That reminds me this summer firefighters' spokesman stated:
My first reflex was "thanks a lot captain obvious" then I realised that they actually have to state the obvious because... human kind being that dumb.

Twice this summer I saw fire rings for campfires built by tourists where the rocks were several inches apart. Fire indeed has become a near fictional experience for many and how to use it, especially safely, is becoming a rare skill. That doesn't stop with fire, yesterday I watched as a twenty something woman and her hipster husband fled from a 15 lb grass chomping marmot (aka rock chuck) screaming "bear cub".

    *slowly back away from*

Parenting these days is pretty much a failure on most parts. Instead of teaching part and letting learn by experience, parents now go for one of two extremes.
    A. Complete and absolute oversheltering, not lettting the kid have any kind of external experience and blaming everyone for everything, preventing the kid from growing on their own and preparing for the future properly.
    B. Complete ignorance and neglect, forcing the kid to learn entirely by themselves.
Both cases result in stunted emotional and social growth.

Another WtF from earlier today was when I got curious and foolishly clicked a link to Netflix's Best of: Adam Sandler - a selection of his *ahem* best standup routines...
    Jesus wept.

In fact, I constructed this immediately after, to help convey my emotional state. rabbitsandler.jpg

Surely if it was truly "the best" of Adam Sandler it should be about 1m12s shorter than what you watched?

    Sad but true.

Better people run like hell from something not-a-bear-cub than some frackwit putting honey/peanut butter on their kid's face to get an actual bear to lick their kid for a photo...

I think it was a mistranslation.
It should have been "the least worst of ..."

Because even the least worst of his work is still shit.

I agree, his early work was not bad at all, he just went downhill fast

From what I can tell, the successes of the earlier movies and his production company (Happy Madison) basically paved the way for him to make any old shit to get the paycheques, at least vaguely safe in the knowledge that having his name in the credits would prevent total financial flops (not sure how that's holding up nowadays though)

I recall in an interview after the release of a widely-panned movie that he basically admitted he only greenlit it because he wanted to take his family on holiday to where the movie would have be filmed.

Edit: In a shocking turn of events, unlike most of the vaguely-half-remembered-anecdotal-evidence I produce I've actually found a source for that:

Red Letter Media had an analysis of Sandler's work ethic in their review of the abysmal Jack & Jill.
So much of the movie was just a series of commercials.

I thought "surely it can't be that bad?", so I looked for clips of the cruise scene. Holy shit, it really was that obnoxious with its product placement and endorsements! It's like Sandler was already in profit before the movie was even released.

I wouldn't suprise me, this morning I learned about the 'Lindy Effect':

.. the life expectancy of a television comedian is [inversely] proportional to the total amount of his exposure on the medium. If, pathetically deluded by hubris, he undertakes a regular weekly or even monthly program, his chances of survival beyond the first season are slight; but if he adopts the conservation of resources policy favored by these senescent philosophers of "the Business", and confines himself to "specials" and "guest shots", he may last to the age of Ed Wynn
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lindy_effect

Sandler must have long since run out of decent comedic material by now, so he's gotta carry the business on somehow

Can't really blame the guy for wanting to make a buck, but artists are held to a different standard

My main issue with him isn't his blatant cash grabbing, but rather the fact that he sounds like a goat

You only need a little, I read an article about a guy who pretty much only eats Big Macs (1-3 a day), has perfect cholesterol and blood pressures, and ran a half marathon even though he's over the age of 50! He stays active, doesn't over eat,and free lettuce, onions, and sauce provide just enough of everything else to get him by.

Genetics seem to play a huge deal too, I'm sure someone else in the same diet with the same lifestyle as Big Mac guy wouldn't be as lucky.

We're not all equal for a lots of things. How our body reacts to food is one of many.

It reminds me about Christian Bale gaining 45 pounds for his impersonation of Dick Cheney in Vice.
He was obviously closely followed in term of medical care. The big surprise was that he ended with better constants than at his original shape.

The number of Caribbean people in their 80s and 90s that subsist on a diet of fried fish, stewed oxtail, and curry goat, never fails to amaze me.

It's all about excess. Eat 25 apples for each meals and you'll have problems even though apples are good for you.
