    Hey everyone,
I've put some thought into building strong Haqq lists, and one place I always seem to falter is with good ARO pieces, especially against enemies who come packing lots of visual mods (I play exclusively against Ariadna camo spam). I take the Lasiq viral sniper every game I play, but I often find that the lone sniper is not enough to prevent enemy pushes into the mid-field, as she often gets out-dueled by dedicated enemy snipers or attacking pieces. What ARO pieces work for you guys? I've tried the Hafza rocket launcher to try to surprise my opponent, but one shot at -6 (cover+mimetism) just isn't very good. Now I'm thinking of the Hortlak sniper, as adding my own visual mod while negating theirs seems pretty solid to me despite the high cost. Any thoughts?

First off, ARO pieces are like sex toys, anything can be one if you try hard enough.

Moving on, the purpose of an ARO piece is to delay your opponent and force him to waste orders not to win firefights and kill everything. Assume everything you leave out to ARO will likely die.

Positioning is key, it might be tempting to leave them out with a good view of the whole board but that's just feeding them to your opponent. Instead have them watching key approaches and firelanes, or objectives. Make it so your opponent has to move their attack pieces to engage your AROs before they send their specialists in.

Haqq excels at cheap annoying ARO pieces, Daylami with panzerfausts are a classic as they're dirt cheap and will slow down your opponent as they can't choose to ignore them and risk an unopposed AP+EXP attack.

Ghazis are another classic, move them up and keep them out of LoF for an annoying Jammer bubble your opponent has to dig out.

Anything in Suppression with some <16" firelanes to watch over becomes a lot less trivial for your opponent to take out. Lasiq Viral rifles in particular are pretty tasty due to Mimetism and that X-Visor ignoring the range penalty out to 24".

A well placed Tuareg can wipe out an entire Fireteam with a well place shotgun blast. They're not primarily an ARO piece but if the opportunity arises...

Snipers aren't necessarily ARO pieces by default, they're your flexible option. In your Active turn they're outranging everything except other snipers, but in reactive I'd only risk leaving them dangling if you've eliminated most of your opponent's heavy firepower already.

Fanous REM is a less obvious, but pretty useful ARO option.
    • Flashpulse is optimal (+3) up to 24", and less good (-3) from 24" to 48".
    • Being a Technical weapon, it doesn't use BS, but WIP... which is 13, so basic chance to hit is on par with, say, a Janissary.
    • Mimetism is included.
    • And all that in a package costing mere 8pts (assuming you already have a TAG or any hacker in your list!)
    • Can be buffed to Burst 2 in ARO by a Hacker, but usually I wouldn't bother spending Orders on that.

Just Daylami...dirt cheap, dangerous AP+EXP and you lose no orders, when they get shot. Layer that with one or two other strong ARO options and you should be good. I prefer Djanbazan Sniper or the Azrail with Feuerbach.

'Hard' long-range ARO pieces are not necessarily essential to winning a game. Haqq can run one of the game's best short-range ARO defences, where every space approaching your deployment zone is simultaneously covered by a flamethrower or chain rifle, and a jammer zone.

If longer-range defence is absolutely essential, a total reaction bot with a monstrucker hanging around behind it is serviceable - I usually have one in most of my lists, but I'm pretty loathe to risk putting it out watching any kind of long firelanes. Typically it just represents a free kill for my opponent. It's much more useful as the game goes longer and the things that can contest it get surgically eliminated.

Also to note: if you're just looking to delay and soak orders from enemy warband models and big pieces moving toward you, you can't go past a 3pt warcor and a 10pt libertos minelayer.

I really like aggressive ARO and usually in vanilla Haqq I use Shihab with the support of Lasqa VSR and Daylamis with a Warcor. Depending on the enemy I sometimes also use Djanbazan HMG for AROing duty. And everything with good range weapons, if I really want to play it risky and funny and if enemy deployed their attack pieces to visible ;)
I also played a bit with Hafza HRL and few times he managed to surprise my enemies, yet usually I roll poorly with his rocket attacks ;) :D
I even used plain Ghulam ML as an ARO guy and he can be good. In my RTF armylist he sometimes stay in back with Shihab, while the Khawarij link advances, and they both are defending my deployment zone.

Also interesting are minelayers to slow down enemies, Muyibs with E-Maulers for tougher adversaries. And guys like Liberto. And also Ghazis ofcourse.

About the different choices, I try to give everyone a chance and I was using Zhayedan sniper a bit. He did good job, yet he was replaced with Knauf - a very nice option with good BS, Mimetism, MSV and very deadly weapon - DA + Shock. All those NVI Aleph guys don't like him ;) Also remember about Le Muet - also a tough guy who can be hard to be taken out, especially by Ariadna, since his ODD won't be countered my MSVs.

I also had a time when I was using our fatties on regular basis, one whole season of our league. And they also can be nasty - Azra'il Feuerbach or Fasid HRL can be devastating, while very tough and resilient. Especiall with a doctor plus close by.
In one 350pts tournament I managed to take all the 4 different fatties, I especially used Tarik rifle to get that +1 SWC and it was really funny. 2 Azra'ils, 2 Fasids, Tarik, Janissaire Akbar, 2 Barids (KHD + AHD), Farzan CoC and Krakot. I managed to win 2 of 3 battles, and learned to appreciate Fasid's Sixth Sense. The HRL guy withstood a bunch of close range attacks of Guarda de Assaulto with his Auxbot and only was wounded. And in my active turn I killed the Auxbot with HMG Fasid and then the wounded HRL Fassy destroyed Guarda in one beautiful burst of his AP SMG ;) And in next reactive turn the same Fassy HRL was attacked by Drakios and killed it with a Shocking crit...
Sorry for this bit offtopic post, but it was a great, bloody battle ;)
Sadly no one was painted except Farzan, who was hidden in this photo ;)

I like "fatties" to describe all the S 5 Haqqislam guys, very fitting. Do you find that the mercenary snipers are efficient in Haqqislam? I was thinking of using Le Muet myself, but he's quite expensive.

Speaking of sniper ARO, in my games the Hortlak always did a great job: mimetism, HI, MSV. Overall it's a great piece with a moderate cost, that can scare more than a foe

Yeah, Hortlak Snipers are great for ARO duty.
The other honorable mention is, of course, Ayyar Sniper. It's your choice , wheather you want to set him up as 3 Daylami, 3 Snipers, FOs, a couple of Missile Launchers... You decide what your opponent is going to think. Is he in your -3 Range, do you pose a template threat? Posdibilities are endless!

Bonus points if you set up Ayyar as a couple of Govad MLs and place the actual Govad ML in Holoecho range :P

Most of the cheap options have already been mentioned before, but also look at the Al Fasid HRL. Its also has a Sub-machinegun which lets go into suppressing fire. The suppressing fire doesn't work on the HRL, but you get the choice of suppressing fire SubM or HRL when you ARO. Added Benefit is the BS13, HI ARM & multiwound. Makes for a tough piece to knock out.

I know your main problem are visual mods, Check out the new Hortlaks, you can pull the same tactic as above, but for a lot less points with an added benefits of MSV1 and mistime. The armor drops a bit, and the long range aro weapon is Disposable(2). To me its a coin toss if EM2 is better than fire.

I personally find that the Lasiq Sniper is a target and rarely lasts long, but the standard Lasiq tend to get overlooked and the x-visor is overlooked. Added benefit of being able to go into suppressing fire with 0 modifier at 24 inches.

So you're able to go into suppressive fire with one weapon (SMG) then shoo tin ARO with another? I imagine the B wouldn't apply, but would you still use the suppressive fire rangebands and get the -3 to enemy roll modifier with the HRL?

No, using the HRL will cancel the Suppressive Fire state so you'll use HRL rangebands at burst 1.

It's still a nice option should someone try to shoot the Fasid from >24" though.

@JudgeDee7 Basically you give your opponent a bad choice, either -3 mod with an opponent at -3 BS and full B (under 24"), or no mod and your opponent at +3 & 1B (over 24"). Giving your opponent bad choices is a solid tactic.

In the expensive side of things, I use Shihab, Lasiq, HRL (Muyib or Hafza, depending). On the cheaper side, solo Ghulam panzerfaust or sniper and Daylami are also pretty annoying.

Long range AROs? I like stuff that can take a licking and keep on ticking as ARO pieces, or stuff that can't but I don't mind dying, or stuff that will definitely win the ftf i.e. linked ARO pieces generally.

Inevitably if your ARO piece isn't linked you will get sprayed by a linked HMG, lose the face to face, and be forced to take a couple of ARM saves. If you have a decent ARM and a couple of W though, that's not so bad, you can always drop into cover, or stay in place if you want to remain a problem. So in Haqq, that inevitably means Janissaries, or a S5 HI in a pinch. Those options are expensive but often quite strong.

Daylami are like that but are much more likely to die. They are cheap though, so no big deal. Disposable and not a big loss, not likely to do much other than be a slight delay, but often that's all you need. If your opponent has stopped to shoot a couple of Daylami with their link, that's two second Moves that they would have had they don't now have, essentially a full order. Often one order is a big difference.

Of course, if you're taking links, then you want to be winning the FTF so your link isn't getting broken down. Govad Missile Launcher is great for this; MSV1 and SSL2 covereth a multitude of sins. Ghulams with Missile Launchers are nasty enough to kill whatever is shooting at them and if they die not the end of the world, bit of an overlap with option two there. Janissary MLs are the cream of the crop IMO, tough, nasty ARO, very hard hitting and very survivable.

Of course this is all long range. Midrange I like Mukhtar Haris' and Hunzakuts on Suppression and what have you, and up close anything with mines and/or templates is ace, Ghazi are of course the king of the ZoC ARO.

Try the Tuareg sniper. Hold your ARO with her her until your opponent is almost out of orders , in a position where he has to make a difficult choice , or can’t retaliate easily.

then take a couple shots. If she survives, go aggressive with her in your active turn. Place a mine, re camo.

She can be very fun and handy , but I think you have to cut something else to make room for her.

That guy saved my games in QK more times than I can count. The linked HRL with a holo-projector is an auto-include for me on most of the games.

I tried using an Azra'il recently but he sadly never got the chance to shoot anything, and it's enough to throw a smoke grenade and do an objective right in front of him. So a Djanbazan sniper just may be worth taking over an Azra'il, even though the miniature itself is incredible.

I am also considering fielding a full Core of Kaplans with an MSR profile doing the ARO thing, ready to die and be replaced by Leila Sharif before venturing towards the objectives.

    Hello,

as probably someone told you before, Vainilla hasn't the best ARO pieces in Game, if we spoke in durability and long range terms, but indeed we have a lot of "ARO pieces".

We should be realistic on what ARO means in Vainilla... And that is: the way to delay your rival actions. Nothing more, nothing less. Harm the rival badly in ARO isn't mostly the best strategy. So, Vainilla without fireteams can't do damage in ARO, but yes, Vainilla can delay, really well indeed.

    Short range...
Ghazi, as @Solar said, are amazing, if you deploy them well, your rival probably can`t go inside your DZ in the first turm if you go second.
Naffatum... Heavy Flame Thrower, nothing more to say, Judge!! :P

This tandem are amazing when we spoke of "ARO Zone denial"

Lasiq Viral Snipper or Djambazan snipper aren`t really strong, but probably could do loose a couple or orders to the rival, so, maybe they were worthy.

You have too a lot of "probably they will do nothing" long ARO pieces, as a Ghulam with snipper or even ML, and the "humble" Daylamis with panzerfaust, this guys are amazing when we spoke in ARO terms. 7 points, Light Shot Gun + PanzerFaust? Yes. They will be killed for almost sure, but if you are lucky they will hit the target and your rival will have a bad time rolling the armour dices. Whatever, probably the waste of orders will be a lot and you could play your turn "without problems".

Lets say that Haquisslam don't play clean when we talk abour ARO.

Maybe if you tell us how do you want to play we can find the best ARO pice in haquisslam for your "battle plan".

    Best regards!
