Hi, I'm an Ariadna player from long time. Recently i acquired Coldfront and Advanced Pack. Then i have now a little squad of Aleph. 3x Daikini 1x Deva 1x Naga 1x Yadu 1x Shukra 1x Asuras What tacrics i can play with this models? How to expand my Aleph army? Thanks Inviato dal mio MI 5s Plus utilizzando Tapatalk
Hi there OSS is a toolbox, both as a whole and when considering many of their units. Emphasis is on durability (NWI all aroudn the place), mobility (fast Remotes, fast MI, multiple infiltrator options), and mutual support (especially regarding hacker/remotes combination, and Apsara unit). Most of the time you'll start by constructing Dakini Core link, then decide what support you have in mind for them (hacker with supportware, flank guards) and what elements will take care of objectives or take the fight to the enemy. Said Dakini Core will be the anvil, as it's not that easy to bypass fully linked Dakini sniper, unless with smoke. You might throw in other units to tweak the fireteam to your needs; CSU Specialist with Rifle+LSG is a good addition, it brings a lot of utility. Deva Spitfire is another, allowing you to operate this link team forward in your active turn. There are some nice Haris options to act as a hammer or to contest midfield, but many of them are expensive. Shukra makes playing with two combat groups easier thanks to Counterintelligence, and enables use of aggressive Lieutenant options (Yadu, Shakti, Asura, Marut). I'd start expanding with this: Dakini box (you need it to form your main Core, and it gives you another Deva, too) Support box (Netrods are almost mandatory, unless you're playing Limited Insertion) Dart (she's our best midfield hunters) CSU (to fill the Core) Garuda (to have another attack vector available) Next purchases are a matter of style, but I'd probably get the standard Rebots pretty soon.
Thanks Stiopa, I think i'll buy Beyond Coldfront box too for the Tak Character. Then... What about the 3 Aleph unit in the box Rudra, Apsara, Shakti Hacker How to put them in your suggested army? Inviato dal mio MI 5s Plus utilizzando Tapatalk
Ok: Yadu Haris: Yadu (starter), Shakti (KHD, possible LT), Rudras (counts as yadu). Apsara as "improving Dakini core" 3x Dakini + Deva in fireteam Core. The Dakinis use some stats from the Apsaras (one model is missing but you would need more models). Naga deployed in front as Minelayer or KHD. Asura as Spitfire, you can use her as Lt level 2 for an extra order Shukra as Chain of Command. If you have remotes you can use, do so. Being able to proxy the Traktor Muls as baggage bots (8pts apiece) is good. If you can make conversions, I suggest cutting both the Naga's sniper rifle and one of the Dakini's combi rifle in the same spot aproximately and exchange those, to get a naga Combi and a Dakini Sniper. Things to buy, in this order: Scour your local shops and try to get a Naga Blister (currently out production). Support Pack (3x Netrods, 1x Sophotect) Posthuman Box 1 (2x Mk1, 1 Mk2, 1x Mk3) => use the mk3 as proxy for Mk4 if needed. You might use some Ariadnan models as proxy for the Mk5 (I use Uxia Covert Ops) Dart Blister Aleph Remotes (mount 1 Total Reaction and 1 Missile Launcher). The Missile launcher can join the Dakini fireteam. Once you have those pieces, you can grab the Garuda and the Dakini SWC box with the second Deva, and the Danavas+Karkata blister.
Ah, I forgot to mention Beyond Coldfront. It's an important addon as well. Rudra is basically a heavy combat HI in remote form. It carries its own Repeater so it meshes well with support and killer hackers. K1 or Red Fury are the best choices, depending on whether you plan to hunt heavies or light troops with it. And it can run with Yadu fireteam - most likely Haris - for expensive but very dangerous combat element. Shakti is almost an autoinclude from my PoV. Like all Yadus she's unhackable, ignores Jammers and E/M, comes with a good weapon, can hunt hackers and is a specialist. She's an expensive but very well equipped toolbox. She's also a good Lt. choice, especially with Shukra CoC on table. Apsara is there basically to boost Remotes, most likely a Dakini Core. Aside from that she'll probably sit the whole game in some safe spot. I'd stay away from Posthumans for now, simply because they're too good at the moment. It's easy to learn to overly rely on them. This is a very rough example of how you can go about this. You can always swap something to run the Asura, include Sophotect, or go with Posthumans anyway. One thing you'll have to be ready for in OSS is that it's very difficult to fit everything you have in mind into a single list. Those elite troopers come with a price tag to match :P Operations Subsection of the S.S.S. ────────────────────────────────────────────────── GROUP 1 10 SHAKTI Lieutenant Hacker (Killer Hacking Device. Posthumans mate. Certainly the first box, maybe the second one if you like the way they play. They're superb attacking pieces and specialist pieces and don't break the bank
Why would you want to, though? Without being flip about it, I think this is a weak argument against using posthumans starting out. They're a staple for a reason, and there's no point in handicapping yourself by not taking them. Also, it isn't like they're going to suddenly fall off our roster.
Because sometimes they get taken out by unlucky crits in the first order of the game and your entire plan falls apart. Learning to play without crutch units makes you a better player because it forces you to understand the fundamentals of the game more. One of the best things I ever did for my ability in this game was to pick up a second faction that forced me to break out of the power units I relied on. I'm not saying you should go to tournaments with a lists containing only Deva and Dakinis, especially not in a faction like OSS that can support a rambos playstyle, but using unusual lists in friendly games helps broaden your experience in playing the game.
You just named 90% of the models in the game. The point we disagree on is that they're a "crutch." I don't feel like you've given any really compelling argument that supports this opinion. It's not even just you, it comes up often enough, but it seems like something that just gets repeated without anything to substantiate it. Posthumans are a unit available to both OSS and Aleph, and so they're always present regardless of which way you go. Deliberately ignoring a valuable tool for the sake of learning it "the hard way" is nonsense, and the claim that they somehow subvert the fundamentals of the game is equally nonsensical. Understanding the game is done by playing it, not by tying your arm behind your back and strapping weights to your legs. It's not Dragon Ball Z. Regarding fundamentals, their skills aren't unique to our army or the game, and they aren't exactly easy mode, either. They're just good at what they do, which is fill gaps in our lists, and they've done that through many other list changes, which is why they seem to be in every list. Imagine that; a very flexible tool that can be reconfigured to do a lot of different jobs that gets used frequently. I agree that using fun lists and experimenting is a good idea and a good way to learn the game, and I also think that it isn't a point in favor of not using Posthumans. Tl;Dr, there isn't a good reason to use a tire iron to change out a tire when you have a pneumatic wrench on hand, and you certainly don't learn to use a pneumatic wrench by using a tire iron. You learn to use the wrench by using the wrench. The fundamentals of how a bolt works doesn't change, regardless of which tool you're using.
Until your pneumatic wrench gets hit by a Blitzen crit, then you wish you'd spent more time with the tyre iron. Best to learn to play with and without your favourite tools.
"Don't use the thing because it can die if [narrow circumstance] happens." This isn't a good argument. Also, I think you're missing the point, so I'm going to spell it out with the hope that you don't take it as condescension. Using different models to understand the game better = good advice! I've already agreed with you there. Telling people not to use a series of models "because it might die to a crit" or other reasons which have failed to materialize = bad.
I think we're talking past each other, my point was not to rely on the best models, and to practice not having them, not to avoid them completely.
I see where I read into your comment a bit more than you intended in what I quoted originally, and then as you said, looks like we talked past one another. Can't disagree with that!
The "problem" with Aleph in general, and OSS in particular, is that the units are, individually, quite capable. That makes it too easy to "fall in love" with certain units and use those almost all the time, and while it is true the game won't ban them suddenly, it is also true that certain missions will be much easier by using different units. In this particular case, it is too easy to grab an Engineer Mk1 and a Dakini Paramedic, then call it a day forever... but the Sophotect costs more than those two together for a reason, after all, and while she can't shoot very well, she is a fast, self-healing multipurpose unit that can be better than those two. Or maybe you need that Yadu Core +Rudra, and a Yadu Haris with a Rudras & Deva, and that's about 290pts with 8 orders, because Biotechvore makes Posthumans a risky proposition (not an autodefeat, mind you, I've won Biotechvore games with Vanilla Aleph and 3 proxies), but you don't conceive a list without the proxies. Bottom line, avoid learning with crutches, because those are useful, but they can certainly slow you down. And besides, always relying in Posthumans, for example, will prevent you from that wonderful experience that is a basic Dakini keeping a Seraph at bay for a whole game XD
As the other guy and I finally agreed, we we're talking past one another. My point was, calling something a crutch isn't productive, and you can advocate for getting to know all of the available options without referring to another model as a crutch or a handicap. It adds a negative connotation to the proxies for no reason, when legitimately, every new player should absolutely learn to use the proxies, and should learn when other options are better for specific missions. Both are true, and where new players are concerned, we should really paint the entire picture, not just parrot a talking point. We take for granted the fact that we understand that proxies aren't the answer to everything, but if we're also being honest, they're an answer to a whole lot.
