I always love how the secret governments are masterminds that control everything, down to the most innocent of seeming details, and yet at the same time are so inept, that someone that couldn't finish primary education can unravel the secrets. I have had some really crazy ones explained to me, and I just had to assure the individual, that there is no way our government is competent enough to pull off a conspiracy of any magnitude.

I'm of the opinion that governments are too inept to carry out conspiracies, but individuals aren't

Could the Bush administration have done 9/11? Doubtful

Could Dick Cheney have? I'm prepared to believe it

    Real world conspiracies are silly.

In fiction though, BRING ME MORE!

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. Just because you can't find the evidence doesn't mean it was deliberately hidden.

I mean, I want to believe and all ...

... but those movies were pretty shite (and apart from Gillian Anderson, the series wasn't very watchable, either ... )

An uncle of mine was an engineer in charge of dealing with the "2000 effect" on the satellites built by the company he was working for. And trust me it could have been a major "space mess" with trajectories and orbits. It was his major occupation for the whole 1999 year. And when i'm talking about an engineer, i'm talking about a guy who gratuated first of his (pretty renowned) school of electrical engineering in 1972 and ended up his career being deputy director of the communication satellite branch of his company, so someone who was highly qualified and experienced at the time (why he was entrusted with that task).
My parents were to spent the new year's even oversea, and the first thing he told them was : "don't fly before 3rd of january 2000 at least".

My father spent the whole year prepping the whole national bus company for the day, spent the end of the year on the office with more people...

I spent it trying to cram a Redhat Linux into a 486DX66, then replacing the HDD for one with more than 500Mb of HDD... Damn, how things have changed :S

It has been pointed out that we now know for certain that there were no alien landings or crashes in the US, and that the whole deal with area 51 can only be standard military secrecy, covering nothing more suspect than prototype aircraft in the early testing stages.
    Why?
'cus the orange tosser has twitter access and can't keep his mouth shut.

I'm pretty much done with fictional conspiracies now as well, I don't just find them meh, they actively annoy me.
I can't switch my brain off to them any more, it's like reading/watching fiction based on my work (hint for any prospective screenwriters out there, if your terrorist has somehow gotten hold of some plutonium, before you see fit to inform the audience what mass of material they've inexplicably got their grubby mitts on, go look up the terms "critical mass" and "moderator" on wikipedia).

It's a little random where this feeling kicks in though, I just watched ep.1 of an anime and literally within the first minute was shouting at the sheer stupidity of the characters for charging a fortress, armed with flintlock muskets. No ladders, grappling hooks or anything else to scale the walls. What they were going to do if/once they reached the bottom of the improbably tall walls is anyone's guess. But I'm sure for anyone with absolutely no concept of mass battle fighting, let alone black-powder era combat, and for whom the term forlorn hope is just angsty teenager speak, it all looked suitably "martial" and "heroic".

    Kdin?
    Koun?
    Kalin?
    Kaun?

I've had a mate have his cup come back with Phteven as his name (after giving them "stephen, with a ph" ). Not even sure if they were taking the piss or that the artisanal toss-pot behind the counter couldn't actually spell.

It's Colin, never seen it spelled with a K before, but at least they got the correct number of 'l's.

"Phteven" was quite a common "meme" with "da yoof" on "teh intarwebs" a few years ago which probably explains what happened to your friend.

What sort of metal work. I've done turning, polishing, welding and casting. Haven't done forging yet (no smithys around here).
