I don't know if this is thread necromancy but I'm in the middle of finishing up my 5 converted Orcs (minus a working paint scheme) and I'm trying to figure out what loadouts they should have. Is the Combi-Rifle subpar compared to the Multi-Rifle? What would be a good set of a full core of Orc with no Pasty or other units in the link?

2xBS, if you are going to fork out for the core, the big draw is those sweet sweet B2 BS23 attacks to hide behind in reactive. they are also the cheapest profile so thats a bonus. Probably Id rate a Multi rifle, Patsy/AHD on top of that and then an active gun of choice (fuerbach or HMG) depending on mission and list

@daboarder That is something I wouldn't have thought of. I'm guessing the Combi-Rifle is bad to take compared to the other options due to linked hackers not performing well?

Combi Rifle on HI is just plain bad. It doesn't have the stopping power of Boarding shotgun or the versatility of Multi Rifle (which itself is kinda meh, but better than Combi).

That is what I was thinking before writing/typing my above question. Plus Hackers in links haven't gotten raving reviews. They seem to just be a liability instead of a boon. Well at least I don't need to use a Combi for conversion purposes. Though where would I get 1 or 2 Boarding Shotguns for the Orcs?

If we just accept for now that CB are never going to release another weapon sprue set, for the reasons they gave, we could ask for the stl files for the weapons to be released so those with 3D printers could make conversion pieces.

Assault Hackers in big Medium and Heavy Infantry links are kind of a relic of the past. They were born in an age before either KHDs or Mixed Links, and they've still stuck around. The ORC AHD is, regrettably, a pretty sad example of this. WIP12, BTS3 is rough.

If you're looking for heavy-infantry scale boarding shotguns, the Hospitaller box has one.

I actually don't think the multirifle is worth the 4 points more it cost in comparison to a combi. Unless i'm shooting a TAG AP ammo is pretty useless. HI is expensive enough as it is.

I guess that is a good point but @SmaggTheSmug also makes sense with a HI using a Multi or Shotgun over a Combi. @barakiel 's post about Assault Hackers on HI sounds grounded. There doesn't seem to be a need for a Combi Orc outside of saving points for another unit/loadout. Plus @daboarder 's take on Shotguns make them sound more attractive and you save one more point than going with a Combi instead.

Multirifles in 3+ link have the ability to Burst 2 DA in active(hardly used) or reactive(pretty freaking sweet).

Doesn't make me win the face-to-face any more. And that is what i care about in reactive. I only field combi rifles if possible and never in any game did i think "too bad this isn't a multi."

    (Boarding shotgun is dope tho)

Edit: Seriously in what situation does that DA ammo in reactive actually increase my chances significantly? I can't thing of one.

,multi rifles are great, particularly linked. B4 shock is worth it on its own, but even the AP has a place, cutting through tougher targets.

Fantastic on Combat Specialists and great as a mid range ARO/utillity option for a link able to cover the 0-16 range band the links other weapons wont cover.

Im also experimenting a little with the AHD lately. I agree its pretty rough, and if you can get patsy shes a better option.
But a SS2 AHD has its place and offers some interesting oportunities. probably does rely on the opponent wanting a specific set of tools such as a TAG or HI however.
If you do take it you'll need a KHD and probably EVO in the rest of the list for support.

If the hit calculation is the same DA ammo is better than AP for causing wounds. If something is high armor, or shock immune, or more than 1 wound, then DA is better than AP.

Sure an impact template from BS is nice, but it's also only great for shooting within that 8" range band. It starts to loose it's charm pretty quick after that.

Lastly Multirifles have STUN ammo, so if you are NOT likely to kill something with your ARO, then you can opt to stun it to keep it from rampaging.

All of these things make multirifles worth considering over a combirifle or a BS and their cost reflects that.

Shock can certainly be great against some armies. I agree on that point.

And if i would really bring a 5 man link i would certainly add a single multi-rifle.

Shock is also a good way to get a warband to stop tweaking out and continuing their charge.

Multi Rifle is a weapon that, while not bad, is not particularly good either. People tend to take it as an upgrade to Combi, but usually when the profile has something else going for it as well (like the toolkit on Black Friar or Doctor on Hospitaller). That said the AP can come in handy as a backup anti-TAG tool.
Only time I'd see myself taking ORC Multi would be the Duo or if I had spare points to give it to BSG Tinbot (if I had a second BSG in there).

I agree with Smagg, I'm more than happy to reach for a Hsien MR, or an Asura MR (though that one's also a hacker) as primary midfield hunters, where I'll hesitate over the Aquila MR for being under-gunned; a nanopulser changes my gut reaction to the loadout, which tells me I "feel" the MR is either under-powered or overcosted, but not by much.

I think the Aquila's issue is that it does ONE thing. It's not even an elite or veteran troop to do more classifieds! Until recently it's also been a little awkward to fit into a list, since it was/is a solo unit. I think that's why people tend to leave it out of lists in favor of more orders and MSV2 or hexa/swiss guards who are often just as or more effective for a similar price tag.

Dont forget the Charontid. All of those have access to smoke as well where as the lone Aquilla does not.

I like the MULTI Rifle, but it occupies a difficult spot. If I'm selecting profiles, I certainly like my fire superiority (HMGs, Spitfires, Red Furies) or my bargain/utility (boarding shotgun, SMG, direct template.)

My favorite place to see it is probably in Haris. Haris teams have enough Mobility and versatility of roles (rangebands, Classified coverage) that you can feel comfortable dumping a lot of Orders into the team, and you bring that nice +1 Burst MULTI Rifle utility along for the ride as necessary.
