Hey guys, I’m having a great time list building in Ramah and I’ve come across Wild Bill. He is my favorite hero in Aristeia and I was shocked and elated that Haqqislam got him. So, as you can tell, I want to build a list for him, but I’m at a bit of a loss.

How have you incorporated the legend into your list and effectively brought him to bear on your opponents?

    And, list sharing is welcomed.

I'm playing QK, not Ramah, but nowadays I rarely leave home without this guy, either in a Janissary core to cheapen it slightly and bring MML2 to the mid-range, or as Kaplans' big brother to hit anything without Mimetism on solid 16s. He is also pretty good on his own, able to leverage his run-and-gun MOV, and a 3B Rifle and MULTI pistols are nothing to scoff at. When the range is right, feel free to dislodge some annoying ARO pieces, even the ODD users will be hit on 10s, 13s if you're in the link. Squishy NWI models from Steel Phalanx drop like flies. That said, he is a squishy NWI piece himself with no shock immunity or visual modifiers, so he is a glass cannon-type of character. I use him in Kaplans Haris suicide squad to rampage through the midfield all the way to the enemy DZ. Oftentimes it's not worth bringing a doctor with him as in the reactive turn the opponent will make sure to kill him dead, so I try to make the most out of his active turn. As of the lists, I want to try this one:

Kaplan Spitfire may sometimes be changed to regular Haris with MSR for some DZ protection and long-range fire support, but then Bill would be more of a midfield skirmisher to clear the path for specialists. I always use the Rifle variant as the Contender is way too low-burst when you desperately need some active turn goodness. Also, don't forget that his MULTI pistols have the stun mode so if you have something scary like Rasail Boarding Team heading your way, you may want to stun them instead of shooting them (and I believe it also benefits from Fatality L1, even though it's the Stun ammo; I haven't found any restrictions as to whether the non-lethal ammunition can have the damage boost).

    *Raises eyebrow*

    That sounds like a contradiction.

    *Checks points cost*

27 for a unit with NWI

    *facepalm*
    *shakes head in disapprovement*

Infinity has always been a game with a high lethality where things tend to die fast when shot at. One wound is the norm between troops with costs ranging from 5 to 35 pts. NWI is costly and a luxury for any unit. Due to the lethality of firearms in this game even a HI in the open can be fragged with a single full burst of a HMG or even a humble combi rifle depending on luck. Having NWI just makes that troop "less squishy" than the rest of troops with just a single wound. NWI is a powerful skill that was never meant to be complemented with shock immunity, a proof of that is that during a long time such combination has been avoided in the designs. It was only when designers tried to get some kind of bio like non HI for Aleph and cheaper HIs for YuJing that this option was explored. Unfortunately that has opened the Pandora box and it seems more units have started appearing with such atrocious combination of skills…

The point is shock immunity + NWI no HI units and HSN3 reworked simbiontarmors are just aberrations, not the norm. Therefore a unit that can take a wound from normal firearms and continue fighting is anything but squishy. It's not correct to state Wild Bill is a glass cannon when in your list there's nothing sturdier than him. A glass cannon would be a 1 wounder unit in the range of 35 pts or beyond with a high attack potential. In your list that Djanbazan HMG could barely classify as such.

No shock Immunity or any Immunity for that matter does make such NWI models squishy in my opinion. It is way too easy to come across a shock-equipped unit these days.

I think in the current meta, shock immunity sort of became mandatory/necessary for such units. Again, Bill has no shock immunity to power up NWI. Shock rounds are rather common.

Djanbazan has higher armor, shock immunity, smoke coverage (well not on his own but if you have a Yuan Yuan covering him which I always have), and he can stay on his side of the table while doing all the killing. Due to that he has less chance to expose himself and doesn't need to be up close and personal to be at max efficiency, unlike Wild Bill whose effective range bands end at 16". So by saying Bill is a glass cannon, I meant it in terms of his playstyle and not just his stats. (then again, maybe it's just that my idea of a glass cannon playstyle is different from that of other players)

Wild Bill can't just slot into a Ramah list, die to his highly restricted link options. Most Ramah lists won't be running a Jannisary core, and they can't haris. I'd consider this in a limited insertion environment, but only with a killy/objective room mission.

But that doesn't really take advantage of the strengths of Ramah. For a more conventional missions, this is also a legal "janissary" core, and has the advantage of everyone having a 6-X movement. The extra mobility on everyone and durability on the specialist make it more suited to missions that still have a fair amount of button-pushing. Again, though, this is a very expensive team that I probably wouldn't touch outside of LI.

Okay, so it seems Wild Bill is having a hard time fitting into a RTF list. I’m glad I’m not the only one, because this is in part why I made this thread.

So, Tarik seems like he could fit in with Bill, but Captain Haqqislam is even more expensive than Janissarys. And as much as I like the Janissary Akbar Doctor, I feel I am paying too much for what I am getting. I can go with the Janissary HMG or ML, but I don’t know. This leaves Hortlaks. What do you guys think of a min core, two Hortlaks and Bill?

I haven't had any experience playing Ramah, but IIRC Hortlaks can have either Sniper Rifle or SMG. IMO the link would need some mid-range 8-24" weapons to be more survivable, although a Sniper Hortlak seems pretty solid for the long-range duty, especially with Mimetism. So if you have one sniper, one SMG, and the Rifle Bill, such mini-core technically covers all the range bands. And on tables with a denser terrain, I can imagine it being very effective. It also doesn't put too many eggs in one basket, eating only 1 SWC at most so you can have some spitfire/hmg big game hunters outside of that link team. Just keep in mind that there can only be one core fireteam in your roster.
