With RTF officially out I'm sure everyone is theory crafting lists. I'm going to guess everyone first list will be Ghulam Core with Tarik in the front. Take the biggest gun and give it the biggest boost. But when trying to complete the list I found that I am always building a limited insertion list which in my local Meta tends to have problems. When comparing Tarik to a Khawarji, they both get the same BS/B/Fat2. But Tarik is in theory tougher and now with LT L2. The problem is that you NEED to take a CoC which added another 30 points to his costs. Is Tarik worth it, when the Khawarji can fill the same role in the fireteam? He's effectively 50 points more, with a faster speed which is not truly usable in a fireteam, extra W, and +2 ARM, and 1 extra order (from CoC model). I think this is why they gave him Lt L2 and a fireteam friendly NCO troop. By dropping Tarik and his CoC and replacing him with a Khawarji, you don't really lose much in the fireteam, and you can easily fit in a lot of extra orders making the list in general better. Is Tarik too expensive?
If you're fireteaming Tarik don't make him your LT. Tarik with a Ghulam or Naffatun LT is all the lethality and gets order efficiency through his fireteam anyways.
Well, if Tarik carries his pocket Ghulam Doctor around, why would we need a CoC? I mean, we can always pick him up, right? Also that NCO + Lieutenant L2 combo is way too tasty looking.
I think Tarik is just fine, his real strength is that he is a boss in a fireteam or without one. By having a 5 man “ghulam” core and Tarik in a list, it gives you the choice of running him solo or giving him the Fireteam bonuses depending on the situational needs.
Kind of skirting the question, but using a Namurr instead of Tarik is an option too, albeit a compromise. You'd trade some the higher attributes of Tarik for being a Specialist, Total Immunity, Climbing Plus, a smaller silhouette, and about the cost of one Ghulam difference.
On another note, I don’t see CoC as Mandatory, unless you really want to be blatant with the two LT orders. Realistically, I don’t know if you ever want Lt L2 in the Link, that seems to be a waste of his two extra orders.
I'm beginning to think the same thing. The LT L2 profile has more potential as a solo piece. Tarik is a very mobile model and can act as a distraction from the fireteam. The NCO let you use the order on the fire team, and given you can get Smoke in the same fire team as MSV2 its go potential.
I don't think that's skirting the question at all. RTF has a few options, including the Namurr, for mobile, aggressive gunfighters. Mukhtar and Khawarij haris come to mind as well. That means Tarik isn't the only option for his role, as he has traditionally been in vanilla.
As others have said, I'm leaning towards a Tarik Lt 2 solo piece. Fatality 2 is already great, without link bonuses. And pairing him with a Haris and Core gives three really strong gunfighters.
You can always Haris Tarik up with some Mukhtars, go strong and fast up to midfield, kill some, and then rampage with Tarik solo using his LT orders ;) And go back to the worm and safe Haris ;) There are really many options now. Tarik LT2 is one of them - I'm curious if I will be able to try them all, with the new armies wanting to be played and new troops in Vanilla and sectorials... ;) PozdRawiam / Greetings
As @Cannon Fodder said above, Tarik LT L2 + NCO ghulam in a fireteam seems much valid. It seems a match made in heaven to me. Tarik can advance towards midfield of the board while benefiting from his core team. Then, from there, he can go out and do anything on his own. Also with only spending 1 Command token you have your 4-man core in the field, stealing opponent's orders by taking his time. The questions remaining are - 1)Taking CoC Hortlak for Tarik, or not? 2) Is it worth whole points spent(Tarik + CoC Hortlak = already 88pts). You can spend 33pts less by not taking 1 more LT order option.
I tried to make a non LI list while abusing the mixte FT and Fat lvl2. It's just a no brain daft but here is what i got : 1 FT core, 1 FT haris, an extra doctor with a bot and an all-around HI. Some ARO and smoke in G2. Ramah Taskforce ────────────────────────────────────────────────── GROUP 1 10 KHAWARIJ (Fatality L2) Spitfire / Pistol, AP CCW. (1.5 | 32) KHAWARIJ (Fatality L1, Multispectral Visor L2) Mk12 / Pistol, AP CCW. (0.5 | 36) GHULAM Doctor Plus (MediKit) Rifle + Light Shotgun / Pistol, Knife. If you have an NCO in the link, I wouldn't stick the LT2 in there. Though that's speaking as an IA player who has a camo LT2.
I was thinking more of Limited Insertion. With this setup you can form the link several ways and even duo with Maggie or just let Tarik rambo. Kameel can reload the panzerfaust or Maggie as needed. Nasmat goes with Monstrucker: Limited Insertion ────────────────────────────────────────────────── GROUP 1 9 1 TARIK MANSURI Lieutenant L2 Spitfire, Nanopulser, Grenades / Pistol, DA CCW. (1.5 | 59) MAGHARIBA (Fireteam: Duo, 360º Visor) MULTI HMG, Heavy Flamethrower, Mine Dispenser / AP Heavy Pistol. (2 | 99) MAGHARIBA PILOT Light Shotgun / Pistol, Knife. () RAFIQ REMOTE FTO (Fireteam: Duo) Red Fury, Sniffer / Electric Pulse. (0.5 | 22) KHAWARIJ (Chain of Command, Fatality L1) Rifle + Light Shotgun, Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. I personally am finding far more success with Tarik L2 in a Khawarij haris. Let the NCO Haris leader use the LT orders to move them up the field, then let Tarik Spearhead. This works with the normal Spitfire as well, but is prone to one unlucky exchange.
I think Tarik Lt L2, Khawarij Chain of Command and Ghulam NCO are all functional in the same list. It comes down to flexibility. You don't want every game to be "I'm going to put Tarik in this Core team, and that's my plan." You also don't want every game to be "Tarik is separate from my Core link." It makes sense to look for the gaps during deployment, and figure out if Tarik is better going solo or going as part of a Core. If he can be part of a Core without having to drag them all into harm's way, then that's great; you have an NCO who can lay Smoke and help the Core maneuver and use his Lt L2 effectively. In most situations with that setup though, Tarik probably burns bright early-game, goes down eventually, and then you have a great Core linked combatant (Khawarij) and the Ghulam NCO to give you a strong Turn 3... Lay smoke and advance on an objective, lob frag grenades to get someone off it, or have a 5-man linked Khawarij be your second wave of super soldier. Ultimately, with those three purchases in one list, I think you're buying yourself tactical flexibility from one game to the next. I've been doing something similar, to a lesser extent, with Varuna. If your plan every game is "all my Kamau go in this Core link", then you tether yourself to limited options, and paint a big target on the squishy link sitting in your DZ. But if you're willing to run good gunfighters solo, it's harder for your opponent to anticipate and contain, even if it means reduced stats. Sometimes the surprise factor and mobility of a solo unit hugely outweigh the statistical dominance of link bonuses.
