I have been playing Onyx for the last month after making a switch from Morats. And it also seems either at the same time that my meta has shifted to be a TAG heavy one, where if I am playing a faction with a TAG; I am most likely going to face one. Mostly Maghariba Guard and O-Yoroi. I didn't really feel the pain that much with Morats due to the cheap access to Red Furies with Zerats and Raktoraks, but I am certainly feeling it now; I am not the most effect hacker outside of buffs. I know that the guide in this forum says that the Sphinx is the absolute best TAG next to the Avatar, but since I assume it will be getting a re-sculpt in the near future (since it was shown in the Shesvastii announcement earlier this year). I am going to hold off an picking that model up. Which leaves Xeodons and Overdron. I am leaning towards the Xeodrons because of their access to the Red Furies, and ability to Haris. But what is your guys opinions?
I endorse Xeodrons. I once had one Neutralize an Avatar with its Blitzen for an entire game. Outside of that single occurrence, though, They're nice and small so they can sneak around and get some work done without unnecessarily exposing themselves to danger.
I'd have to endorse the Overdrons, specifically the 2x HRL version. 57 points for a trooper with ARM 6 and 3 STR makes for a great fire superiority piece. Get it somewhere where it can watch an important lane and watch as your enemy wastes orders trying to take it down. Albedo and deflector offer some very nice defenses against msv troopersand hackers - albedo especially won't always come into play but when it does you'll be glad to have it The xeodron can also be useful, it's just that you need to spend more orders moving it up the board in order to get the most out of it. I tend to shy away from rambo peices that don't have access to at least one thing from the following list: templates, spec fire (e.g grenades), modifiers (e.g ODD or mimetism), or smoke grenades. It can still get work done if you can get it into the right rangebands and make proper use of super jump however, and there's a lot to be said for moving it upfield and going into supressive fire on a roof or something in order to roadblock your opponent
You can take a haris of Xeodrons but why not just take two overdrons? I like both tags but the Over is definately my weapon of choice, at least one sneaks into about 40% of my lists these days either in onyx or vanilla.
I think the Overdron is a good choice. You can proxy it for a single Xeodron or Sphinx as well as they are all S6 on paper. And did you see them cutie pie TinBotsies? You have to have them, period!
Your question seems to be about what goes well in a list and I'd have to say that while the Xeo can be fun, the Over is my pick. That said, your replies seem to indicate it's more a problem of budget... in which case I'd say grab the Xeodron box and just proxy (all TAGs in Onyx are S6, as mentioned above) for whichever you feel like. You get two TAGs for $37 on gamenerdz as opposed to 1 TAG and 2 tinbots for $34.
I like the Overdron a lot; I tend to run the HRMC version the most frequently. In missions with Saturation Zones it can give you quite the edge, and is a WIP 13 specialist thanks to the Stahldron it carries around. I've had the most success with the Xeodrons running them in a Haris in Biotechvore; having a core fireteam and a Xeo haris means your order efficiency getting out of the zone is nuts.
They do different things, so it depends which niche you want to fill. The Overdron is a ranged fire superiority piece - nothing more and nothing less. It has almost no defenses other than ARM if the enemy gets close. HRL is the cheapest, but also the shortest ranged and therefore likely to be closest to enemy models. The HRMC and Plasma can be comfortably outside of almost all enemy +3 bands, which is what they want. Albedo is just icing on the cake if your opponent is trying to put a visored model on overwatch. Xeodrons are mid to short ranged brawlers with a (unique) fireteam option. They have good mobility from superjump, but are 4-4 move and a large silhouette, so they aren’t “fast” and need to be careful about LoF. They want to get into weird spots and flank things that weren’t expecting a TAG to come after them. They are much more likely than the Overdron to use their specialist pilot bots.
Xeodrons for sure! That is, regarding which miniatures you should get. Now, hear me out. Personally, I much prefer the Overdron, but the Xeodron gives you two TAGs, meaning it enables you to run both 2x Xeodrons or even proxy them as Overdrons. They look similar to one another anyway, so it's not like it's a big deal.
On paper, I love the Overdrone. Albedo for hunting down those annoying MSV troops and nice selection of heavy weaponry. But when it comes to list building, I cannot squeeze him in. More often I'd run Xeodrons haris (Multi+Red Fury+Samaritan Hacker). They need some finesse in getting them into good range. But when they get there, two TAGS in midfield are something really sturdy and scary (apply suppressive fire for extra utility). Long time ago I managed to squeeze one Xeo on 250p tournament. Funny times :D
Both over and xeo feel like more +size HI. But in my opinion if i go money X use i pick the Overdrone. A solo xeo with red fury is also good to consider if you suport him with Fracta/ ko dali and you have an umbra/suryats as back up
Thanks everyone for the input I did pick up an Overdron and i am in the process of converting its dual plasma snipers into HRLs using the T-Drone launchers.
I'd like to say, that Xeodrons have their advantages too. For example, a few weeks ago I've decided to put only one Xeodron with K1 Combi Rifle as TAG hunter, and it worked perfectly agains Seraph :) I had hope to meet TAG in this match so thats why Xeodron was my choice. It is mobile and scary against more tanky minis and hes not that costy :) On the other hand, Overdron with Hyper-Rapid-Magnetic-Cannon with fatality 1 (as far as I remember, TAGs gets fatality 1 in this season) watching perimeter on suppresive fire, with 5 shots 16 dmg each is scarry as well :D Edit: I just remembered last Interplanetario https://www.infinitythegame.com/blog/item/568-v-interplanetario-winners-list @BlazyCrane Check this out! :)
