So this came up on a social meedja page I follow that shares coding memes: I know there are quite a few code monkeys on the forum so I thought I'd see what other people think. The floppy disc is pretty much relegated to the annals of history now, and the vending machine is still a massive and ubiquitous industry in Japan. Don't know about anyone else but I find it kinda interesting that now there are generations that have never even heard of the floppy disc, so as a result their perceptions of established icons are starting to reflect what is ubiquitous to them.

ROTFLSHMSFOAIDMT And now crying for being old. It indeed raises a true question though: is it possible to design icons that will never become obsolete? I know it's a entire field of expertise, juste like the "Power" button or whatever, but it's difficult to imagine that obvious icons for us might become unclear for Star Trek next generations
Yeah it's more or less the same one, weirdly it works fine for me (you can tell I'm a coder), FWIW here's a link to my original source: https://www.facebook.com/wesoftwarengineers/posts/1259522810882100 One of the other aspects which our team's UX designer raised is just how much assumed knowledge goes into our visual designs, regardless of the original references becoming obsolete, like if an alien from zeta reticuli came a-visiting (and thus having zero prior knowledge), how the heck would he know which button is to save his spreadsheet.
ROFLMAO!!! (sure looks like a Japanese vending machine, too!) But what else would you use for 'save to (local) disk'? 'Save to cloud' would be pretty obvious, but save to disk?

Well I would prefer more like a disk with the arrow, to indeed differentiate it from download but I didn't invest time in looking for the exact image I had in mind. 0:)
In video games, the rotating circle (or game icon of choice) is now the universal "game is saving" indicator. Some sort of ouroboros sounds like it would be ideal to me.
