Howdy Forums, long time no see.

I’m attending a narrative event in the near future and due to work and life haven’t gotten to play test my lists as much as I would like. So, I’m here to ask for your best Varuna list using Soldier of Fortune, and 12xp specop rules. I’m trying to keep my picks to ForCo, and would love to bring Valkyrie in particular.

McMurrough is always a very popular choice for SoF missions, and for good reason. He synergies with PanO in particular very well, he fills a lot of gaps left by the nature of the army (CQB, Smoke, DTW.... ect.)

Agreed with Mike that Close Combat, Smoke and Direct Template Weapons are the weak points of VIRD that Mercs can fill very well.

McMurrough's also nice because he can attack with speed and some durability, which VIRD is traditionally pretty bad at.

Valkyrie's not a bad option since she certainly lends some close quarter combat ability and staying power to the mix.

Any idea what the missions will be? Spec Ops is a great opportunity too... You can supercharge your defense with a ludicrous Burst 2, high-WIP Jammer, add Minelayer to your defense, or save on Hackers/support choices. If you want more firepower too, ODD + Fuerbach in a link team is insanely good. PanO got extremely lucky as far as Spec Ops is concerned.

The missions will all be customized, but will emphasize a lot of WIP roles. Unfortunately I don’t have any models to even proxy McMurder with. Sr. Massacre I do have though and he ticks a lot of the same boxes.

Sort of, PanO gets a lot more use out of smoke than eclipse. Several Yan-Yans are also worth looking into in that case.
If the missions are objective heavy than I suggest bringing the usual Varuna soup of 2/3 Zulu specialists, EB specialist, Patsy/kamau haris, and Kamau/fusilier core

Yuans Yuans are tempting, but...I kinda feel like a linked Kamau MSV2 through smoke would be a negative play experience for a lot of folks. I’m kinda tempted to bring an HD+ so I can stick white noise on a bulleteer and then either Valkyrie or Massacre since I have their models.

If the format has Mercs, Spec Ops and custom missions, I don't think "MSV2 smoke shoot" is going to be the problem for negative play experiences :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I think the YY are better for the Impetuous, templates and smoke cover than for MSV2 + smoke shoot.

Noone's likely to outshoot an active turn Kamau Sniper anyway, so whether there's smoke or no smoke probably isn't a huge deciding factor. So I think YY are there for their attack capability, and the ability to actually maneuver or capture objectives without having to kill everything in sight.

I suppose it could be, though I’ve the last event like this I attended I listened to a podcast breakdown afterwards complain about my force tabling another guy as being too ‘try hard’ for a narrative event. Ironically that game had low vis terrain my Kamau took advantage of. Maybe I’m letting that stick in my craw too much.

Anyways, working list with a sole yuan yuan. I’m going to redo the specop to have a jammer as well but I’m on mobile at it’s a pain to do right now.

yeah I wouldn't worry too much about what one other person might say – regardless of their platform.
The way the game is structured there shouldn't be any real difference between a competitive list and a narrative list. I don't know where the line of thought comes from that a "narrative list" is synonymous with a bad list.

Recreating a 40k force org chart in Infinity maybe? From what I saw it’s mostly bringing units like Bolt/Marauder/Moira full cores or center a list on a something like an SML and a bunch of FOs.

Don't let someone's arbitrary idea about how the game should be played make you feel bad.

In my mind, shit talking someone's list in a podcast is a much greater "negative play experience" than facing an opponent who brought a decent list. The first is bad behavior. The second is how I'd expect my opponent to play the game.

Obviously you're the one who has to live with your local meta... Not us... But I'd consider giving them input on how to beat your list, rather than playing a weaker game so they can feel better about themselves. There's a lot to be said for bringing someone up to your level.
