What the title says... if you form a fireteam from troopers after orders are generated for the turn, are you still obligated to spend the impetuous orders on the troopers in question? Does this break the fireteam? No really, what happens?

You have found a scenario that falls slightly outside the stated rules.

Off the cuff ruling, but I would say that the impetuous orders are already generated, so you are obligated to spend them. Any model activated by such an order will leave the fireteam, and if it's the team leader, the team will break. Barring special rules, you can't activate a fireteam model with a non-regular order, so there's no way you're getting your bonuses.

The troopers stop being Impetuous while a member of a Fireteam.

"Troopers with the Frenzy Fury Characteristic who are in the Impetuous state, or with the Impetuous or Extreme Impetuous Fury Characteristics, are Non Impetuous while part of a Fireteam. "

You are only obliged to spend Impetuous orders when the Trooper is Extremely Impetuous.

"Troopers with this Characteristic must expend their Impetuous Order during the Impetuous Phase, and follow the rules specific to these kinds of orders."

However, because members of a Fireteam are non-Impetuous you are not obliged to spend the order on them. Sequence of events:
    1. Impetuous Orders are generated by an Extremely Impetuous trooper.
    2. Fireteam is formed and the trooper becomes non-Impetuous
    3. All Impetuous orders belong to troopers that are not Extremely Impetuous and can be freely discarded.

So you certainly aren't forced to spend the order, but can you?

A: yes. But it does nothing.

The only rules about spending orders on a Fireteam (leaving aside TA and NCO because they're irrelevant) state:

"During the Active Turn, all troopers who are part of a Fireteam activate with a single Regular Order from the Order Pool of their Combat Group."

"If the trooper is Irregular and uses its Irregular Order.

If the trooper is the Lieutenant and spends the Lieutenant Special Order."

The rules for Impetuous Orders state that only the Trooper may use them.

So, there literally is no rule to say that spending an Impetuous order on a member of a Fireteam has any effect. Ergo it has no effect.

My opinion: when the option exists for following the rules (declining to expend Impetuous orders that belong to non-Extremely Impetuous troopers) just do that. It's not necessary to go "but what about this alternative for which there is no rules": if there are no rules for it you can't do it.

If I recall about how it's been ruled before was:
    • Start of turn:
    • Can link/delink as desired
    • All models that are currently in link team do not generate impetuous orders, otherwise they will as normal
    • Can link/delink as desired
    • Each model not in a link at the point of spending it, spends their impetuous order one at a time.
    • After each impetuous order, can link/delink as desired.
So with a hypothetical 2 5 man core with kuang shi. Start of turn one of them is in a link, so no impetuous orders for that 5, but generate impetuous from the other group. Then spend a command token and link the other 5, effectively wasting the impetuous order as there is no one to spend it on and then the regular turn begins.

I know people make “PanO was a mistake” jokes, but I think AVA 8 Kuang Shi in Imperial Service was a mistake.

Indeed, but as anyone playing MO can attest to, having your main cheerleader have a baseline at 13 points makes list building a bit tight.

I wish ISS had gendarm as the main foot soldier instead. Oh well.

Lol, just used kuang shi as a good core of impetuous models for example, any other core impetuous would have been fine xP

Uhh, you know I play Combined Army, right? I know all about 14 point basic troops.

Hehe, sorry for going off on a tangent. Nothing against you personally, of course!

There are very few who play Combined in Sweden so I seldom get to face them so they aren't exactly high up on my awareness list. But the point isn't which army you play, but that the ISS gets difficult to fuel and vary without Kuang Shi - and as I've been vocal about, I very much prefer lists not fuelled by Kuang Shi so believe me I've tried a lot.
