I started this summer, and I've proxied every faction trying to figure out what I like. My local gaming area has three guys playing Aleph and one playing Haqqislam / O-12. Personally I don't like paying the same thing I see my opponents fielding every game, but I want to play a really strong game. That seems like Tohaa, and I really like Tohaa for the weirdness and the strong flavor.

    But...

I don't want to spend money on a faction that's going to be discontinued in a few months. The chatter on the forum is pretty gloomy :(

Would I be better off picking something else that is both strong and uncommon?

Tohaa is strong and uncommon. But it's already been discontinued (which is what's produced some of the mixed conversational optimism you've noticed). CB is not presently producing/selling models for the faction, so unless your LGS has a stock they can be hard to find.

However, being discontinued has no impact on whether a faction can be played, it just means the models are less available as part of CB's effort to keep their product line manageable for retailers.

Hi shokeyshah, these are my thoughts!

I feel that the Tohaa faction will remain because we are deeply anchored in Corvus Belli's storyline. This year has been very difficult because there is great uncertainty, which is why many are scared. It is probably true also that in 2-3 years when we get new models to replace our discontinued ones, our rules will be very different.

My suggestion, if that worries you, is to mostly collect and play the parts of the Tohaa which can also be played with Spiral Corps. Neema, Aelis, Chaksa, Draal, Kriigel, SURDOBEASTS, and so on. Only get a few of the parts which aren't, like Sukuel, Sakiel, Gao-Rael. Corvus Belli is also very generous with proxies, so even if you end up collecting a lot of Tohaa and if they do get removed, you can always still proxy them or make conversions for them. (I'm planning on making a conversion of Zhedeyan Intervention into post-Daedalus Sakiels, for instance.)

Tohaa is fun, and Spiral Corps is also fun. You won't go wrong signing up with us, trust me.

Currently Tohaa is in good position, the problem is next year we will get new Infinity edition. It's hard to say what will happen then. Shasvastii were in same spot (miniatures were still produced but the rules haven't been updated for few years) during transition from N2 to N3 and they were not really playable fraction. So there is always a risk, Tohaa might be obsolete after all other armies will get new rules/points tweaks/ etc.

It pains me to say it as a Tohaa player myself but if this is going to be your main fraction, I would suggest picking a different one. Otherwise next year, you might end with and army that is not competitive or fun to play with. As @Einhorn suggested, you might always expand to Spiral corps and that sectorial should be a safe bet in the new edition.

I think your safest bet it's Spiral Corps. Considering the new edition next summer I dont think CB would have discontinued Tohaa if they had something in store for them.

I'd say Dive into Tohaa if you have interest. Tohaa has the least amount of things to buy of all the armies and some of it isn't going anywhere. Sure some stuff has been discontinued, but not everything has. This is a part of the story where the Tohaa will be taking a back seat. The Tohaa are not dead and the Spiral Corps are only adding to the Tohaa. Sure they are not a direct sectorial, but their units did add to our own forces.

If you want to get into Tohaa then I would recommend looking at what is still around and place those on the back burner. Then look at what was discontinued and seek any that you really like and want. If you can get what you want from the discontinued stuff then buy it and join us with the Tohaa. If you can't find enough of it to satisfy you then you can decide on another army. Keep in mind that you can proxy anything in Infinity, so if you can't find something you can just proxy.

I suspect Tohaa will only be getting a few more releases that are Sprial Corps related and then we won't see anything for a few years. Once the story changes I could see the Tohaa return with a new sectorial and a slight design change in the same way Spiral Corps had a slight design change from previous Tohaa units.

CB has multiple ways to get more Tohaa into the game if they choose to. The best way to make that happen is to have Tohaa players playing Tohaa and demanding more Tohaa.

It might be worth examining CBs record on discontinuing models and lines/characters/etc in Infinity. In roughly chronological order:
    • Ko Dali was removed from Yujing and given to Combined Army. (Note: Tiger Soldiers remain playable so Ko Dali models could still be used as Tiger Soldiers)
    • Exrah and The Caskuda were removed from the Combined army at the end of 2nd Ed. (Note: Nexus Operatives, Fraacta and Overdrons were added to Combined army at the same time in N3. And while not identical are generally similar to the removed).
    • The Tohaa Starter box and a few blisters (I think?) were discontinued in favour of putting them in as part of the 300pt army box.
    • The Alive Group were added to all the armies and then removed after the ITS season was over. Adding Bit and Kiss only to Vanilla. Later Bit and Kiss were added to some of the other Sectorial armies. (note: No models were produced for these characters)
    • SEF and MRRF were Discontinued as Lines. MRRF received a last model as a send off. Both armies remain playable.
    • JSA was split off to become its own army. CB has made statements that this decision was in part related to the Army Builder data that showed most Yu Jing players were playing either all JSA or nothing. Though the decision was controversial and evoked alot of negative reaction on the forum here. JSA remains playable as a faction. Yu Jing still has access to Ninjas and received a unit not dissimilar to the Shikami.
    • Corregidor and QK Were Discontinued. Both remain Playable armies.
    • SEF and MAF lost access to Bit and Kiss. (Note: Alternative Hacker profiles were added to the army at the same time).
    • SEF was reintroduced with improved rules. 2 Units were heavily reworked and 1 unit was renamed. But all the individual models released previously are still playable.
Read into the changes that have been/will be how you want. I'm not going to claim that I know or see anything that CB has in its plans for the future. What I see from the changes they've made historically they want people to be able to play with their toys. Sometimes that isn't 100% possible but they generally try and give people a route to proxy the units at the very least. And don't forget they're a small-medium enterprise in a country that has had a number of economy troubles in recent history, so of course some of their day to day energy goes into making sure their employees can continue to make a living and put food on the table.

This isn't quite right, 300pt boxes are limited run bundle offers, the contents remained in production during and after the availability of the larger box.

The Starter set was discontinued at some point. I was 99% sure that that was at the same time that the 300pt bundle was released? I think this was around the time that the blisters were being discontinued and repacked as 2 ofs.

The starter didn't get discontinued until the release of Spiral Corps, it's on the list of SKUs announced during the preview week. Some stores may have stopped stocking it alongside the 300pt box but it remained an active SKU.

Individual Igao blisters were discontinued and replaced with a two pack, and the Kaauri blisters were repackaged into a box of 4, but both these were much later, and crucially both the Igao and Kaauri are still in production.

I think I will proxy Tohaa/Spiral Corp (I have been using Ariadna and O-12 models to proxy every faction up till now) until I can get the SC box for Christmas. After three months of proxy I should be used to it right?

You like to play "strong game" go for another faction : Pano ? Varuna ? Nomad ? Tunguska ? Starco ? Dashat compagnie ?
in any case, if you choose to play Tohaa, after some days/months you'll find yourself going to play another faction.
    It's Tohaa (last) year :p

Having a bit of trouble parsing that, but Tohaa is a very competitive faction.

Tohaa is undoubtedly 1) better than all of these and 2) none of the factions you named are overperforming in tournaments except VIRD.

Tohaa, Aleph and OSS are the holy trinity of tournament placements.

I feel like CA/SEF have been doing very well lately as well. Just based on the last few major events.

I think it is worth noting that all these characters would only be around for the ITS season, (with the ITS winner choosing where one of them would end up), was communicated at the release time of the season and the unit profiles.
The greatest contention with Bit & Kiss that they were originally available in all Combined Sectorials, but now are only available in Vanilla and Onyx.

As for starting Tohaa the miniatures may be difficult to track down, and it is unlikely the faction will receive any updates, (in terms of units or resculpted minis), that do not also belong in Spiral Corps in the next couple of years. However, as an army Tohaa provide a lot of unique rules which set them apart from other factions, and can be very powerful on the table.

Note that only the units unique to Vanilla Tohaa have been discontinued. All Tohaa units that are available to Spiral Corps are still available and in production. The discontinued units are Nikoul, Sakiel, Sukeul, Gao-Rael, Gao-Tarsos, Taqeul, Ectros (minus Neema Satar), Gorgos, and Makeul. That is only 9 of 32 units not counting mercs. Though many of them are/were very popular options for Tohaa play.
