So I was attending German Masters last week, a Satellite with 60+ players and I decided to bring my favourite oppressive asian supremacists fascist force; the ISS.
I came out with a 5th place and while it stings a little, because I personally always aim for top 3, I was glad that I at least came out undefeated. :)

    The missions where the following:
    1. Countermeasures
    2. Show of Force
    3. Transmission Matrix

So list A is pretty much my staple ISS list. It's a running formula I've tested many times now and the Crane Rank core with the Rui Shi + Dakini, is pretty much the best toolbox list I feel I can get out ISS. The only variation on this kind of list is replacing the Dakini with another Kuang Shit and the Celestial Guard Lt. with a Pheasant Rank but that is only done if I have a "bad feeling" about assassins. Otherwise the premise of the list is quite simple. Use the core to provide Supportware and/or smoke to the Rui Shi and the Dakini. Rush your opponent with the Dakini and use the Rui Shi as a second wave then consider moving the core, no sooner than on turn 2 or 3.

List B is a list that I actually hate and only resentfully brought along, as I don't like the volatile nature of constructing a list based on 8 Kuang Shi's but I couldn't really think of anything more creative against a Kamau Sniper counter, or smoke based armies. Typically I would bring a list centered around Su Jian's as my second list.

    1st round.
    Opponent: MSP
    Army: Vanilla Tohaa
List used: List A, Datatracker was the Sophotech

    Short summary:
So this mission was well within my comfortzone, as Countermeasures is basically just another version of Highly Classified, which ISS simply excels at, on the same level as Haqqislam. In terms of killing, not much happened, as the river was quite restrictive to the movement and my opponent seemed reluctant to move out of his DZ, this was much on to my advantage, as I had much better chances to complete objectives, as many of them where based on hacking, HI's or Engineering.
Even if the game wasn't very eventful, it was nice to secure a safe position with a major victory.

    Result: 10 - 4

    2nd round.

    Opponent: Moxtron
    Army: Qapu Khalqi
List used: List A, Datatracker was Crane Rank

    Short summary:
Show of Force... one of the most boring missions in the game for me. xD
Anyways, my opponent used a list involving a Sekban Haris, Ghulam Core and Scarface. Much to my surprise there was zero Yuan Yuan's in his lists, which caught me off guard a little, as I was counter deploying against exactly that. My opponent had first turn and quickly launched his Scarface towards my DZ, treating him like the one shot missile that he is. Once he was just over half way the table, he decided to gunfight with the Dakini HMG, at which point I decided to gamble and declare Engage, revealing my Ninja (who'm I had counter deployed for that purpose). My opponent decided to throw all dice against the Dakini and handle the Ninja later but since he was just half an inch over 24", the Dakini had no difficulty beating Scarface in FtF, which also lost Scarface a point of Str. My opponent had anticipated this move, however, so he activated his nearby Al Hawwa AHD. Despite multiple efforts, my Ninja successfully declared Reset and to make matters worse, once the Ninja was Imm-1, she actually survived the first CC-attack made by Scarface, so he had to hack the Ninja yet again, as the Ninja had no trouble resetting. Once the Ninja was finally down, she had wasted more orders for my opponent than I could had ever dreamed of and once Scarface was free, he decided to gunfight the Crane Rank who was covering a lane, which put an end to Scarface, as the Crane rank rolled very high numbers but always below 16's.
After that, I was ready to pick apart my opponent's link team with the Dakini, as Supportware + Mimitism simply pacifies the Ghulam link and the Dakini + Rui Shi just had tons of orders to kill what ever was within reach. I ended my 2nd turn claiming the middle point, as I knew he was in Retreat! by the beginning of his 3rd turn, securing a major victory.

    Result: 7 - 0

    3rd round
    [IMG][IMG]
    Opponent: Aneximander
    Army: Caledonia Highlander Army
List used: List B, Datatracker was the Sophotech

    Short summary:
Ah... a 20 regular order Caledonia list with 3 Infiltrating SAS + 1 Uxia, everything with Chain Rifles, Greys and McMurder to boot. This is one of the most annoying matchups for ISS. Even though ISS is pretty comfortable against smoke, many of their key attack pieces are either low ARM units or REM's, which makes it terrible when every single corner is covered with Chain Rifles.
To make it even better, my opponent was fully dressed in Highlander garments, and even had full war paint on, which was amazing.
My opponent had me by the balls at the entire 1st round, and being that ISS have almost nothing that can ARO with MOD's, the Grey had a field trip, with his BS16 AP HMG and was busy making mockery of my army. When he ran out of orders on his 1 Combat Group, he had already killed the Designated Target (Grey was Datatracker) and now 3 points ahead. However, two crucial errors happened just at the last moment. He was careless with the moment of his Grey for just a single order, which meant he was facing multiple ARO's, one of which he lost, which meant he now lost a major attack piece. The second grave mistake was that he moved carelessly with McMurder, which resulted in McMurder eating multiple Chain Rifles, none of which he had any luck tanking. This was a massive turning point, because the following round, I could take my wounded Hsien and remove both of the Cateran Snipers, with smoke from my only surviving CG Handler and repair my unconscious Rui Shi. The restored Rui Shi now could take an open flank and make sure to remove a High Lander that was guarding one of the scoring zones, meaning I had more zones than him. With much effort, I managed to deal with Uxia and 2 of her friends, which basically costed me all of my chaff (although Uxia was easily despatched, as a Kuang Shi critted an Intuitive Attack against her). My opponent felt he was out of options, so he decided he wanted to pressure me, by cutting the game short via Retreat!, so decided to suicide most of his army, by attacking many of my models in the open. With an incoming Retreat! I had to hurry with what remained of my army. Due to carnage made by Rui Shi (who died heroically), the flank was open for the Sophotech to rush towards the Designated Target and kill him, which secured me the game. I was left with trying for a major victory, however my Hacker failed his WIP roll and ran out orders (which bought him a ticket for "re-education" at the Kaung Shi camp... Stupid Zhanyings...).

    Result: 7 - 3

    4th Round
    [IMG]

    Opponent: Worstcase
    Army: Vanilla Nomads
List used: List A, Datatracker was the Sophotech

    Short summary:
A really exciting and partly frustrating game. The Frustrating part was mostly due to the terrain, since it had those corners, which bended inwards on the corners. This was a source of great frustration to both of us, since we moved our models in such a way that we forgot about the corner, meaning many times we moved our models and placed it traditionally against the corner, but due to the corners now going inwards, or models suddenly had no cover, as less than 30% of the model was covered. This mean the judge was called over a couple of times, since it was actually really difficult to tell wheter or not there was cover, which was a bit source of frustration for both of us.
Regardless, I started out strong and Worstcase had some units misplaced, which my Dakini took care of, and my Ninja started out with capping two civillians down to my DZ and soon I was ahead 8-0. Despite the pressure, Worstcase made an excellent play on his 2nd round, spotting an exposed flank (left side was a massive kill zone and not much was left standing on both sides), which he sent 2 of his surviving puppetbots towards my DZ and even if I felt a bit unlucky with the rolls, luck really didn't have much to do with the fact that he made an excellent decision and killed both my datatracker and ninja, that were both synchronized with the civillians, resetting the score to 0-0 and having 2 puppetbots in my DZ, guarding the civillians.
From this point on though, the Meme- God of Kek just took over the game. My Crane Rank core approached the puppetbots and started raining down spitfire shots and his puppetbots just tanked every single save, several rounds in a row. It took 6 orders of the Crane Rank, linked, no cover, to kill the puppetbot and left me with a single order to synchronize with a civillian in the exclusion zone, with my Celestial Guard, leaving me with 1-0 score, rather than the potential of 6-0, if the puppet bot had died and left me able to synchronize with the civillians in the DZ.
However, it turned turned out that I was about to pull the excact same levels of meme-tier luck.
Worstcase had just enough orders in his second group to secure a civillian in the exclusion zone with his Moran, so he only needed to kill my Celestial Guard holding a civillian. Worstcase took his Morlock and threw smoke on top of the Celestial Guard, hiding inside a corner, and approached with his, so far, passive Intruder HMG. On the crucial moment of Surprise BS Attack, the Intruder was not able to claim cover, which meant the Celestial Guard was shooting back on 2's... Which of course he does and promptly crits the Intruder dead. Shortly after, he sent in the Morlock who provided the smoke to dispatch of the Celestial Guard in CC. The Celestial Guard was rolling on 11's due to MA1, using a Knife, which is exactly what the Celestial Guard rolls and instagibs the Morlock (and this may perhaps be the first time in my life that I've ever been gratefull for the CC tax on YJ). After swallowing a very bitter pill, Worstcase had nothing left to use but his Lt. Interventor, so he did exactly that and after using several orders to reach the Celestial Guard, he was forced to engage in CC with Celestial Guard. 3 Orders later the Celestial Guard was still standing, as he had deflected every single successful CC attack, ending the game in a tie (and perhaps I've now found a potential Ninja candidate).

    Result: 1 - 1

How do you use list B to counter a Kamau? Nimbus + HMG?

My first instinct was that these lists would really struggle going second and that seemed to be the case in game 3. Glad to see it's not a fatal flaw.

Well done! 5th out of 60 is not a bad placing at all.

It always makes me surprised, since whenever I see the ISS tourney list fits my taste; Its always quite similar, guess thats the staple thing.

A really nice write-up. As far I could say Hsien Haris is not a common view; were you up to take out List 2 when facing OSS, VIRD? Or were you expecting O12 when preparing the tourney?

    congratz on you placing 5th!
In all honesty, I hate to see lists that bring more than 13 units.
But I love that you did so well, showing that Yu Jing can get shit done.
Going to Germany for Feuror Teutonic tournament, perhaps see you there :)

Well done, looking forward for the last 2 reports!

As for your 2nd list, if you hate that one and would rather go for the su-jian and less kuang-shi if possible, have you considered using coordinated orders with bounty hunters akrylat kanone+ su-jian's panzerfaust (or spitfire if in range) + whatever to deal with the kamau? You'd end up with something like this:

    List B
    ──────────────────────────────────────────────────

    GROUP 1[IMG] [IMG] [IMG]10 [IMG]5
    SÙ-JIÀN Spitfire, Light Flamethrower, Panzerfaust / Heavy Pistol, Knife. (2 | 59)
    BOUNTY HUNTER Submachine Gun, Akrylat-Kanone / Breaker Pistol, Knife. (0 | 12)
    BOUNTY HUNTER Submachine Gun, Akrylat-Kanone / Breaker Pistol, Knife. (0 | 12)
    RUI SHI Spitfire / Electric Pulse. (1 | 20)
CELESTIAL GUARD (Kuang Shi Control Device) Combi Rifle + Light Smoke Grenade Launcher / Pistol, Knife. (0.5 | 13)
KUANG SHI Chain Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 5)

    DAKINI Tacbot HMG / Electric Pulse. (1 | 21)
    RUI SHI Spitfire / Electric Pulse. (1 | 20)
CELESTIAL GUARD Hacker (Hacking Device) Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0.5 | 21)
CELESTIAL GUARD Lieutenant Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 13)
CELESTIAL GUARD Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 13)
CSU (Specialist Operative) Rifle + Light Shotgun, Nanopulser / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 12)
CSU Boarding Shotgun, Nanopulser / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 11)
    SOPHOTECT Combi Rifle, D-Charges / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 31)
    YUDBOT Electric Pulse. (0 | 3)
    YUDBOT Electric Pulse. (0 | 3)
CHAĪYÌ Yaókòng Flash Pulse, Sniffer / Electric Pulse. (0 | 8)
    WARCOR (360º Visor) Flash Pulse / Stun Pistol, Knife. (0 | 3)

    6 SWC | 300 Points

No hsien, but you still have 2 rui-shi to deal with smoke tossers and brute force the kamau if needs be, and if there are no need for coordinated orders the bounty hunters can be used as AROs and threaten the like of Mc Murder with their akrylat kanone.

Just an idea on the fly. Coordinated bounty hunters have done great things for me, and together with CSU they enable spammy ISS lists without going overboard on kuang-shis.

Yes, quite simply. Nothing fancy but it's +64% chance to remove the Kamau entirely, while only having a 10% chance to suffer a wound and 3% to go unconscious in return.

Well, depends on your outlook, I took 2nd turn 4/5 games. Gunning for an ARO list in ISS is, in my opinion, a losers game so you have to rethink your ARO-phase a bit. Like the standard Flash Pulses to cover some lanes, have a Kuang Shi and CSU on every single corner with Shotguns/DTW and Sixth Sense to boot. Also, one needs to have the stones to use the Crane/Hsien as ARO pieces, as long as they don't cover an irrisponsible amount of areas, so have them cover a good lane and drop them back to safety, once the 1st wound is suffered, this plus the fact that you have a high order count, is to ensure that you can stand to take a hit, while still having plenty of orders to fight with.

The tie on 4th game. Quite litterally. If that was a minor (the 4th game), then I would have had 12 points and would face off with Snakenborg and even if I lost against him in the finals, 12 points would still be enough to get 2nd place, as I would had beaten the guy who got 2nd place with more objective points, and should I had faced Snakenborg and won, it would had been 1st place.

Very smoke heavy armies, like CHA or annoying ARO pieces like VIRD/ACON. I have honestly no idea what drove me to take List B on my final game, other than perhaps I thought the Ninja would had been a bit of a waste due to the Exclusion Zone, but then again, the Ninja did fine in Rescue, where there was an Exclusive Zone so.. xD

I'm in queue for Furor Teutonics and I'm very much hoping for the best! xD
Would love to chat, as I love the German players, they are very friendly and good players! :)

@Sedral I really love that list, and enjoy the input. I actually really want to take a look at that. Thanks for the inspiration! :)

Thanks for the report. Very good to read and good to see, that some shit will happen not only to casual gamers but to top tier games also (I mean the soon to be a Ninja CG). I like ISS a lot. Your first list is indeed something I run also in a similar way. The second one is very special, but I like the unusual Haris.

And good to see, that could not beat worstcase ... a famous player in germany. Not that I know him personaly, but I hear a lot of him in some local podcast/forum - I think he´s a very strong opponent.
