have 4 large structures done and I’m concerned the layout might get cluttered. I’ll have to set up a game mat and see how much room I have.

Yeah space problems. Don’t know how I’ll get in there to sculpt everything.

Recruit someone with tiny hands? Unglue the base (or cut the foam at the bottom or top), model the details, then glue back, so you only have to hide the joint in easy places (near ground, or rarely visible near ceiling)? Next time I'm sure you will model, and do at least a rough paint pass, the hard to reach parts before closing "things". *wink*

How tall is the cave anyway? 6 inches (15 cm)? 8 (20)?

I have somewhat of a plan to make it work lol. Inside height is 8” and outside is 10”

There is a kickstarter that just launched that has stamps and rollers that are for styrofoam. That might help.

I expect a Megalodron's modification to look like the Undying Mind emerging from that portal...

I can’t find the Kickstarter, you got a link?

It’s funny you should mention that, I almost painted my CA to be vex themed since the new charontids head gear looks like a praetorian Minotaur lol.

Expanding spray foam turned out to be a terrible working medium. All the joint compound cracked on it and when trying to sculpt it into a layered rock pattern it would just chip off. So back a couple of steps and doing this right!
