Hello all! Gateway Gauntlet was this past weekend, and I was lucky enough to play 5 awesome games. I wanted to write up a battle report so that I could share my thoughts and experiences with Dahshat.

The missions on the day were Power Pack, Frontline, Annihilation, Engineering Deck, and The Armory, in that order. Frontline and Annihilation are extremely straightforward shoot-em-ups, with few considerations outside of reducing your opponent's army points. Power Pack, Engineering Deck, and The Armory require more more specific approaches. Power Pack has very odd 12"x16" deployment zones, and a saturation zone that substantially reduces the defensive firepower of fireteams. Engineering Deck and Armory have Objective Rooms that completely skew both listbuilding and gameplay. Enginerring Deck requires button-pushers and the room only matters at the very end, while The Armory is 90% about the room, though it's possible to get a major victory as long as you're in sole control at the end of the game.

With those in mind, I made a list I thought could handle Engineering Deck and The Armory, and one I thought could handle Power Pack. I figured either one could take on Frontline and/or Annihilation, so I tried to make them a bit complimentary for those missions.

Here's the list I went with to handle Engineering Deck and The Armory:

While a bit light on specialists, this list has a ton of firepower and a ton of orders. Valerya and her haris friends are intended to be the initial armory breaching team, with the Rui Shi / Zuyong / Bounty Hunter core and McMurrough as backups. Bounty Hunters can automatically collect booty from the panoplies, and McMurrough is virtually guaranteed to be able to destroy them with his AP+DA CCW. The rest of the list is mostly support - the TR HMG is a flex piece that tries to slow down the opponent's initial assault or lock them down if I am able to take out their firepower early on. The Liberto is there to act as a suicide piece to clear out the objective rooms of troublesome hackers, jammers, or warbands. The Hunzakut needs little explanation, camo infiltrating specialists are virtually always useful.

For the complementary list, I wanted to field a Maghariba Guard so the list largely pivoted around that:

This list is more focused on passive defense and simply drowning the enemy in cheap, effective pieces. The dual minelayer Libertos are the first line of defense, with the Fanous remotes forming the second. The Maggie + Rafiq duo along with the Hunzakut FO are the button-pushers, able to get up the field and clear the midfield out of camouflage relavitely quickly - something I assumed I would likely encounter in the otherwise-cramped Power Pack. On that note I opted to bring the Hunzakut with light grenade launcher because the cramped deployment zones in Power Pack often led to opponents deplying tight clusters of models that were very vulnerable to speculative fire attacks. Finally the Brawler core with MSV2 sniper, Doctor, and 3 Bounty Hunters were primarily complementary firepower for the Maghariba, able to tackle heavy visual modifiers as well as prevent enemy warbands/cc specialists from getting too close to my TAG.

In both lists I intended my Ghulam lieutenant to be synchronized to the Xenotech, as she was an obvious LT regardless and at least that way I could get good use out of my LT order. With so many cheap models to put between my opponents and my LT, I was hopeful I could keep her safe from everything barring very aggressive Impersonators. Both lists also utilized SMG Bounty Hunters as cheap filler, serviceable ARO models, and a chance at free heavy firepower.

Overall my biggest concern was my relatively low specialist count, but I was hopeful that as long as I could knock out enough of my opponent's stuff with overwhelming firepower, I could preserve my specialists for late-game objective grabs. I have more thoughts I might share in subsequent posts, but for now I think we should just get to the gameplay.

My classified objective options were Telemetry and In Extremis Recovery, I opted for the latter as my lists were actually fairly light on FOs. On the possibility that I would be facing down multiple TO Order Sergeants, I decided to stick to my plan of utilizing the Maghariba list for this mission.

I don't recall the result of the Lieutenant Roll, but my opponent chose deployment while I chose to take the first turn. In my left deployment zone I placed my Brawler + ABH fireteam, both Traktor Muls (tucked in a back corner), and a Fanous. On the right I placed the Maghariba + Rafiq, Dozer, my Ghulam LT (with Xenotech), and the two remaining Fanous. The Libertos each took an Antenna to guard with their bodies and mines, while the Hunzakut FO deployed in the center room adjacent to the center Antenna. I reserved the Hunzakut LGL.

My opponent opted to place his Father-Knight with missile launcher on my right, with the Trauma-Doc and Warcor as backup. On the left he put his Joan + Hospitaler + Santiago fireteam, as well as his Tech-Bee (synched to the Xenotech) and the Trauma-Doc's Palbot. He reserved his Black Friar MSR.

For my reserve, I did not see any great opportunities to utilize the Hunzakut's speculative fire, so instead I opted to Infiltrate into his table half within striking range of his Hospitaler doctor and Santiago KHD. I succeeded at that roll, and he placed his Black Friar with a view to my brand new camo marker should she try to do anything.

My Bounty Hunters picked up a flash pulse, +2 ARM, and a chain rifle. My opponent stripped 2 orders from my secondary combat pool to limit the potential damage from my camo marker.

Going first, my first order of business was to try to take out the Father-Knight ML, as he was covering a substantial portion of the board and pinning down my TAG. I activated the fireteam with the Brawler MSV2 sniper in the lead, as he could deny the Father-Knight cover. It was the FK who would win the day, though, winning the F2F and reducing the poor Brawler to a fine mist, much to the dismay of my doctor. With no other good options I opted to try the firefight with the Maghariba, and while the FK was able to land a missile hit and strip a wound from the big girl, eventually the weight of her firepower was enough to drop the Knight to unconscious. Meanwhile the Rafiq advanced up the table toward the nearest antenna, breaking the duo but getting a couple free movements.

With that done my next priority was to cause as much damage as possible with my Hunzakut. She edged around a corner, prone, to see the Black Friar, and thanks to the combination of surprise shot and the 12" range her rifle dropped her target. Not eager to take on a still-fully-linked Santiago or Hospitaler, she turned her sights on the distant Warcor, and managed to sneak through a single rifle round to knock the journalist unconscious as well.

With my Brawler Sniper down and my Maghariba on the opposite corner from his Knight fireteam, I spent a couple orders moving my Rafiq forward to activate the nearest antenna. I pushed slightly further forward to attempt to sat-lock the unconscious Father-Knight, hopeful that I could utilize the Hunzakut's LGL to finish off either the FK or the nearby doctor to prevent his resurrection. Sadly after two attempts the sat-lock failed and I was forced to simply set up defensive positions for the next turn. My Hunzakut LGL regained camouflage, my core fireteam shuffled into defensive positions, and the Fanous remotes got a coordinated order to move up the table to better positions.

With only really Joan's fireteam and the Tech-bee remaining on the table, my opponent decided to try to revive his downed models and solidify his position closer to the center. He made the Hospitaler doctor the fireteam leader and advanced closer to the downed Black Friar. This brought him into LoF of the Hunzakut LGL, who opted to reveal to fire her grenade launcher to catch both the Hospitaler and Friar. The Hospitaler returned fire with his MULTI rifle, striking and killing the Hunzakut, but her grenade also found its mark and put the Friar down for good. On the other side of the table the Trauma-Doc crawled to the Father-Knight and successfully revived him, though he opted to remain prone for the moment to avoid AROs from the Rafiq, a Fanous, and a camo marker. Since had a clear path he spent a couple orders to have his Tech-bee and Xenotech advance forward and plant a multi-scanner inside the saturation zone. With his last order he advanced his Crusade fireteam forward to cover more space.

Back to Dahshat, the Maghariba sprung into action. It started trucking across the board, though hilariously I had to spend an order to jump over a gap it was to bulky to cross otherwise, and was unable to return to the ground. Thankfully with ARM8 against the DAM10 of the fall I was able to avoid any wounds. Eventually the Maghariba gained LoF to the Hospitaler HMG, which it was able to put down with a couple sets of AP rounds from its HMG. It continued on to take out the Tech-Bee with Shock, though her job was already done. Eventually I left it in the middle of the board with a view into the central building as well as along both flanks, which would make it difficult to advance without dealing with the TAG first. With the way now clear, I moved one of the Libertos up into close range with Joan, where I was able to put two light shotgun shots into both Joan and the Hospitaler BS. Sadly despite two hits the Knights' armor was proof against the attack. As the fireteam was now facing down a shotgun or chain-colt ARO on two of its members if it ever activated, I simply left the Libertos in position. In an attempt to thin out the link further, I moved my Bounty Hunters up onto a rooftop in close range of the Santiago, and attempted to take it down with the ABH's SMG. Sadly this too would fail, but yet another fireteam member was in danger of ARO if activated. With no more orders in that pool I shifted over to the secondary group, where I activated my lieutenant and successfully placed my multi-scanner. Lastly the central Hunzakut FO activated the middle antenna and returned to camo.

With his main fireteam pinned down my opponent made a savvy move - he broke the fireteam and reformed it without Joan, designating the Santiago as the new leader. With Joan blocking LoF to the rear Hospitaler, he was able to safely activate the team and move out of danger, while the lead Santiago engaged my Bounty Hunter in a firefight which resulted in no wounds. Afterward he stood up his Father-Knight on the other side of the table and successfully dodged two light shotgun rounds and a flash pulse to remain standing and regain ARO coverage of that table half. Joan decided to take matters into her own hands and took out the Liberto with her MULTI rifle, then tried to engage one of the Bounty Hunters but ate an akrylat-kanone round for her troubles, although she was able to shrug off the glue. The Santiago kept the team lead mantle and eventually took down my Bounty Hunter.

Having not lost much I was feeling good about my final turn. The first order of business was to take down the Father-Knight for good to free up my Rafiq (and possibly other models) to go and secure my opponent's console. I began by shifting the Maghariba over to see the now-exposed Hospitaler shotgun, who I dispatched with a handful of AP HMG rounds. Next I slid over into the FK's vision, and unleashed the MULTI HMG yet again - only to be met with a critical hit in return. Fortunately the big girl was able to pass the bonus armor rolls and remain functional, so I tried again, only to be met with ANOTHER critical hit. This time she wasn't so lucky and failed both of the follow-up rolls, putting her down for good. With no better ideas I moved my Ghulam lieutenant into position to engage the Knight, using the Xenotech to protect myself from his blast mode option. Unfortunately even with two orders sunk the Father-Knight refused to budge. With only a couple orders left to go I was forced to move the Rafiq out from under the FK's watchful eye. Fortunately his shot missed and I was able to get the Rafiq to my opponent's console, but my plans to supplement that control with a Fanous were dashed. With my last couple orders I moved the central Hunzakut forward and entered supression fire, hopeful it would prevent my opponent from getting to the central objective. The remaining Fanous moved into overwatch positions with the same goal. With that, active turn shifted back to my opponent.

Down two antennas to none and with his console controlled, my opponent had a rough road ahead. He began by trying to get his "duo" of Hospitaler Doctor and Santiago KHD to the left and central Antennas, respectively, but a barrage of flash pulse hits and a successful akrylat-kanone strike put a stop to that maneuver. With few other options he opted to race Joan to his console to prevent me from controlling it. Braving the suppression fire from my Hunzakut as well as several flash pulses, Joan trucked her way over to the console and managed to enter base-to-base with my opponent's final order.

I swapped my classified for Secure the HVT, which was close enough to the central building for the Hunzakut to claim.

Final Score: 8-3 in favor of Dahshat

The classified du jour was Test Run, which seemed like a good fit for the Rui Shi list. I won the LT roll and opted to go first, as I suspected multiple Bulleteers and wanted a chance to take them out before they had a chance to get rolling

I deployed my Core fireteam on the left, along with the Ghulam LT plus Xenotech, intending to run up the flank and cause serious damage. I put the Zuyong Haris and Shihab in the center as a backup to that plan. Traktor Muls hid in the back with the Dozer, Liberto and Hunzakut took the right flank to prevent a run-by.

In an effort to play keepaway from the Rui Shi, my opponent put his two Helots and a Fugazi on the Rui Shi's side, and buried his Kamau, Fusiliers, and a Bulleteer in the opposite corner of the map. The Zulu-Cobras formed a jammer barrier between his corner and my corner, while his support staff of Hacker/Doctor/Mulebot were distributed among rooftops and other safe havens.

I reserve deployed McMurrough to give the Rui Shi smoke cover from the Helots. My opponent plopped his second Bulleteer in a safe spot towards the center of his deployment zone. My Bounty Hunters rolled breaker rifle, MSV1, and MULTI sniper rifle (!!). My opponent stripped 2 orders from the Rui Shi's group, and we were off.

McMurrough impetuoused onto a roof and ate a Helot ARO, but beat it out with a smoke grenade. Then Valerya gave the Rui Shi assisted fire, and I started to move it up the flank, taking out the two Helots and the Fanous. This allowed access to my opponent's deployment zone, allowing the Rui Shi to take out a Bulleteer, another Fugazi, and a stray Fusilier. This opened the way for the Bounty Hunter with his shiny new MULTI sniper rifle to take over the corner from the Rui Shi and take out a distant linked Fusilier. This allowed the Zuyong HMG to move forward and take out the Kamau sniper. The rest of the turn was advancing my irregular camo forward and repositioning the Zuyong haris to keep them safe.

Varuna's turn opens with the Kamau HMG taking on the ABH sniper, but the sniper dual crits the Kamau off the table. This prompts a Zulu-Cobra to try his luck instead, spending several orders taking out the MSV1 Bounty Hunter and attempting to jam the Rui Shi but not finding scucess. The other Zulu-Cobra moved up and uncovered the Hunzakut with sensor, subsequetly jamming her successfully.

With turn passed back, the isolated Hunzakut moved around and used her light shotgun to take out the Zulu-Cobra that jammed her. Next, I needed to take out the other ZC jammer to free up the fireteam. The Zuyong HMG proved up to the task, taking out the ZC after a couple orders. With that done, it was time for the ABH sniper to go to work. By poking out at various angles he was able to take out the Machinist, Trauma-Doc, a Fusilier, a Mulebot, and the remaining Bulleteer. After that my opponent extended his hand as he was down to only a handful of Fusiliers and in Loss of Lieutenant, making his chances at victory quite slim. Since Fontline doesn't end on retreat, we agreed that some quick extra maneuvers would allow me to deploy my multi-scanner and secure the zones as well as his HVT.

Table corrupted! Have a 2B instead.

No classifieds in this mission! I went with List A as it has some hacking presence thanks to Valyria and simply higher-quality firepower I thought would do better against Tunguska. I lost the Lieutenant roll and my opponent wisely chose to go first, given the scenario and his LI list. I picked a side with fewer hidey-holes for Raoul to come on, and had my opponent deploy first.

The Tunguska commander put Mary Problems on my left flank, the Hollowman fireteam in the center, and Perseus on the right. The Clockmaker was tucked into the far back right corner. I deployed my Rui Shi fireteam on the right flank, with a ABH on a rooftop and the Liberto forward to discourage Perseus from rushing me. I put the Zuyong haris prone in the center, with the Hunzakut in front of them to lay a mine on Mary if she tried to come closer. McMurrough sat in a hidey-hole on my left. The support staff spread out to cover a bit more space and hide as best as possible.

My opponent's reserve was the Intervenor, which hid in the back with the Clockmaker. I reserve deployed the Shihab to guard my left flank and cover any remaining potential Raoul landing zones. With deployment finished I made my booty rolls and got +1 ARM and then ODD, twice, including the ABH I had left out to ARO!

Since my opponent brought a Limited Insertion list and I didn't see much need to limit his coordinated orders, turn 1 began! Raoul and Mary got a coordinated order to move closer to my table half. Next Perseus moved foward to challenge the ABH with a smoke grenade F2F, but the ABH scored two hits with his akrylat-kanone instead, immobilizing Perseus. Next to activate was the Hollowman fireteam. Through a series of super-jumps the missile launcher was able to take out the Shihab, the ODD Bounty Hunter, and my Dozer, who I had foolishly left too close to the ABH. In the process he suffered a crit wound from the Shihab. Lastly my opponent maneuvered his Hollowmen into defensive positions and moved the Clockmaker and Zondbot forward to try to un-glue Perseus, but failed. Control passed to Dahshat.

I had lost my 5-man bonus, but knew that the Rui Shi was still plenty capable of doing serious damage even in a 3-man fireteam. Valeryia started by buffing up the Rui Shi with marksmanship, and then the Rui Shi, Zuyong FO, and the +1 ARM ABH began moving forward. I left the ODD one behind to cover space since Raoul still hadn't appeared. First the Rui Shi took out the immobilized Perseus, took some long shots at Mary which missed, and then managed to find a flank on the Hollowman fireteam and catch a couple out of cover. In order, the Rui Shi was able to take out the Stempler (importantly disabling its repeater) and the ML Hollowman. With the longer-range pieces disabled, I swapped over to the Zuyong HMG in the haris, and he maneuvered to take out the Spitfire and MULTI Rifle from beyond their good rangebands. Lastly the Rui Shi swung wide and took out the Boarding Shotgun. This left the entire Hollowman link team unconscious but not dead, and with the Clockmaker still in action I needed to take that out as well. Another move from the Rui Shi prompted a firefight with the Clockmaker, which the Clockmaker managed to win with a crit! With my Dozer out of action my only option remaining was to sprint the Liberto past Mary Problems to take it out. Mary succeeded at her discover but fortunately missed a follow-up SMG shot, allowing me to use my very last order to take out the Clockmaker with my Liberto.

Tunguska's in a rough spot. He's down to Mary and the Intervenor on the table and Raoul still in a dropship. I've done a solid job of cutting off Raoul's potential landing zones, but my opponent finds a spot near the Zuyong haris and attempts the landing. Sadly he fails and scatters off the table, putting him back in his deployment zone. With little else to do my opponent tries to take out my Zuyong FO with Mary, scoring a wound but failing to drop the HI. The Intervenor uses her LT order to put the Liberto into Dogged. With the final order my opponent puts Mary into suppression.

Just a bit of cleanup for Dahshat - first the Hunzakut lays a mine next to Mary and then the Zuyong HMG challenges her to a gunfight. She opts to dodge but fails, and while she shrugs off the mine she dies to HMG rounds. The Intervenor and Raoul are stuck in a corner, so I spend several orders on McMurrough moving/jumping across the board. McMurrough throws smoke and advances through it into CC with the Intervenor, dispatching it with a MA3 attack. Finally McMurough moved B2B with Raoul and inflicted a wound.

Raoul spends his single order to swing at McMurrough but bounces off ARM. On the final Dahshat turn McMurrough and Raoul engage in an epic duel that consumes several orders but ultimately ends with McMurrough victorious.

Final Score: 10-0 in favor of Dahshat

For my classified I once again chose Test Run. Given this was one of the ojective room missions I felt I had to go with List A. I won the lieutenant roll-off and elected to choose deployment, hoping to force my opponent to either take second turn or give me the last go at the objective room. Given my opponent's list composition this was probably the incorrect decision, but I didn't have much way of knowing that at the time.

My opponent deployed a Magister on each flank, his fireteam of Hospitaler HMG & Doctor, Santiago Spitfire & KHD, and Order Sergeant in the center, the Teuton center with the Xenotech, and the Fugazi watching my left side. I deployed my stuff somewhat reserved, with the Zuyong haris on the left, the Rui Shi fireteam on the right, with the Traktor Muls, Dozer, and Ghulam in the center with Xenotech. I had an ABH watching the Hospitaler HMG, one watching the right Magister, and the Liberto watching the left Magister.

My opponent reserve deployed a Montesa paramedic on the left. I went ahead and deployed the TR HMG watching the Hospitaler HMG. My ABH watching the Hospitaler rolled +3 ARM, the one watching the Magister rolled HMG(!!), and the last one rolled AutoMedikit. Since my opponent was a single combat group I didn't spend any command tokens and we started the game.

The Military Order turn began with the right Magister impetuously moving forward and attempting to dodge the ABH's two HMG shots, but failing and falling unconscious. The Montesa went next, moving 8" from left to right. I had a chance to ARO with my Liberto but declined. Instead upon the other Magister activating, I fired the Liberto's D.E.P., knocking the other Magister unconscious. Finished with impetuous, my opponent set out clearing the way for his Montesa. The Hospitaler HMG took down the TR HMG and forced the ABH back behind cover. Next the Montesa motored up the board, along the way taking out the Hunzakut, ABH with HMG, ABH with AutoMedikit, the Zuyong FO, the Rui Shi, and finally, my Ghulam LT. The Teuton with Xenotech moved forward with NCO.

Ouch. While I may have taken out the Magisters, my opponent had inflicted major damage with the Montesa. In Loss of Lieutenant, the best I could really do was spend my entire turn and all my command tokens moving McMurrough over to engage the Montesa in CC, inflicting a single wound. Desperate to gain a bit more ground, I had the Zuyong HMG engage the Teuton HMG with his tactical awareness order, but did not manage to inflict any damage. The Liberto used his irregular order to jump down and prepare to breach the objective room. Before passing turn back I nominated the Dozer as my new LT, as I was very short on specialists.

My opponent opted to spend his Montesa's impetuous order to fight McMurrough in CC, which fortunately ended with McMurrough emerging victorious and separating from the combat. He continued by activating his Magister HMG and taking out the Zuyong HMG, and attempted to take out McMurrough who successfully defended himself with smoke. With not much access to the rest of my army the MO commander opted to get his fireteam settled in the center of the table. He advanced and got into position in the central room, connecting his right-most console but failing several attempts to connect the central console along the way. His Teuton once again used the LT order to advance with the Xenotech and successfully planted the multi-scanner.

My turn began without LoL, but without very much firepower to speak of. McMurrough was in the gunsights of multiple knights so I declined to use his impetuous order. Instead I started by having my Liberto advance and shoot into the room attempting to take out the Santiago spitfire. I managed to inflict a wound but this allowed the Santiago to fall back behind cover, making further attempts much more difficult. Instead I had my Dozer LT activate his Nasmat to repair the Rui Shi, who went on to take out the Santiago. The Rui Shi continued by taking out the Teuton and inflicting a wound on the Santiago KHD, but sadly I was out of orders after that.

Fortunately for me, the Santiago Spitfire was my opponent's lieutenant, so he began his turn in LoL and did not have very many options. He began with the Hospitaler doctor, who moved out past the Liberto to attempt to get B2B with the Santiago spitfire. This brought him within the Rui Shi's repeater range, so Valerya attempted "Gotcha!" and the Liberto shot his SMG. The Hospitaler opted to shoot the Liberto and managed to take it out. Valerya succeeded at her hack attempt but the program couldn't breach the Hospitaler's BTS. Next the KHD Santiago moved forward into the Rui Shi's repeater range as well and took out Valerya with a Redrum. This allowed the Hospitaler to successfully revive the Santiago. With that my opponent shuffled his models to body-block all 4 doors to the Engineering Deck. He re-formed his fireteam back to 5 models and passed control back to myself.

Still quite low on resources, I was forced to take some risks. First McMurrough used his impetuous order to advance toward the Knight fireteam, but took 2 wounds from the Santiago spitfire. The Rui Shi attempted to make up for McMurrough's failure but also took a wound. With no other models in her combat group the tinbot Zuyong spent both her available orders to engage the Santiago doctor, but only managed to inflict 1 wound. With no consoles and no real chance to get into the objective room, my only remaining option was to use my Dozer to attempt to take down the Hospitaler doctor and sync my closest console. Unfortunately this plan was cut short as the Dozer failed his firefight with the Hospitaler and was taken down. With no orders left, the game was over.

Final Score: 8-0 in favor of Military Orders

I managed to pull In Extremis Recovery as my classified, which I figured would be an easy clear in The Armory. My opponent managed to win the Lieutenant roll and chose the first turn, which I was dreading given his ability to fill the armory with Jammers if he so chose. I chose the table half with easier access to the objective room.

My opponent deployed the Kamau Sniper + Fusiliers as a fireteam in the left half of his deployment zone, a haris of Patsy, Kamau HMG, and Kamau Hacker in the center, and the Fugazi and Mulebots in the back right corner. He deployed two camo markers (Helots) on a central building, one protecting the order bots on the right, and one camo marker (Zulu-Cobra) on the right as well. I wanted nothing to do with the Kamau + Fusilier Core, so I deployed my Zuyong haris in the center, the Rui Shi core on the right, and the support staff intermingled. McMurrough went directly in front of the Rui Shi. The only thing I left on the left flank was a Traktor Mul, buried deep behind a building.

His reserve was his second Zulu-Cobra, which he deployed as a camo marker on the mostly empty left flank. Mine was the TR HMG, which I put on the left flank, outside the enemy fireteam's LoF, to discourage a breakthrough from that direction. My Bounty Hunters rolled +2 ARM, panzerfaust, and flash pulse. Nothing crazy, but the panzerfaust might come in handy if I lose my other options to breach the armory doors.

Before the first turn began I opted to strip two orders from Patsy's combat group, as it seemed clear he intended to access the armory with that haris. He did indeed begin by running the haris up to the gate, and spent several orders blowing the door off with Patsy's D-charges. He advanced into the room and set up positions. With the primary group exhausted, he moved on to the secondary. He started by moving one Zulu-Cobra under camo up the table and encountered the Liberto, which he revealed via sensor. He attempted to engage the Liberto in a firefight, but ate a D.E.P. for his troubles and was removed from the table. The other Zulu-Cobra attempted to make up for his partner's mistakes by advancing up the left flank and managed to isolate the Shihab before returning to camo.

Back to Dahshat, my first order of business was McMurrough, who impetuoused forward and suffered a wound from a Helot LRL. Next I had Valerya buff the Rui Shi with assisted fire, then moved with the tinbot Zuyong as the leader to see the still-camo'd Zulu-Cobra. After a couple orders the ZC was taken down, and the haris returned to being bunkered up. Next the Rui Shi took down the Helot overwatching McMurrough, which freed the big dog to make a move toward the armory. After throwing some smoke in the room to block off line of fire, McMurrough cleaved the door apart with his CCW and took out the two Kamaus and Patsy in CC. Lastly he accomplished In Extremis Recovery by finishing off the unconscious Patsy.

As I had managed to take down the enemy's Lieutenant, his turn was rather uneventful. He shuffled around his Fugazi bots to get better LoF, then passed turn back, unwilling to break up his Kamau + Fusilier fireteam to try to get in the armory.

I still had no interest in fighting the fireteam on its own terms, so instead I had McMurrough loot a panopoly, earning a combi rifle, then smashed them both to secure that objective for myself. I moved the haris forward to try to thin out some of the Helots and make approaching the armory more difficult. The Zuyong HMG managed to kill one Helot but lost a wound to the a light rocket launcher of the other and decided to fall back.

Seeing his last opportunity to secure the armory, my opponent spent his turn moving his Kamau + Fusilier core into the room, managing to take out McMurrough along the way. He accomplished his own In Extremis Recovery by finishing off the unconscious McMurrough as revenge for Patsy. He also took out the wounded Zuyong HMG and its tinbot Zuyong friend, leaving Valerya as the sole remaining member of that fireteam.

In my turn I move the Ghulam lieutenant into group 1 to maximize my orders there. The turn could best be summarized as: Rui Shi kills everything. First the Fusilier combi, then the missile launcher, then another combi, then the Kamau, and finally the last Fusilier. With the objective room empty I moved my Zuyong FO into the room to secure it for the final points.

Final Score: 10-0 in favor of Dahshat

My 12 TP and 38 OP was enough for third place, 4 OP behind second place.

Well, the lists did what they were intended to do: bowl over the opponent with superior firepower. I was also able to make enough of a defensive web that only an expertly piloted HI Motorcycle was able to inflict serious damage, and despite that I still had a decent chance to at least tie that mission. The games I won went very well thanks to quality shooting, and the game I lost could easily have been a different result with some different tactics, primarily taking the first turn instead of ceding it to my opponent.

Overall I'm quite happy with how Dahshat Company performs on the tabletop. I think it has its shortcomings, and there are definitely things I miss from other factions, but it's very hard to argue with huge order pools fueling extremely effective attack pieces. While I had some worries about VIRD coming into this tournament, I was mostly able to ignore Kamau snipers and gut their order pools instead, or simply cut them off from their 5-man fireteam bonus and take them out afterward. I felt like I had the tools to succeed in each mission, and even make up for some bad luck along the way.

I'm looking forward to trying more Dahshat, though I'm having a bit of a list-building funk with them because it seems difficult to get away from Zuyong fireteams to explore other options. There's also the problem that Libertos are so absurdly optimized that they edge out other Irregular options like Bashi Bazouks and Kum Bikers. Not to mention the combination of Hunzakuts and Libertos significantly reduces the appeal of more pricy midfield options like the Zhencha, Hulang, and Saito. The Zhencha especially is a hard sell when a Hunzakut with two SMG Liberto friends is only two points more expensive.

Ultimately I had a great time and 5 great opponents, so I'd like to close by thanking them for the games and to everyone involved in planning and running this awesome event. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back next year!

Sad we didn't get to play this year, would have loved to square off against your Dahshat.

I find it funny to see that fighting MO was hard for you compared to VIRD.
Nicely played. Your Mag list clearly better than the one I faced on TTS. Did the fact to face a Cutter on a table with forest terrain make you think about the Brawler? Because this guy would have definitely changed our game.
But, I would have never thought one can cross the path of 4 different PanO players in the same tournament. How many of those guys was there in your tournament?

It was definitely a factor. Originally, List A contained both the Rui Shi and Brawler MSV2 sniper, so I figured if I were very worried about visual mods I could just opt for that list. But after the fireteam ruling made Rui Shi + Miranda + 3 ABH invalid, I swapped the Brawler and Miranda for the Zuyong FO and Shihab remote.

After that I decided to include the Brawler sniper as a complement to the Maghariba, as I think they go very well together. The Rui Shi does best with a hacker and I was loathe to include one with so many friendly repeaters on the table. I figured the Brawler + ABH core did a decent job replacing the Ghulam core, though I did have to downgrade a Zhencha to a Hunzakut FO to make everything fit.

I think it was just my luck! Sadly I don't know how many PanO players were in attendance that day, but it certainly felt like 4/5ths of them :P
